Brutal Motive Revealed: Ex-Son-in-Law Shoots Ex-Father-in-Law and Sister-in-Law in Double Killing, Confesses Resentment Over Former Mother-in-Law
A 47-year-old man shot and killed his ex-father-in-law and ex-brother-in-law in Kanchanaburi on May 6, confessing that accumulated resentment over his ex-mother-in-law's refusal to divide property after their divorce sparked the attack.
A 47-year-old ex-son-in-law named Chayant opened fire at a residence in Lad Yao subdistrict, Mueang Kanchanaburi district, on the evening of May 6, injuring 53-year-old former mother-in-law Sarine and fatally shooting 35-year-old Satya (his ex-wife's brother) and 64-year-old Songwon (his ex-father-in-law). Security camera footage clearly captured Chayant's actions as he fled across the road and into a forest opposite the house.
Police from Lad Yao Station launched a full-scale manhunt on May 7, discovering that Chayant had fled approximately 3 kilometers away to hide in the hills. Using loudspeakers, officers persuaded him to surrender after about 30 minutes of negotiation. Chayant came down and turned himself in along with a 9mm pistol used in the attack.
During questioning, Chayant confessed to carrying out the attack. He initially planned to shoot only his ex-mother-in-law but decided to open fire on all three people when he found them at the scene before fleeing.
Chayant explained his motive stemmed from accumulated resentment toward his former mother-in-law. He claimed that when he discovered his then-wife was seeing another man last year, he reported it to his mother-in-law hoping she would intervene. Instead, she sided with his wife, eventually leading to their divorce. During property division negotiations, his ex-mother-in-law refused to divide assets and land—including a 600-700 rai sugarcane plantation—that he and his ex-wife had developed together. When Chayant attempted to request a 20-rai portion of the sugarcane field to generate income, his mother-in-law refused, which accumulated into the rage that triggered this violent incident.
