21-Year-Old French Player Arthur Gea Rushes to Bathroom During French Open Debut Match
French 21-year-old Arthur Gea made his Grand Slam debut at Roland Garros but struggled with stomach issues, taking an emergency bathroom break during his first-set loss to 13th-seeded Karen Khachanov.
French home-grown tennis player Arthur Gea faced a difficult situation at the French Open after he had to rush off court for an emergency bathroom break early in the first set of his debut match last Sunday. The incident occurred while Gea was trailing 13th-seeded Karen Khachanov 4-2, when he suddenly asked the umpire for permission and hurried off the Suzanne Lenglen court. "I need to go to the bathroom. I can't move anymore. I have to go," Gea told the umpire in French before rushing away. Typically, tennis rules only allow players bathroom breaks at the end of sets, making this unscheduled break a notable occurrence. Khachanov showed some mild frustration at having to wait about 3 minutes during play, which wasn't a normal changeover period. However, Gea later clarified that the umpire allowed him to leave for "medical reasons" and he received pain relief medication for stomach issues during the match. After the match, the 21-year-old revealed he began feeling unwell that morning and his condition worsened during play, compounded by Paris temperatures exceeding 31 degrees Celsius. Khachanov won convincingly in straight sets 6-3, 7-6(3), 6-0. Despite putting up a fight in the second set that went to a tiebreak, Gea couldn't withstand his opponent's composure and strength. The match lasted 2 hours and 38 minutes, marking the end of Gea's Grand Slam debut with a loss. Karen Khachanov, the 30-year-old Russian player, advanced in the tournament.
