Swedish Man Attacked by Brother-in-Law with Machete, Requiring 21 Stitches, Over Three Dead Chicks

A 61-year-old Swedish man was attacked with a machete by his brother-in-law in Sisaket Province after accidentally running over three chicks, suffering severe head injuries requiring 21 stitches. The attacker claimed self-defense from a threat, but police charged him with attempted murder as the case involved a public road dispute escalating from accumulated family tensions. The victim now faces neurological complications and anxiety while awaiting justice, as his attacker remains his neighbor.

5d ago Khaosod

A 61-year-old Swedish national named Jimmy, along with his 58-year-old Thai wife Kalya, filed a complaint on May 14, 2569 through the "Lanta Sai Yai Tong Rawd" Facebook page after being attacked by his brother-in-law Surapol with a machete, resulting in serious head injuries. The incident occurred on March 28 in Khukhan District, Sisaket Province.

The conflict began when Jimmy accidentally ran over three chicks while driving to a garden, failing to notice them on the road. After the chick carcasses were found placed in the house, Surapol waited outside with a machete that evening, attempting to attack Jimmy while he was in his car. Despite relatives attempting to intervene and Jimmy getting out of the car to attempt negotiation and reconciliation, Surapol struck him in the back of the head, causing a severe laceration requiring over 21 stitches. Jimmy was hospitalized for more than a week.

Kalya believes the chicks were merely a pretext, and that the real cause stems from accumulated tensions between the two families over longstanding disputes, including a previous incident involving dogs. Although village elders previously resolved that matter, tensions remained. Surapol claims Jimmy threatened to beat him with a stick first, forcing him to use the machete in self-defense.

Khukhan Police have charged Surapol with "attempted murder" and are gathering evidence for prosecution. Jimmy remains uncompensated and suffers from neurological problems, poor memory, partial leg paralysis, and severe anxiety, as the perpetrator still lives directly across from him and the case remains unresolved.

Ekapon Luang Prasert, founder of the "Lanta Sai Yai Tong Rawd" page, stated that the incident is deeply troubling, expressing sympathy for the foreigner victim who had no intention of hitting the chicks. He emphasized that a machete attack on a public road was unjustified and believes the case has clear evidence. He pledged to coordinate with local police and the Ministry of Justice to seek witness protection and compensation for the victim, while arranging a lawyer from the page to follow the case. He assured all foreign residents that Thai law provides equal protection for both Thai and foreign nationals.

Parliament Halts Agenda on 400 Billion Baht Borrowing Decree, Awaits Constitutional Court Ruling Within 60 Days

Parliament has suspended debate on a proposed 400 billion baht royal decree for energy crisis management and transition after opposition MPs filed a constitutional challenge. The Constitutional Court now has 60 days to rule on whether the decree violates Thailand's constitution, with any unconstitutionality determination requiring at least six of nine justices' approval to invalidate it.

5d ago Khaosod

Parliament postponed the agenda on the 400 billion baht borrowing decree on May 14, 2025, at the House of Representatives meeting. Second Vice Speaker Lert Sakthaichaikhul informed the chamber about the Cabinet's approval of the royal decree granting the Finance Ministry authority to borrow funds to address energy crisis impacts and facilitate Thailand's energy transition, totaling 400 billion baht. Before Speaker Sophon Sarameh could bring the matter to the agenda, Natthapon Rueangphaniyavut, list MP and Democrat Party leader, led 135 MPs—representing more than one-fifth of all MPs—in filing a petition requesting the Speaker refer the decree to the Constitutional Court, challenging its constitutionality under Article 172. Consequently, the decree's agenda item has been suspended pending the Constitutional Court's ruling, as mandated by Article 173 of the Constitution. Under Article 173, the Constitutional Court must complete its review within 60 days of receipt and notify the Speaker of its decision. Should the court rule the decree unconstitutional under Article 172, it will be void from inception. Any such ruling requires approval from at least two-thirds of all Constitutional Court justices—currently six votes out of nine justices. According to reports, Speaker Sophon submitted the petition to the Constitutional Court on May 12, and the court's office has already registered it.

Thai woman stabs boyfriend in anger over his unemploymentLegacyA woman stabbed her boyfriend at a dormitory in Chon Buri on Saturday, May 9, after returning home from work to find him relaxing despite being unemployed. Police from Pan Thong Police Station responded to the incident at a dormitory in Pan Thong district during the evening. Officers found the 22 year old injured man outside the room while rescue workers provided first aid. The victim was wearing a football jersey, shorts, and flip-flops when officers arrived. He suffered a stab wound to his left shoulder. Although the injury was not considered life-threatening, rescue personnel transferred him to the hospital for further treatment and examination. Police identified the suspect as the man’s 28 year old girlfriend, who remained at the scene and surrendered to officers. According to the woman, she returned to the room at around 8pm after finishing work at a factory in the area and found her boyfriend relaxing inside the accommodation. Photo via Matichon She told police that all the lights and electric fans had been left switched on despite him being alone in the room. The woman said she became frustrated because she was responsible for all household expenses after her boyfriend lost his job and moved into her room on April 16. The suspect reportedly claimed she was upset that the man spent his days at home without actively seeking employment while she continued working to support both of them financially. Police said the disagreement escalated into a heated argument before the Chon Buri stabbing occurred. According to the woman’s statement, she stabbed her boyfriend once during the confrontation. The injured man then ran from the room to seek help from neighbours and rescue workers. Photo via Matichon Police have not yet announced formal charges or legal action against the woman. Ex-Girlfriend Questioned in Case of Man Accused of Killing Mistress; Suspect to Be Detained Today as CCTV Captures Body Being Placed in Vehicle

A 40-year-old man surrendered to police with his girlfriend's body after fatally assaulting her in a jealous rage at a boarding house in Nonthaburi. Police have charged him with intentional homicide and plan to detain him today, while also questioning his ex-wife and the victim's friend as key witnesses. CCTV footage captured the crucial moment when he carried the body from the room and loaded it into his vehicle before turning himself in.

5d ago Khaosod

A 40-year-old man named Winai (surname withheld) fatally assaulted his mistress, identified as Joy (surname withheld), before deciding to place her body in his sedan and drive to Bang Bua Thong Police Station to turn himself in. He claimed he became enraged after discovering she had secretly checked into a hotel with another man, prompting him to kick and strike her repeatedly until she died. Upon waking that morning, he found her lifeless.

Deputy Metropolitan Police Commander Chokechai Chanajaroen arrived at Bang Bua Thong Police Station to interrogate Winai. According to the interrogation, before the incident, the victim and suspect had been drinking together, then returned to the boarding house where they argued and fought physically around 1-2 AM before separating to sleep. The suspect believed nothing serious had occurred. At 7 AM, he left to drive a motorcycle taxi as usual and returned to the boarding house at noon on May 13, only to discover his girlfriend dead.

In a moment of panic, the suspect carried the body from the boarding house, placed it in his sedan, and drove around aimlessly before calling his ex-wife for advice. She encouraged him to turn himself in. During questioning, he revealed that his ex-wife was the one who drove him to surrender. The investigation will now summon both the victim's friend and his ex-wife as witnesses.

The initial charge is intentional homicide, with other charges under investigation. Following interrogation, the suspect will be brought before Nonthaburi Provincial Court for detention today. Security camera footage from the boarding house captured the moment at 3:24 PM on May 13 when Winai carried Joy's body—already showing signs of rigor mortis—from room 106 and placed it in the passenger seat of his vehicle before driving away.

Police Reveal Chen Ming Sun as Boss-Level Cambodia Scam Gang Leader, But Not on International Watch List

Police identified Chen Ming Sun as a high-level leader of a Cambodia-based scam and call center gang, though he holds no international alerts despite financial links to fraud networks across Southeast Asia.

5d ago Khaosod

On May 14, 2025, Pol. Lt. Col. Trairongth Phiwphon, spokesperson for the Royal Thai Police, disclosed progress in the Chen Ming Sun case, revealing that investigators have uncovered financial trails linking the suspect to scammer and call center operations in Cambodia. Deputy Police Chief Pol. Gen. Samran Nualma has ordered the Cyber Police to expedite the investigation and collect evidence from all angles, with officials currently analyzing financial pathways, personal connections, and immigration records to establish links to broader online criminal networks.

Based on preliminary investigation data, authorities confirmed that Chen Ming Sun is not a low-level operative within the call center gang, as fraud victims typically refer to such Chinese nationals as "bosses." However, the exact level of his involvement requires further analysis. The national police headquarters is taking the case seriously, with Police Chief Pol. Gen. Kittirat Panpetch having personally conducted initial inspections and assigning Deputy Chief Pol. Gen. Samran to closely oversee the investigation. Thai police have been coordinating continuously with Chinese authorities.

Joint intelligence checks between Thailand and China revealed that Chen Ming Sun has no listing on international watchlists or suspicion alerts in his home country, prompting Thailand to review and strengthen its foreign national screening and surveillance measures. The police are advancing the "One Police" initiative to integrate databases across all agencies, facilitating foreign national checks nationwide. Additionally, the Royal Thai Police is receiving cooperation from LINE Thailand in blocking illegal chat rooms and websites related to online gambling, drug trafficking, weapons sales, and exploitation of children and women. LINE Thailand has shut down over 50% of the illegal accounts and groups reported by police, and authorities are requesting that LINE elevate its proactive detection system to instantly block "flesh rooms" and online scam groups while forwarding data for prosecution. Police also warned the public that joining LINE groups or platforms involved in illegal activities risks falling victim to fraud and potential legal prosecution.

Trump offers platitudes while Xi warns of possible confrontation during China summit

President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping met in Beijing with markedly different tones—Trump offering warm praise while Xi cautioned about potential conflict between the two powers. Xi invoked the "Thucydides Trap" concept to underscore the risks of major power rivalries, suggesting the visit may yield symbolism rather than substantive breakthroughs on contentious issues like trade, Iran, and Taiwan. The elaborate ceremonial welcome featured military salutes and hundreds of schoolchildren, underscoring the diplomatic significance of the summit.

5d ago Khaosod

BEIJING (AP) — President Donald Trump began his trip to Beijing on Thursday by telling Xi Jinping "it's an honor to be your friend," even as his Chinese counterpart offered a cautionary warning about avoiding a possible clash between the two nations.

The stark contrast in tone underscored just how far apart the leaders remain on thorny issues including the war in Iran, trade disputes and Washington's relationship with Taiwan — and suggested that Trump and Xi's highly anticipated meetings are likely to be longer on pageantry and symbolism than major breakthroughs.

In remarks before their meeting at the Great Hall of the People moved behind closed doors, Trump was full of platitudes, saying of Xi, "You're a great leader. Sometimes people don't like me saying it, but I say it anyway, because it's true."

"It's an honor to be with you. It's an honor to be your friend," Trump said before promising that "the relationship between China and the USA is going to be better than ever before."

Xi was darker, expressing hope that the U.S. and China can avoid conflict while saying that history, and the world were asking "whether the two countries can transcend the 'Thucydides Trap' and forge a new model for relations between major powers."

China's leader used a term popular in foreign policy studies, referring to the idea that when a rising power threatens to displace an established power, the result is often war.

"Cooperation benefits both sides, while confrontation harms both," Xi said. "The two countries should be partners rather than rivals, achieve success together and pursue common prosperity, and chart a correct path for major-country relations in the new era."

Xi has mentioned "Thucydides Trap" before with regards to U.S.-China relations, dating back to as early as 2014. China's leader included it in his messages to Trump's predecessor, Democratic President Joe Biden, in 2022 and 2024. Still, his evoking the term as Trump began his visit with optimism was noteworthy.

The remarks from each followed a sweeping greeting for Trump outside the Great Hall of the People, an imposing building on Tiananmen Square that houses China's legislature. Cannons boomed a welcome salute and a band played "The Star-Spangled Banner" and China's national anthem.

The hall featured giant, red-carpeted steps and huge expanses of marble, where soldiers hung large American and Chinese flags. School children in bright colors offered a welcome routine, jumping as the girls waved flowers and the boys hoisted American and Chinese flags while the two leaders walked past them.

Cuba has completely run out of diesel and fuel oil

Cuba has exhausted its diesel and fuel oil reserves amid a severe electricity crisis exacerbated by U.S. restrictions on fuel shipments. The shortage has caused widespread blackouts across the country, with some areas in Havana experiencing power outages lasting more than 20 hours daily. The fuel embargo, now in its fourth month, continues to strain Cuba's ability to maintain its power grid and essential public services.

5d ago Khaosod

HAVANA — Cuba has run out of diesel and fuel oil supplies as the country faces a worsening electricity crisis linked to U.S. restrictions on fuel shipments, Energy and Mines Minister Vicente de la O said on 14 May 2026.

The minister said prolonged fuel shortages had severely affected Cuba's power grid, contributing to major blackouts across the country in recent months.

In Havana, some areas have been left without electricity for more than 20 hours a day, officials said.

Cuba's electricity system relies on domestically produced crude oil, natural gas and renewable energy sources.

Authorities said Cuba has been attempting to negotiate fuel imports despite restrictions imposed by the United States, while global oil prices and ongoing conflicts have further complicated supply efforts.

U.S. measures blocking fuel shipments to Cuba have now entered a fourth month, affecting public services nationwide, officials said.

Bangchak Corporation Reports Refining Business EBITDA of 10,245 Million Baht, Over 100% Increase

Bangchak Corporation reported strong first quarter 2025 results with refining business EBITDA surging over 100% to 10,245 million baht, driven by a 6% revenue increase and 40% EBITDA growth across the group. The company successfully navigated volatile global energy markets and geopolitical tensions, achieving record petroleum sales of 3,700 million liters while expanding into sustainable aviation fuel production. Despite rising crude costs and shipping risks from Middle East uncertainty, Bangchak has secured supplies through July 2025 and introduced consumer relief measures including B20 diesel options and fuel exchange programs.

5d ago Khaosod

Bangchak Corporation unveiled its first quarter 2025 performance, posting net profit (excluding special items) of 953 million baht, with the refining business achieving EBITDA of 10,245 million baht—more than double year-over-year. CEO Chaiwat Kovavisa reported that the group generated 142,528 million baht in revenue and service income, a 6% increase from the prior year period, while EBITDA climbed 40% to 17,795 million baht.

The company recorded normal operating profit of 953 million baht excluding special items. Including special items recognized in the quarter, parent company profit reached 6,144 million baht, more than doubling compared to the same period last year, translating to earnings per share of 4.17 baht. Bangchak successfully managed operations and its supply chain amid volatile global energy markets shaped by supply tensions and geopolitical uncertainty, achieving average production of 279,800 barrels per day with total petroleum sales of 3,700 million liters, a record high.

However, uncertainties surrounding Middle East tensions, rising energy costs, and global crude price volatility remain concerns the company is closely monitoring to adjust business plans accordingly. Since March 2025, Bangchak has maintained its commitment to ensuring the country's energy supply and delivery, sourcing quality crude from multiple global regions. In the first quarter, the company experienced limited direct impact from Middle East conflict due to its diversified crude supply strategy.

Nevertheless, supply route uncertainties through the Strait of Hormuz and Middle East tensions have driven up crude costs, crude premiums, shipping, and insurance expenses, reflecting war risk premiums that the company will recognize progressively from the second quarter onward. Bangchak is maximizing efforts to source additional crude from new sources to maintain refining rates and meet domestic energy demand, having already secured supplies through July 2025 while closely monitoring the energy situation and adjusting operations accordingly to manage costs and business continuity.

The company has complied with relevant regulations and cooperated with authorities on consumer assistance measures, including launching B20 diesel as an alternative for transport, fishing, and industrial sectors. It also continues the "Fry to Fly—2 liters exchanged for 1 liter" program under the concept of "cooking oil for vehicle fuel exchange" to help ease consumers' cost-of-living burden.

Additionally, a 700,000-barrel crude tanker safely transited the Strait of Hormuz and reached Bangchak's Sri Racha refinery as planned. The company is also supporting the sourcing of feedstock for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production, which has commenced with initial product delivery scheduled for May 2025. The group continues to recognize recurring synergies and benefits from operational efficiency improvements at two refineries, totaling approximately 2,800 million baht, compared to 1,800 million baht in 2024.

Motorcycle Repair Shop Hit With Shocking 40,000 Baht Water Bill for Two Months Using 920,000 Liters Despite Normal Meter and No Leaks

A motorcycle repair shop owner in Udon Thani province received a shocking 41,839 baht water bill for two months, with readings showing 920,000 liters of consumption despite the shop operating only during daytime hours. Inspections found the meter functioning normally with no visible pipe leaks, but the case has been escalated to the provincial waterworks office for further investigation.

5d ago Khaosod

On May 14, 2569, reporters visited a motorcycle repair shop on Mittraphap Road (Udon Thani-Nong Khai route) in Muban Tha Toom, Mueang District, Udon Thani Province, after receiving complaints about an unusually high water bill. The shop owner, 35-year-old Nai Golf, showed bills indicating 20,593.76 baht for April and 21,245.39 baht for May—totaling 41,839.15 baht for consuming 922,000 liters of water. This seemed unreasonable for a rented room where the shop operated only during daytime hours, with the owner returning to his home in Phen District at night.

Nai Golf explained that he normally pays only 300-400 baht per month for water. In April, he received no bill and thus paid nothing. When the May bill arrived on May 7, it combined both months' charges, shocking him with the enormous total. Although he suspected a leak, there were no signs of water damage, and the above-ground pipes showed no visible ruptures.

Initial inspections by provincial waterworks officials found the meter functioning normally—it rotated when water flowed and stopped when the valve closed. No leaks were detected inside the house. Officials told him to pay according to the bill or submit a request for installment payments. Unsatisfied with this response, Nai Golf contacted the media for investigation.

A second inspection by Isarin, the service head of the provincial waterworks in Udon Thani, confirmed the meter was functioning properly and showed normal readings. However, officials noted there was an outdoor faucet and that the meter readings matched both months of readings taken by the meter reader. The case has been referred to the provincial waterworks office for further review and resolution, with the owner to be notified of the outcome.
