Pattana Accelerates 'Community Volunteer Nurse' Program with 15,000 Baht Monthly Salary to Serve One Subdistrict

Thailand's Public Health Ministry is launching an accelerated Community Volunteer Nurse Program, deploying trained nurses earning 15,000 baht monthly to provide home care in underserved communities, starting with one nurse per subdistrict.

14 May Khaosod

On May 14, 2569, Public Health Minister Pattana Prom-Pattana announced the acceleration of the Community Volunteer Nurse Program (อสพ.) following a high-level executive meeting. The program will deploy trained volunteer nurses earning a minimum of 15,000 baht monthly to care for homebound patients, elderly patients, those with chronic diseases, mental health patients, and others in their communities, beginning with one volunteer nurse per subdistrict and expanding to one per village within three years.

The volunteer nurses will undergo both theoretical and practical training in June before deploying to communities in July-August. Unlike healthcare volunteers (อสม.), these will be full-time caregivers holding bachelor's degrees and working on a supplementary basis to reduce the burden on families whose members must leave employment for caregiving. The initial budget will come from central government allocations in the 2570 fiscal year, placing no burden on hospitals or local health facilities.

Regarding Thailand's participation in the World Health Assembly (WHA) scheduled for May 17-27, Minister Pattana confirmed that 22 countries have already expressed interest in bilateral discussions following Thailand's cabinet approval to propose a candidate for WHO Director-General to succeed Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, whose term ends mid-2570. The Foreign Ministry and Public Health Ministry are currently consulting on the candidate selection, with nominations already received and discussions ongoing with qualified individuals.

Police Division 8 Expands Drug Bust, Seizes 500,000 Methamphetamine Pills from Major Trafficking Ring in Khlong Song Area

Police Division 8 arrested two men and seized 500,000 methamphetamine pills from a vehicle in Pathum Thani's Khlong Song area after dismantling a major drug trafficking ring that supplied smaller dealers throughout the region.

14 May Khaosod

On May 14, 2025, Police Division 8 commanders including Maj. Gen. Saiyam Bunsombat, Maj. Gen. Nopsilp Poolswat, and other officers conducted a joint operation to arrest Nattaphol, 27, and Surachet, 25, along with 500,000 methamphetamine pills hidden in a black Toyota Fortuner (license plate 6ขร-4609 Bangkok) parked outside a condominium on Navi 2 Road in Khlong Song, Pathum Thani.

Police had been investigating a small-scale dealer network and traced it back to a major drug trafficking operation in the Khlong Song area. The network was using the Toyota Fortuner to distribute large quantities of methamphetamine to smaller dealers, typically driven by 3-4 individuals during nighttime deliveries. After surveillance confirmed suspicious activity on May 12, officers planned the operation and positioned units around the area.

At approximately 10:30 p.m., the two suspects approached the vehicle to prepare for a drug delivery run when officers moved in to make the arrest. Police seized 500,000 methamphetamine pills from the vehicle. Searches of the suspects' residences and meeting locations yielded no additional illegal items.

The suspects face charges of drug trafficking (Category 1 - methamphetamine) with intent to distribute for commercial purposes, causing drug spread among the public, and endangering national security and public safety. Police have transferred them to Division 8 for formal arrest documentation and will pursue expanded charges against the entire trafficking network, including conspiracy and money laundering allegations, in coordination with the Office of the Narcotics Control Board for asset seizure and further legal proceedings.

Gerrard Insists Liverpool Should Not Let Curtis Jones Leave This Summer

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard says the club should retain midfielder Curtis Jones, an academy graduate who has attracted interest from Inter Milan and English clubs, arguing homegrown talent is vital to the team's identity.

14 May Khaosod

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has stressed that the Reds should not let Curtis Jones, a player who came through the club's youth system, leave the team this summer. Curtis Jones has been reported to have caught the attention of Inter Milan in January and has previously been linked with English sides Tottenham and Aston Villa. Most recently, Gerrard emphasized that Liverpool must hold onto players developed through their academy system who can deliver strong performances. "I believe this academy system is incredibly important. It's crucial that we continue to produce talented players from the local area," Gerrard said. "I think it's natural for someone who lives in the city, grows up in the city—we understand what the club needs, the style, and what the fans want." "It's embedded in us because we know this city well. I wouldn't let Curtis Jones leave, just as I would have hoped Trent Alexander-Arnold wouldn't have left us either." "But of course, you have to understand and respect every player's own career path, and everyone is entitled to make their own decisions."

Why Thailand Must Oppose Religious Mobs, Whether Islamic or Buddhist

A mob of about 1,000 Thai Muslims publicly punished a trans woman in Bangkok for alleged Koran mockery on social media, highlighting Thailand's need to reject religious vigilantism and enforce rule of law.

14 May Khaosod

In scenes reminiscent of Taliban-controlled Kabul or conservative Islamic cities in the Middle East, an angry mob of about 1,000 Thai Muslims surrounded a tea shop in Bangkok's Ramkhamhaeng area on Sunday, blocking the street as they hunted for a Muslim trans woman known as 'Madam Lor' or Abdulloh, who allegedly mocked the Koran on social media.

Despite police presence, the mob publicly shaved Abdulloh's head as punishment. Chants of "Allahu Akbar!" filled the air, with participants claiming the punishment was voluntary and that Abdulloh had repented. A police officer present made no attempt to stop the extrajudicial punishment.

With Muslims comprising less than 5 percent of Thailand's 67 million population—roughly three million people—the mob's attempt to impose religious law is particularly troubling in a Buddhist-majority nation that is not governed as a religious state. The vigilante punishment of Abdulloh must be condemned. Thailand operates under the rule of law, not mob justice. Any alleged religious offense should be handled through proper legal channels.

Large gatherings of Muslims seeking to intimidate and humiliate someone in this manner risk escalating fear and mistrust among other faith communities and non-religious people, especially as anti-Muslim sentiment already rises in parts of Europe and the UK. Thai society faces enough divisions without religious mob intimidation deepening social anxiety and distrust. Meanwhile, those criticizing any religion should do so respectfully and constructively. Police should arrest anyone who committed crimes during the incident.

By Wednesday evening, a Buddhist volunteer Facebook page capitalized on the incident by claiming Buddhism is somehow "superior," arguing that Buddhism opposes war and forbids animal killing—unlike Islam. In reality, most Thai Buddhists supported last year's conflict with Cambodia, and the majority consume meat, including Buddhist monks in Thailand.

What's particularly striking about this incident is that apparent inconsistency among self-described progressives appears rooted in convenience rather than principle. Most remained silent during Sunday's mob frenzy. Prominent Islam critic and activist Chotisak Onsoong called them out on Facebook Wednesday:

"'Progressive only when convenient' seems to define how many so-called Thai progressives approach matters of faith. These people readily mock religions and beliefs—whether Jesus, Siddhartha, the Pope, or Buddhist monks—yet remain silent when others face persecution."

14 May Khaosod

On May 14, police from Mae Ping Station in Chiang Mai, working with military personnel and relevant agencies, arrested three suspects and seized 1.8 million methamphetamine pills during a coordinated operation at Chiang Mai's third intercity bus station (Arcade) in Wat Kaet subdistrict, Muang district.

A young couple renting a motorcycle for sightseeing died in a collision with a pickup truck while descending Doi Inthanon in Chiang Mai on May 14, after heavy rain made the steep road slippery.

14 May Khaosod

A tragic accident claimed the lives of a young man and woman who rented a motorcycle for sightseeing in Chiang Mai after encountering heavy rain while descending Doi Inthanon. At 12:20 p.m. on May 14, 2569, Chom Thong Police Station in Chiang Mai received reports of a motorcycle-pickup truck collision on a curved descent section of Doi Inthanon road at kilometer markers 22-23, resulting in fatalities and serious injuries. Officers and rescue personnel from Chom Thong Hospital, Ban Luang Subdistrict rescue, and Doi Inthanon National Park rushed to the scene. At the accident site, a female victim was found deceased while a male victim suffered critical injuries. A red Honda PCX motorcycle lay overturned with debris scattered across the roadway, while the pickup truck's front end was severely damaged. The injured male was transported to Chom Thong Hospital but succumbed to his severe injuries. Preliminary investigation determined that the deceased couple had rented the motorcycle to travel up Doi Inthanon for sightseeing. While descending the steep downhill section where the accident occurred, recent rainfall made the road slippery, causing the motorcycle to lose traction, veer off the curve, and violently collide with the pickup truck. Authorities will conduct further investigation to determine the exact cause and proceed with legal proceedings.
