PM Orders Deep Investigation into Chinese Man Found with Cache of Military Weapons; Possible Links to BHQ Gang

Police discovered large quantities of military weapons and explosives in a vehicle driven by a Chinese national in Chachoengsao, prompting the Prime Minister to order a comprehensive investigation into possible links to organized crime.

9 May Khaosod

Prime Minister Anusorn Chanyaveerakul has ordered a comprehensive investigation into an incident in which police from Nah Jom Thien Station in Chachoengsao discovered large quantities of military weapons and explosives in a vehicle driven by a Chinese national. Speaking at 14:20 on May 9, 2025, at Royal Thai Air Force Base 2, Wing 6, the PM stated he received an initial brief report from the National Police Chief about the vehicle rollover incident. He emphasized the need for a thorough and decisive investigation to determine the underlying causes and identify all responsible parties.

The Prime Minister raised concerns about how a foreigner could possess such weapons, reiterating that no one outside law enforcement is permitted to carry firearms or weapons. Anyone caught carrying weapons without authorization faces multiple additional charges. He noted this raises questions about how such an incident could occur despite strict regulations.

When asked about weapons that appeared to be military-grade and findings on the suspect's mobile phone that might be linked to the BHQ gang, the PM stated this requires urgent investigation. He acknowledged potential connections to visa fraud issues but called on police and security officials to conduct thorough and detailed inquiries first.

MRTA pushes ahead with four new Bangkok rail projects

Thailand's Mass Rapid Transit Authority is advancing four new Bangkok rail projects including lines to Suvarnabhumi Airport and connections across the city, with construction timelines ranging from immediate to after 2029.

9 May Khaosod

BANGKOK — The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) is moving forward with plans for four new rail transit projects in Bangkok, including the Brown, Silver, Grey and Blue lines, according to MRTA governor Kajpachon Udomthamphakdi. The first project is the Brown Line connecting Khae Rai and Lam Sali (Bueng Kum), covering 22.1 kilometres. Kajpachon said the MRTA would continue to push ahead with the project as planned. The second project is the Silver Line, a 19.7-kilometre light rail transit (LRT) route linking Bang Na and Suvarnabhumi Airport. The project is currently under review to improve integration with the airport terminal. MRTA will also conduct a new environmental impact assessment (EIA), as the previous study is more than five years old. The review process is expected to begin within the next two to three months and take around one year. Kajpachon said the third project, the Grey Line monorail connecting Watcharaphon and Thong Lo over 16.3 kilometres, is also being revised to better match current conditions. The proposal is expected to be submitted to the MRTA board in 2027. The fourth project is the Blue Line monorail linking Din Daeng and Sathorn over 6.7 kilometres. MRTA expects studies for the route to begin after 2029 in line with priorities under the M-MAP2 transport development plan.

Thailand's Third Army Region has launched its 12th tactical attack drone commander training course, featuring demonstrations of reconnaissance drones, bomb-dropping drones and night-time tactical operations aimed at strengthening the capabilities of the Naresuan Force. The training inspection took place on 8 May at the shooting range of the 310th Military Circle at Fort Wachiraprakarn in Tak province.

Lt. Gen. Worathep Boonya, commander of the Third Army Region and head of the Third Army Region Operations Centre, visited the training programme to monitor the development of military personnel in modern warfare technology. He was welcomed by Col. Narongchai Charoenchai, deputy commander of the Naresuan Force, along with instructors and trainees participating in the course.

According to the army, the programme is designed to improve soldiers' operational skills in the use of tactical unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for security missions, reconnaissance, surveillance and modern military operations. The army said drone technology had become an increasingly important component of contemporary warfare.

During the visit, military personnel demonstrated several types of tactical drones, including reconnaissance drones, bomb-dropping drones, incendiary drones and FPV (first-person view) drones. Officials said the drones could be adapted for intelligence gathering, target tracking, border surveillance and tactical operations, including special operations and night-time bombing missions.

The Third Army Region commander also met trainees and instructors, stressing the importance of adapting to rapidly evolving military technology and new forms of security threats. He praised the Naresuan Force for conducting systematic and modern training in line with the Thai army's push toward a more technology-driven military.

9 May Khaosod

BANGKOK — Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul on Saturday welcomed the upcoming release of former premier Thaksin Shinawatra, saying he still respects Thaksin after working under him for more than two decades.

Speaking to reporters on 9 May, Anutin said he wished to congratulate Thaksin and his family ahead of the former prime minister's expected release from detention on 11 May.

"I still respect him. I used to work under him for more than 20 years. We have a close relationship, like family," Anutin said.

When asked whether he planned to seek advice from Thaksin on issues the former premier was known to have expertise in, Anutin said there was no restriction against meeting him.

However, he said Thaksin should first be allowed to spend time with his family following his release.

"Bangkok is small. Someday we may have a chance to meet under different occasions," he said.

Anutin added that Thaksin would still be under parole conditions after his release, meaning there would likely still be restrictions and limited convenience for outside visitors.

Asked whether Thaksin's return could trigger political ripple effects if he remained active in politics, Anutin said he had not thought that far ahead.

"Regardless, he is still someone I respect," the prime minister said.

Structural Engineers Association Chair Advises Investigation into Soil Movement Following Charoen Sanit Road Collapse

A road collapse on Charoen Sanit Road near Fai Chao intersection is likely caused by soil loss beneath the roadbed, with engineers recommending investigation into underground utilities and soil movement that has triggered similar incidents

9 May Khaosod

The Structural Engineers Association chair has advised investigation into soil movement concerning the Charoen Sanit Road collapse, revealing such incidents have occurred previously in 2021 and 2023. May 9, 2026 – Prof. Dr. Amorn Pimanmak, president of Thailand's Structural Engineers Association, commented on the road collapse on Charoen Sanit Road at Vijai Hospital near the Fai Chao intersection. Prof. Dr. Amorn disclosed that the Charoen Sanit Road collapse has happened multiple times in 2021 and 2023. Analyzing photographs from today's incident, the collapse appears as a single-lane subsidence with the road fractured in a V-shape, not damage to the road surface itself but rather loss of supporting soil beneath the roadbed. Regarding possible causes, the following have been identified: 1. Underground utility pipes or vaults in the area, such as electrical conduit chambers, may have leaked at connection points where pipes meet vaults or at other locations, allowing soil to flow into these vaults; 2. Combined with potential rainfall during this period making soil saturated, it may flow more easily than usual; 3. Possible nearby construction activity with excavation or exposed soil that could allow soil movement; 4. Broken water or drainage pipes that allow water to carry soil away. All of these remain speculative, and relevant authorities will need to conduct on-site inspections of underground utilities in the affected area to determine the actual cause. However, this collapse appears less severe than the Vajira Hospital road collapse, as that incident was located near underground train construction, though monitoring is advisable to check for further expansion. Relevant authorities should investigate soil movement, particularly during the rainy season when saturated soil flows more easily, using scanning equipment to check underground pits or vaults at regular intervals, as even small holes could pose hazards to drivers.

PM Stays Out of Fray as Former Interior Ministry Officials Plan Lawsuit Against Permanent Secretary

Prime Minister Anuthın Charnweerakul declared he will not intervene in a legal dispute between two former Interior Ministry officials and the ministry's permanent secretary over disputed personnel transfers. The Civil Service Commission ruled the transfers unlawful, but the PM assured the controversy would not impact ministry operations, emphasizing the matter is separate from his ministerial duties.

9 May Khaosod

Prime Minister Anuthın Charnweerakul remained publicly neutral on May 9, 2569 at Royal Thai Air Force Base 2, Squadron 6, regarding a Civil Service Commission (CSC) resolution involving the transfer of former Interior Ministry officials Chaiyavat Junthirapongse, former director-general of the Department of Local Administration, and Naruesha Khosaasivilai, former director-general of the Department of Community Development. The CSC ruled the transfers by then-Interior Minister Bhumitham Vejyachai and Permanent Secretary Arrsisit Samphanrat were unlawful, prompting both officials to plan legal action against the permanent secretary.

When asked if the dispute would impact ministry work, Anuthın stated firmly it would not, calling them separate matters. "This is a matter of discretionary use and CSC authority, which is an independent agency," he said. "Those affected can proceed through proper legal channels without affecting Interior Ministry operations."

Anuthın further distanced himself from the controversy, saying: "To put it simply, I'm not involved. I'm still Interior Minister, so everyone must follow my policies to alleviate suffering and promote public welfare—that's what matters." When asked if he would take sides, the PM declined, saying at his age any grudge would be expired anyway, and involvement would turn it into ministerial interference rather than a personal matter.
