Sticky Rice with Mango Vendor Dispute Turns Fatal: Man Dies After Being Stabbed During Street Fight
A dispute between rival sticky rice and mango vendors in Chiang Mai turned deadly when one stabbed the other during a street confrontation, with the victim dying from a severe rib wound.
When a new vendor proved more successful than the original, the displaced sticky rice and mango seller set up shop nearby, triggering endless disputes. The situation reached a breaking point today when the new vendor's relative arrived, leading to a violent confrontation. When the rival vendor arrived on scene, heated words were exchanged, and he pulled out two mango-peeling knives ostensibly to intimidate. However, the victim challenged him to stab him, apparently doubting his opponent's courage. The vendor responded by driving a knife deep into the victim's ribs. The man's body was thrown against the overturned mango cart by the force of the blow. At 9 p.m. on May 4, police from Muang Chiang Mai Station responded to reports of a violent dispute near Wat Phan On intersection. Officers found an overturned sticky rice cart with fruit scattered across the area. The 50-year-old victim had suffered a severe stab wound to his ribs and was rushed to the hospital, where he later died. The vendor was detained at the scene, and a bloodstained mango-peeling knife was recovered as evidence. Investigation revealed that the vendor had previously sold sticky rice with mango in the area but relocated due to poor sales. A 70-year-old woman then took over the original spot and proved highly successful. Learning of this, the original vendor returned to set up nearby, leading to constant bickering. The conflict culminated in today's fatal encounter.
