1d ago Khaosod

Chinese inmate Ming Chen Sun, 31, has passed the critical phase of his medical emergency but continues hospitalization under close guard. On May 11, Sun was transferred to emergency care after experiencing seizures and loss of consciousness while imprisoned at Pattaya Special Prison on firearms and explosives charges. He was initially treated at Pattaya Pathumkhun Hospital before being moved to the ICU on the evening of the same day.

Initial drug screening did not detect methamphetamine or cannabis in his system. Preliminary medical assessment suggests Sun may have overdosed on prescribed medication. Doctors administered gastric lavage through a nasogastric tube and antitoxin injections, after which he showed improvement and began responding to medical commands, though he remains on mechanical ventilation. He continues to receive liquid nutrition through the nasogastric tube as he cannot eat solid food yet.

Laboratory tests show negative results for all drug types in his urine. Blood samples have been sent for detailed analysis to screen for alcohol, benzodiazepines, and pesticides, with results expected within 5-15 days. As of May 18, Sun has been cleared from ICU and moved to a secure ward, showing signs of improvement and increased consciousness. Corrections officers, police from Bang Lamung station, and special operations units maintain continuous 24-hour security around the hospital. Family visits remain restricted pending his recovery. Authorities believe his seizure was caused by medication overdose rather than drug use, and note he has a history of depression treatment.

Pak Thong Chai Residents Appeal to Prime Minister for Justice: Market Fire 16 Years On, Still No Compensation or Progress

Residents in Nakhon Ratchasima submitted a second petition to the Prime Minister demanding compensation and justice 16 years after a devastating market fire destroyed their homes and businesses, with no relief provided despite promises made

1d ago Khaosod

On May 18, 2025, residents affected by a fire in Mueang Pak subdistrict, Pak Thong Chai district, Nakhon Ratchasima province, submitted their second petition to the Prime Minister through the government's complaint resolution center (1111). Led by Wannarath Veerchaiyasunthorn and Pornchanok Veerchaiyasunthorn, the group sought urgent help and demanded accountability after losing their homes and businesses in the major fire over 16 years ago, forcing them to rent accommodations for more than 15 years. Somphap Nilphan, an advisor on grievance management at the Prime Minister's Office, received the petition.

During the submission, residents gathered to bang pots and pans, demanding justice. The devastating fire had destroyed their homes and livelihoods over 16 years ago, yet compensation and legal proceedings remain stalled. In June 2023, a provincial problem-solving meeting resolved that state agencies should provide relief and compensation for the state-owned land affected by the fire. However, as of March 19, 2025, municipal officials who visited to inspect the situation confirmed that no compensation has been provided to date.

"We are suffering immensely. We have no home and no place to do business. We have had to rent from others for 15 full years. It has devastated our spirits and our families' lives," the residents stated in their petition.

The affected residents requested the Prime Minister to use his authority to expedite and follow up on officials' field investigations to restore justice and alleviate the prolonged hardship. Somphap Nilphan stated that the complaints center has accepted the case and will coordinate with relevant agencies including the Nakhon Ratchasima Provincial Governor, Pak Thong Chai District Office, Mueang Pak Municipality, State Property Office, Rights and Liberties Protection Department, and Public Rights Prosecutor to fairly monitor progress in assisting the affected residents.

Coach Wang Undecided on Using Overage Players for Thailand's 2026 Asian Games Football Campaign in Japan

Thailand's U-23 football coach is still deciding whether to use overage quota players for the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, with key warm-up matches against South Korea and the UAE scheduled for June ahead of the September competition.

1d ago Khaosod

Thawatchai Damrongtaksolkul, head coach of Thailand's U-23 national football team, is still undecided about using overage quota players for the 2026 Asian Games football tournament. The Thai U-23 squad has announced 26 players to prepare for two warm-up matches in June: facing South Korea on June 6 at 6 p.m. at True BG Stadium, followed by a closed-door match against the United Arab Emirates on June 9. Both matches serve as final preparations before competing in the 2026 Asian Games football championship in Japan from September 19 to October 4. Coach Wang revealed that while candidate lists for overage players already exist, a final decision on their inclusion remains pending. The timing is complicated by the Thai League 2026-27 season kicking off during the Asian Games period, along with FIFA international windows in September and October when the senior national team will compete in the AFF Suzuki Cup 2026 and FIFA Asian Cup qualifiers, requiring further deliberation. The upcoming training camp is expected to be the final preparation before the Asian Games, aimed at selecting the most ready players from the various sessions conducted over the past year of team-building. Players called up for the senior national team will have replacements brought in to provide additional selection options. The warm-up matches against South Korea and the UAE will provide valuable insights into the capabilities of all 26 players invited to camp.

Thai woman suffers broken leg after bang fai rocket crashes into her homeLegacyA woman in Nakhon Ratchasima is seeking compensation after a bang fai rocket crashed through her home and injured her daughter-in-law, resulting in a broken leg. The incident occurred on May 6 in Bua Lai district when a rocket reportedly fell through the roof of a shared family home. The 34 year old victim, Chanapa, suffered a broken left leg after being struck while sitting in her bedroom. Chanapa’s mother-in-law, 52 year old Somsuan, told the media that a child was also inside the room at the time but escaped injury. She said the incident could have been fatal if the rocket had hit the child. Officials from the Bua Lai Subdistrict Administrative Office later visited the property and offered repairs to the damaged roof. However, Somsuan said the event organiser had not contacted the family regarding compensation for Chanapa’s injury. She added that the family had paid all medical expenses themselves. Photo via Facebook/ Korat Watch According to Somsuan, the family requested 350,000 baht in compensation from the organiser, but the demand was rejected. She said the family decided to take the matter public after receiving a response from the organiser stating, “If you want the money, go sue for it.” The bang fai rocket accident drew criticism online and renewed concerns over safety standards at annual rocket festivals across the Isaan region. Several social media users noted that similar incidents occur almost every year without long-term preventive measures being introduced. Following public attention on the case, Bua Lai Subdistrict Administrative Office mayor Mongkhon Nontanam told Workpoint News that officials had continued assisting the family. Photo via Facebook/ Korat Watch Mongkhon said local officials repaired the damaged roof and provided a new bed and bedding after household items were damaged in the incident. He also stated that officials had already offered 20,000 baht in compensation and planned to cover Chanapa’s medical expenses based on hospital receipts. The incident was not the only reported rocket-related case during the festival period. In Kalasin, another woman used social media to seek accountability after a rocket reportedly landed at her home. No injuries or property damage were reported in that incident.

Energy Regulator Backs Government Plan to Renegotiate Power Purchase Contracts with Adder-FiT Producers to Reduce Electricity Costs Fairly

Thailand's energy regulator backs a government plan to renegotiate power contracts with renewable energy producers to lower electricity costs, which currently burden consumers with 13-17 satang excess per unit annually. The Energy Regulator

1d ago Khaosod

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) is supporting government efforts to review and modify power purchase agreements with Adder and FiT electricity producers to achieve genuine reductions in electricity costs and ensure fairness for all parties. ERC Secretary General Poolpat Leesombati revealed that the commission is ready to provide full data and legal support following Prime Minister's Order 137/2569, which established a committee to address problems arising from private power producer contracts. This will serve as a mechanism to genuinely reduce electricity costs and create fairness for all stakeholders.

Previously, the ERC proposed to the National Energy Policy Committee that purchase prices for Adder and FiT power plants should be revised. These are perpetual contracts where historical production costs and purchase prices no longer align with current conditions, where production costs have dropped significantly but purchase prices remain unchanged. This forces consumers to bear excess electricity costs of approximately 13-17 satang per unit, or conversely, allows operators to receive returns at high levels, totaling tens of millions of baht annually depending on yearly electricity production volumes.

The previous government under General Prayut Chan-o-cha received the ERC's proposal for consideration, though legal and contractual issues remain relevant. The ERC therefore recommends reviewing the matter under the Energy Industry Act B.E. 2550, specifically Section 65(1), which requires electricity rates to reflect actual costs, and Section 65(4), which requires rates to be fair to both energy users and operators. "The key consideration is whether contract conditions violate legal provisions. If it is determined that contract conditions are inconsistent with legal provisions, consideration must be given to whether legal principles take precedence over contract terms."

The committee comprises Deputy Prime Minister Pakaorn Nilpraband as chair and the Energy Minister as vice-chair, along with representatives from key agencies in energy, law, economics, and consumer protection, including the ERC Secretary General. The committee's primary responsibility is to establish guidelines for resolving issues with private power producer contracts that may not align with current circumstances and fairness principles, particularly regarding availability payments (AP) and energy payments (EP), to ensure compliance with legal standards, fairness to all contracting parties, and help manage the long-term electricity cost burden on the public. This committee represents an important mechanism for reviewing the country's energy cost management approach to make it appropriate to current conditions while protecting the public from excessive electricity costs.

Good News: Iranian Cultural Attaché Ready to Facilitate Thai Cargo Ships Through Hormuz Strait

Iran's cultural attaché has agreed to help expedite passage of two Thai cargo ships through the Hormuz Strait, following a May 18 meeting where Thailand reiterated its neutral stance in the regional conflict while seeking relief from global

1d ago Khaosod

On May 18, 2026 at Government House, Prime Minister's Advisor Wanmuhammadnor Mata received Mahdi Sareh, Deputy Cultural Attaché of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Thailand. Following the meeting, Wanmuhammadnor explained that the Iranian cultural office visited to thank Thailand and its leadership for attending ceremonies mourning the death of Iran's supreme leader, and to express appreciation for Thailand's continued friendship and support during Iran's current war challenges.

Wanmuhammadnor stated that he reassured the cultural attaché that Thailand maintains a clear policy supporting neutrality without aggression toward either side, and commits to honoring international treaties, agreements, and UN resolutions—positions consistent with statements made by Thailand's Foreign Minister in meetings with counterparts from other nations. Regarding the ongoing conflict between Iran and 2-3 other countries, he expressed hope for swift resolution, noting that the crisis extends beyond the warring parties to affect nations globally through energy price increases and economic problems.

Significantly, the Prime Minister requested through the cultural attaché that Iran facilitate passage of two Thai cargo ships currently unable to transit the Hormuz Strait. The attaché responded that typically countries not involved in the conflict are permitted passage, though numerous vessels are currently queuing. He committed to discussing expedited clearance with relevant parties. The Foreign Ministry has provided the shipping details to Iran's Foreign Ministry, and swift return of the vessels is anticipated.

When asked whether this meeting with the Iranian cultural attaché might create issues with the United States' perspective on Thailand, Wanmuhammadnor stressed that Thailand maintains a policy of preserving world peace, does not support warfare as beneficial to any party, and reaffirms its neutrality and UN obligations. He noted that Thai-Iranian relations span over 100 years from the Ayutthaya period, with the Bunnag family tracing ancestry to Iran.

Regarding Iran's latest situation, the advisor disclosed that negotiations are progressing significantly with hopes for a signing soon, though timing remains uncertain. He cited positive developments including the U.S. President's visit to China where both leaders discussed the Iran conflict, and the forthcoming visit by Iran's parliament speaker to China to engage with various parliaments. These developments suggest progress toward resolution. Thailand hopes to recover swiftly from the energy and economic crisis. When asked about expanded energy cooperation discussions, Wanmuhammadnor stated that Iran confirmed readiness to provide Thailand comprehensive cooperation.

Loei Governor Disbands Sam Ha Festival Committee, Appoints New Members Following Criticism Over 5.4 Million Baht Budget

Loei's governor dissolved the Sam Ha festival committee and appointed new members after public criticism over a 5.4 million baht budget, vowing to form a completely new team to determine appropriate spending for the June event.

1d ago Khaosod

The Loei governor has ordered the dissolution of the Sam Ha festival organizing committee and appointed a completely new committee following public questioning of the 5.4 million baht budget. Loei Province had planned to hold the Sam Ha festival tradition from June 12-14, 2025, with the goal of preserving and promoting local customs and traditions. The event was expected to attract at least 15,000 participants from 14 districts and feature local product sales and performances. The substantial budget drew scrutiny from residents, social media, the Ombudsman's Office, and the National Anti-Corruption Commission, with many questioning whether the spending was justified. Governor Chaiyaphat Jaruenpong chaired an emergency meeting at the Loei Provincial Hall with relevant officials to review the festival plans after news of the high budget allocation. Following the criticism, the Department of Culture cancelled the original terms of reference and event specifications. The governor stated that a completely new committee would be formed to determine the appropriate format and budget for the festival, with participation from all sectors including the public. Two key issues were discussed: establishing a new committee to define the event format with representation from all stakeholders, and setting a timeline for the festival, which must not exceed July 14. An additional oversight committee will be appointed to monitor budget expenditures. The budget comes from provincial development funds through the Department of Culture, which will implement the event. The newly appointed committee will begin meetings immediately to develop a new framework and ensure the festival proceeds appropriately within the July 14 deadline.

KBU SPORT POLL Reveals Thai Majority Supports Government's 1,500 Million Baht World Cup Broadcasting Rights Purchase as Worthwhile

A Kasem Bundit University survey found 51.72 percent of Thais support the government's 1.5 billion baht purchase of 2026 World Cup broadcasting rights, with 64 percent interested in following the tournament across various media channels.

1d ago Khaosod

KBU SPORT POLL released survey results on "Thai Society and the 2026 World Cup Trend," showing that a majority of 51.72 percent believe the government's expenditure of 1,500 million baht to purchase broadcasting rights for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is worthwhile and beneficial.

The United States, Canada, and Mexico will host the 2026 World Cup from June 11 to July 19, 2026. Thais are expected to follow the tournament closely, prompting this survey to capture public perspectives across various dimensions. Conducted by Kasem Bundit University's Human Capital Development Innovation Center in partnership with the Sports Management Institute for Sports Organizations (WISDOM) and B Bang Pakong page, the survey was administered online and via telephone between May 15-17, 2026. The sample comprised 1,103 general respondents aged 18 and over: 647 men (58.66%), 312 women (28.29%), and 144 LGBTQIA+ individuals (13.05%).

Key findings include:

Interest in Following the Tournament: 64.10% are interested, 20.00% are undecided, and 15.90% are not interested.

Preferred Viewing Channels: 39.70% prefer social media, 32.90% television, 13.80% radio, 11.05% newspapers, and 2.55% other sources.

Responsible Organizations: 35.81% believe public and private sector partnerships should purchase the rights, 33.09% favor private sector involvement, and 31.10% support government action alone.

Value for Money: 51.72% view the 1,500 million baht investment as worthwhile and beneficial, 36.55% believe it's not worthwhile, and 11.73% had no opinion.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rattapong Bunnyanuvathr, Director of Kasem Bundit University's Human Capital Development Innovation Center, noted that the survey reflects Thais' sustained interest in World Cup football through various media channels. He emphasized that since World Cup matches have traditionally been broadcast free on Thai television, partnering between public and private sectors to purchase broadcasting rights—despite the 1,500 million baht cost—represents good value for money. With Thais having only a four-year wait until the next World Cup, the 23rd FIFA World Cup will soon arrive, and whether Thais will receive live broadcasts as they have in the past remains a question the government is expected to answer soon.

Train Mechanic Gives Statement to Police; Investigators Probe Circumstances Before Bus Collision

A train mechanic gave a statement to police investigating a May 18 collision between a train and bus near Bangkok's Makkasan station, as authorities probe the driver's absence from the control room and his confirmed drug use before the cras

1d ago Khaosod

At 3 p.m. on May 18, 2025, a train mechanic or assistant driver from the train involved in a collision with a bus near Asok-Din Daeng Road, close to the Makkasan Airport Rail Link station, reported to investigators at Makkasan Police Station. Wearing a hat and mask, the mechanic entered the investigation room without answering questions, accompanied by what appeared to be a State Railway of Thailand official. Previous reports indicated the mechanic had already provided information to the State Railway of Thailand during their investigation.

Police are focusing their questioning on establishing facts from the day of the incident: the mechanic's location at the time, his specific job duties and activities prior to the crash, whether the train driver was genuinely absent from the control room and where he was, based on CCTV footage, and other relevant details.

The State Railway of Thailand confirmed the train driver tested positive for both amphetamine and cannabis, with further investigation of the mechanic planned. The black box results have been reviewed, with the driver admitting to regular drug use of multiple tablets at a time, his last use being ten days before the incident.

An additional troubling detail emerged when police reviewed CCTV footage and found no evidence of the driver sitting in the control room before the collision.

Nakhon Sawan Anti-Corruption Body Finds Former Subdistrict Chief Solicited 1 Million Baht Bribe for Water Supply Contract; Wife Also Implicated

A former Nakhon Sawan subdistrict chief has been charged with soliciting a 1 million baht bribe for three water supply contracts in 2015, with his wife implicated for receiving half the payoff into her bank account.

1d ago Khaosod

On May 18, 2026, Pichet Pimpana, director of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) office in Nakhon Sawan province, announced that the NACC committee had found sufficient grounds for criminal charges against the former chief of Ban Kaeng Subdistrict Administration Organization in Muang District for soliciting benefits related to three construction project bids. The investigation revealed that on November 9, 2015, the subdistrict organization announced contractor recruitment for three large-scale village water supply construction projects: one in Village 12 of Ban Samyaek Ban Kaeng, one in Village 8 of the same area, and one in Village 1 of Ban Mon, all within Ban Kaeng Subdistrict.

Pichet stated that only one partnership company submitted a bid, with no apparent justification for proceeding, yet the former chief failed to cancel the hiring—a violation of the Interior Ministry's 2535 Regulations on Local Administration Supplies and the Department of Local Administration's electronic auction purchasing guidelines. On December 11, 2015, the former chief invited the bidder to sign a contract and demanded 1 million baht in exchange for contract signature. After negotiation, the amount was reduced to 600,000 baht. The complainant provided 300,000 baht in cash to the former chief and transferred another 300,000 baht to the account of the former chief's spouse. The former chief then declared the partnership company as the winning bidder.

Based on these actions, the NACC committee found the former chief guilty under criminal charges of soliciting or accepting property or benefits improperly while in office, and of improperly or dishonestly performing or neglecting official duties causing harm, under Penal Code Articles 149 and 157. The spouse was similarly charged with aiding and abetting these offenses.
