Congo health ministry reports 131 deaths and 513 suspected Ebola cases in eastern Congo

Eastern Congo's rare Bundibugyo Ebola variant has killed at least 131 people with 513 suspected cases, the health ministry confirmed, as the WHO declared it a public health emergency of international concern.

1h ago Khaosod

KINSHASA, Congo (AP) — At least 131 deaths and over 500 suspected cases have been reported in the ongoing Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo, the Congolese health ministry said Tuesday as details emerged about the government's delayed response.

Samuel Roger Kamba, the minister of public health, said: "513 suspected cases and 131 deaths have been recorded in the affected areas."

"These are suspected deaths, and investigations are underway to determine which ones are actually linked to the disease."

The WHO on Sunday declared the Ebola outbreak a public health emergency of international concern.

Health authorities say the current outbreak, first confirmed on Friday, is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, a rare variant of the Ebola disease that has no approved therapeutics or vaccines. Although more than 20 Ebola outbreaks have taken place in Congo and Uganda, this is only the third time that the Bundibugyo virus has been detected.

Cases have now been confirmed in Bunia, North Kivu's rebel-held capital of Goma, Mongbwalu, Butembo, and Nyakunde.

The World Health Organization's director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said in Geneva on Tuesday that he is "deeply concerned about the scale and speed of the epidemic" and the U.N. health agency will convene its emergency committee Tuesday to advise on recommendations.

Young Thai barber transforms old bus into trendy barbershop

A 22-year-old barber in central Thailand converted a retired bus into an air-conditioned barbershop offering haircuts from just 40 baht, now serving over 20 customers daily in Uthai Thani province.

1h ago Khaosod

UTHAI THANI — A 22-year-old barber has captured attention by converting a retired passenger bus into a fully-equipped, air-conditioned barbershop offering budget-friendly haircuts and free Wi-Fi in central Thailand. Known as Luk Chang Barber and located in Nong Khayang district of Uthai Thani province, the creative salon has become a local favorite for its unique concept and affordable prices.

Owner Theerapong Karinta, nicknamed Thanwa, initially worked in construction with his father, who proposed a deal: if Thanwa seriously trained in barbering, his father would invest in an old bus to convert into a shop. After nearly a year of barber training in Nakhon Sawan province, Thanwa returned home to help his family renovate the bus into a functional salon complete with barber chairs, mirrors, air conditioning and Wi-Fi.

Prices are exceptionally affordable—student haircuts start at 40 baht, adult cuts cost 60 baht, and trendy or new styles are 80 baht. The shop now serves more than 20 customers daily, with some days fully booked. Thanwa appreciates working close to home while pursuing a stable profession, noting that "people will always need haircuts when their hair grows." The engineless bus can still be towed to provide mobile barber services at other locations.

Rescuers search for 3 missing after German building collapse possibly caused by gas explosion

Rescue teams in eastern Germany searched for three missing people after a residential building collapsed in Görlitz on Monday night, with authorities suspecting a gas explosion as the cause.

1h ago Khaosod

GÖRLITZ, Germany (AP) — Rescue teams in eastern Germany searched Tuesday morning for three people who were missing after a building collapsed in the eastern city of Görlitz near the Polish border.

Police said a gas explosion may have been the cause for the collapse of the building, which took place Monday night.

Emergency responders proceeded with great caution at the scene in case of gas leaks, German news agency dpa reported.

After unsuccessful attempts to locate the missing under the rubble with the help of search dogs, rescuers began clearing debris with an excavator and by hand around 2 a.m. Tuesday.

Emergency services from the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) use their bare hands to remove the mountain of rubble from the collapsed residential building in the city center of Goerlitz, Germany, Tuesday, May 19, 2026. (Paul Glaser/dpa via AP)

Initial concerns that up to five people may have been buried under rubble turned out to be wrong, police said.

A man who feared his wife and cousin might be trapped under the rubble said Monday they had arrived that day for a vacation in the rented house. While shopping at nearby supermarket, he heard an explosion and returned to the house to find nothing but a large pile of rubble, dpa reported.

The collapsed building in the historic Wilhelminian style contained rental and vacation apartments, police said.

Görlitz is Germany's easternmost city with a population of 57,000. The historic, undamaged old town district is a popular location for international film productions.

Thai Teen 'Mind Sakol' Wins 2026 World Women's Snooker Title

Thai teenager Mind Sakol, 18, won her first World Women's Snooker Championship title in Dongguan, China, defeating England's 12-time champion Reanne Evans 6-2 to become Thailand's third world snooker champion.

1h ago Khaosod

DONGGUAN, China — 19 May 2026, Thai teenager 'Mind Sakol' Panchaya Channoi made snooker history on Tuesday by defeating 12-time world champion Reanne Evans to capture her maiden World Women's Snooker Championship title and become Thailand's 3rd World Snooker Champion.

The 2026 World Women's Snooker Championship, held at the Changping Snooker Center in Dongguan, Guangdong Province, China, reached its climax on Tuesday with the highly anticipated final match. The 18-year-old Thai sensation 'Mind Sakol' Panchaya Channoi, ranked 15th in the world, defeated her fellow Thai world number 3 and 2022 world champion 'Mink Saraburi' Nutcharut Wongharuthai 5-3. She then overcame England's Reanne Evans, the world number 4 and legendary 12-time world champion, 6-2 in the best-of-11 frame final.

In the final played under a best-of-11 frames format, the current two-time consecutive Under-21 World Champion, Mind Sakol, started aggressively, opening with a 3-0 lead against Evans. Although Evans fought back to trail 4-2, Mind closed out the match with a 6-2 victory.

This triumph propelled Mind Sakol to the world title along with a 550,000 Baht cash prize. She also achieved a historic double by successfully defending her World Under-21 title and capturing the main senior tournament title within a single year.

With this win, Mind Sakol becomes the third Thai player to claim the women's world crown, following Mink Saraburi and 'Baipat Sriracha' Siripaporn Nuanthakhamjan.

Moreover, Mind matches a record set by China's Bai Yulu in 2024 by becoming only the second woman in snooker history to win both the junior and senior world titles in the same calendar year, 2026.

The championship victory earns Panchaya a top prize of £13,000 (approximately 559,000 Baht) and a coveted spot in the elite 2026 Champion of Champions tournament. More significantly, the title grants her a two-season tour card to compete on the prestigious professional World Snooker Tour alongside male professionals starting in the 2026/27 season.

Meanwhile, Thailand's world number 3 'Mink Saraburi' Nutcharut Wongharuthai faces a tougher road back to the professional circuit. Having competed on the main tour since 2022, her contract extension is now uncertain. She must either compete in the Q School qualifying tournament in England or secure a remaining World Snooker Tour wildcard invitation. If neither option materializes, she will have to climb back to world number 1 via the women's ranking circuit to regain her professional status.

Volunteer Riders: Small Acts of Kindness on the Road, Enormous Impact for Those in Need

Volunteer rider group GrabRanger sacrifices earning time to assist stranded motorists across Bangkok and surrounding areas, inspired by founder P'Cherd's own experience of being ignored during roadside distress. The network uses social medi

1h ago Khaosod

Every minute on the road holds value, especially for riders since it represents an opportunity to earn income. Yet some riders choose to sacrifice their earning time to help people in distress without expecting gratitude or compensation.

These riders call themselves GrabRanger, a volunteer rider group dedicated to supporting each other within the driver community and assisting other road users they encounter. Despite different life circumstances, they share one common quality: public-mindedness and readiness to help. This fulfills their days and spreads positive energy in society as "heroes of the road."

GrabRanger's origins trace back to the direct experience of Cherdchai Panuavongse, or "P'Cherd," a 58-year-old rider and co-founder who once faced a problem alone on the road.

"My fuel ran out in the middle of the road, and I had to push my motorcycle alone on a long stretch. Hundreds of cars passed by, just driving past without helping. I felt so discouraged. But then one person stopped and helped me push the motorcycle to a nearby gas station. I felt deeply moved in that moment. It completely changed my perspective and made me determined that if I had the chance, I would never let anyone face the same problem again. From that day on, whenever I encounter someone struggling on the road, I help immediately without hesitation."

From that day forward, P'Cherd dedicated himself to serving society by balancing his courier work with volunteer riding. He eventually met other riders with similar values, and their small-scale efforts gradually expanded into a stronger collective. Last year (2568), they officially formed the GrabRanger group.

Today, GrabRanger has become a network with members spread throughout Bangkok and surrounding areas. They use social media as a communication channel to receive incident reports and coordinate responses, enabling the nearest riders to provide quick assistance. The platform also serves as a space to share content and inspire others to embrace volunteerism and help society.

For GrabRanger, assistance isn't limited to riders alone but extends to anyone on the road they encounter and can help, since emergencies can happen to anyone. Anukul Kachayut, or "P'Somdouy," an energetic 30-year-old new-generation rider and key team member, describes his role:

"I'm one of the admin team members handling coordination, from receiving incident reports to notifying nearby responders. I've personally gone to many scenes to help. We assist everyone we encounter, not just riders. The issues we frequently deal with include empty fuel tanks, tire leaks, flat tires, dead batteries, and collision accidents—we handle all of them.

We've completed many cases comprehensively. Once, a rider got hit by a car and was alone with no friends or family. What started as helping at the accident scene ended with us taking him to the hospital and volunteering to file a report at the police station, then delivering his documents to the hospital. This way, the injured person didn't have to worry about multiple things at once.

Sometimes we share fuel with people who run out in the middle of the road, or help someone whose vehicle breaks down during heavy rain late at night. Some cars can't go anywhere and are stuck in the rain with small children. We help them get home safely.

It might seem like small things, but it's incredibly important to people facing those problems at that moment. I often receive messages of gratitude."

Fresh and Jumping! Australian Bloke Shocked to Find Live Frog Hiding in Salad Bag

A Western Australian farmer discovered a live frog hidden in a bag of supermarket salad, which he and his housemates named Greg before releasing it to a nearby pond while playing the "Crazy Frog" song.

1h ago Khaosod

A bizarre incident that went viral in Australia occurred when Rye Smoker, a young farmer from Esperance in Western Australia, found a live frog hidden inside a bag of salad he purchased from a major supermarket while preparing dinner at home.

Smoker was preparing steak and salad for two housemates when he noticed something moving inside the sealed plastic bag of fresh vegetables. At first he thought he was seeing things, but upon closer inspection discovered a small frog hiding among the fresh leaves.

When he told his housemates, they didn't believe him, as it seemed nearly impossible for a frog to be in a supermarket salad bag. However, Smoker showed them the bag in person, and everyone was shocked and amused to discover the frog was indeed real.

After composing themselves, the group decided to name the frog "Greg" before releasing it safely into a nearby pond. But the story doesn't end there—they played the famous "Crazy Frog" song as they sent Greg back home.

Billy Lee Pine, Jones's boyfriend, explained they wanted to do something funny as a farewell to the frog, so they chose to play Crazy Frog, the famous dance track from the Swedish CGI animation character, creating a moment that was both hilarious and heartwarming.

The problematic salad bag was purchased from Woolworths supermarket on the same day the frog was discovered. The company released a statement saying this was an isolated incident with no additional similar reports, and confirmed they were urgently investigating with their supplier.

This isn't the first time animals have turned up in Australian supermarkets. Previously, customers have found large pythons on shelves in Sydney, and a venomous snake attached to fresh vegetables in a plastic bag in 2021, making Greg's story yet another bizarre tale circulating widely online.
