Parking Lot Worker Starts Fire to Cook Rice, Flames Spread to 10-Wheeler Truck, Destroying 3 Vehicles

A parking lot worker accidentally started a fire while cooking rice behind a parked truck in Bangkok on April 30, destroying all three vehicles when wind-blown sparks ignited sawdust nearby.

30 Apr Khaosod

At 3:30 PM on April 30, 2569, Deputy Investigation Officer Surachet Khanthong from Tha Kham Police Station received a report of a truck fire on Soi Prachauthit 76, Tha Kham Sub-district, Bang Khun Thian District, Bangkok. He and firefighters from Bang Khun Thian Fire Station and rescue team responded to the scene.

The incident occurred near Wat Bua Phan, an abandoned area surrounded by grassland and acacia trees. Investigators found a 12-wheeler truck carrying sawdust engulfed in flames, which then spread to a 10-wheeler truck carrying wood and a 6-wheeler truck parked nearby. All three vehicles caught fire. Firefighters used water jets to control the blaze, which took 30 minutes to extinguish. All three trucks were completely destroyed. Investigators found stones arranged as a stove, metal grates, a rice cooking pot, and firewood at the rear of the sawdust truck, which they collected as evidence.

The investigation revealed the lot belonged to an owner who was not using it. The truck owner leased the space to park four trucks. Previously, the trucks were used for soil transportation, but with no current work, they were unregistered and reported to the Department of Land Transport. Two workers were hired to guard the premises, living in a nearby shipping container.

Before the incident, there was intense sun. Neighbors witnessed the workers using the truck's shadow for shade before lighting a fire at the rear of the truck to prepare food. When the fire ignited, strong wind gusts blew sparks onto a pile of sawdust, which is highly flammable. The fire rapidly spread to all three trucks and nearby grassland before both workers fled in panic.

Police are currently interrogating the truck owner and tracking down both workers for questioning before proceeding with legal action.

Industrial Estate Authority Embraces Varawut's 'Quick Win' Policy on Deep-Sea Port Development in Chumphon-Ranong

Thailand's industry minister outlined plans to develop a deep-sea port in Chumphon-Ranong while streamlining factory regulations, emphasizing environmental assessments and local community consultation alongside infrastructure modernization.

30 Apr Khaosod

Industry Minister Varawut Silpaarch chaired a policy briefing for the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT), announcing plans to efficiently manage the deep-sea port in Chumphon-Ranong while considering the Landbridge project. The port location requires careful deliberation on whether infrastructure should be ground-level or elevated to support cargo transfer via rail, road, and pipeline systems connecting to the Malacca Strait route.

The minister stressed the need for comprehensive environmental impact assessments and cost-benefit analysis, particularly given geopolitical shifts affecting global trade. He emphasized that local communities in Chumphon and Ranong, as stakeholders, must be consulted. Balancing development with environmental protection is crucial—comparing accelerating development without braking measures to inevitable accidents, while only applying brakes prevents national progress.

Varawut assigned IEAT to elevate factory standards within industrial estates as a national model for waste management, wastewater treatment, and air pollution control. Factory operators should gain assurance that international environmental standards protect surrounding communities while facilitating logistics oversight.

Regarding overlapping regulations between the Industrial Estate Act and Factory Act, the minister ordered the permanent secretary to review and resolve regulatory conflicts to streamline procedures and accelerate factory establishment. The government is implementing a One Stop Service policy across the Industry, Commerce, and Interior Ministries to coordinate factory licensing more efficiently, targeting foreign direct investment (FDI) attraction.

"Our main challenge is outdated laws predating my birth," Varawut stated. "The Bhumjaithai-led government prioritizes reforming these regulations so civil servants aren't hampered by obsolete rules. Whatever can be resolved through cabinet resolution or ministerial decree will be expedited immediately."

Big Joke's Lawyer Files Human Rights Complaint Against Police Spokesperson Over Press Conference Releasing Audio Clips

Former Deputy National Police Commander Surachet Hakphaul filed a human rights complaint against the police spokesperson for releasing audio recordings at a press conference in a bribery case, arguing it violated presumption of innocence an

30 Apr Khaosod

On April 30, 2025, former Deputy National Police Commander Pol. Gen. Surachet Hakphaul assigned his private attorney Sanyaphach Samard to file a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) regarding Police Spokesperson Pol. Col. Trairongg Piwphrn and related police officers involved in a 246-baht gold bribery case. The complaint alleges that the spokesperson's press conference, which included the release of telephone conversation recordings, constitutes public manipulation and judicial interference, thereby violating human rights and human dignity.

Attorney Sanyaphach stated that the complaint has been submitted to both the NHRC and the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). He argued that the press conference violated proper legal procedure, as evidence should be presented in court, not on television. He emphasized that the accused maintains the presumption of innocence and that such public exposure could prejudicially affect the case and violate constitutional rights.

The attorney contended that releasing the audio clips was a form of public humiliation and degradation that contradicts the constitutional presumption of innocence. He noted that the investigation file had already been submitted to the Attorney General's Anti-Corruption Division on April 8, 2025, meaning the police spokesperson no longer had authority over the matter at the time of the press conference.

Sanyaphach further argued that proper legal proceedings should follow constitutional protocols and the Anti-Corruption Act B.E. 2561, Section 45, Paragraph 2. He called for the NHRC to investigate whether the police spokesperson's actions violated human rights laws and constitute a breach of their own regulations.

Ms. Pitikanjana Sitthidej of the NHRC confirmed receipt of the complaint and stated that the case will be reviewed according to procedures for alleged human rights violations, noting that the accused still maintains the presumption of innocence until proven otherwise.

Health Alert: Avoid Eating Shrimp and Shellfish as Third Arsenic Test Shows Contamination Across Mae Saliang-Sob Moei Waterways

Thailand's Pollution Control Department has confirmed a third round of testing showing dangerous arsenic levels in the Mae Saliang-Sob Moei waterways in Mae Hong Son Province, with concentrations up to 82 mg/kg—well above the 33 mg/kg safety threshold. Health authorities are advising residents to avoid eating shrimp, shellfish, and other bottom-dwelling aquatic animals due to the risk of heavy metal accumulation in the food chain, though current seafood samples still meet consumption standards.

30 Apr Khaosod

The Pollution Control Department (PCD) under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment announced on April 30, 2025 that the third round of sediment sampling from the Salween River conducted between March 24-27 showed continued arsenic contamination. Samples were collected from monitoring points SAL08 (Ban Tha Ta Fang) through SAL13 (Ban Sob Moei) in Mae Hong Son Province.

Analysis results revealed that arsenic (As) levels at all six monitoring points exceeded the severe safety standard of 33 mg/kg, with concentrations ranging from 41-82 mg/kg. The highest reading of 82 mg/kg was recorded at SAL09 at the boundary between Sob Moei and Mae Saliang districts, while SAL08 measured 49 mg/kg, SAL10 measured 43 mg/kg, SAL11 measured 55 mg/kg, SAL12 measured 41 mg/kg, and SAL13 measured 50 mg/kg.

Testing of tributary water quality also revealed contamination in certain areas. The Mae Samlab River showed 16 mg/kg of arsenic, the Mae Yuam River contained 17 mg/kg arsenic along with 56 mg/kg chromium and 25 mg/kg nickel, and the Mae Pai River had 11 mg/kg arsenic. The Mae Po and Mae Kong Ka rivers tested within acceptable standards. Other heavy metals including lead, cadmium, copper, zinc, mercury, and manganese remained within safe limits.

Although current aquatic animal samples still fall within safe consumption levels, the PCD warned that arsenic accumulates in the food chain over time. Authorities recommend always cooking food thoroughly, avoiding repeated consumption of the same aquatic species, reducing intake of bottom-dwelling creatures like shrimp and shellfish, and avoiding fish organs, which are primary accumulation sites for contaminants. The department will continue monitoring water quality and coordinating with relevant agencies to protect public health.

Sri Lanka Launches Investigation as $20 Million Foreign Currency Payment Goes Missing; USPS Confirms Funds Not Received

Sri Lanka launched an investigation after $20 million in foreign currency sent to the U.S. Postal Service went missing, with USPS confirming it never received the funds.

30 Apr Khaosod

Sri Lanka is accelerating its investigation into the missing funds. As of April 30, according to Xinhua, Sri Lankan authorities initiated an inquiry into a foreign currency payment made by the Department of Posts to the United States Postal Service (USPS), which has confirmed it has not received 625,000 US dollars, or approximately 20.4 million baht.

The Department of Posts has launched an internal investigation while the Criminal Investigation Department conducts a parallel probe. Financial irregularities of this nature must undergo departmental-level review before law enforcement officials proceed with investigations following a formal complaint.

This issue has occurred more than once in the past, necessitating a more thorough examination of the payment processing procedures. However, no additional details have been disclosed regarding the transaction mechanism or the progress of the investigation.

Iran Misses FIFA Meeting Ahead of World Cup After Canada Entry Ban

Iran's Football Federation was prevented from attending a pre-World Cup FIFA meeting in Canada after its delegation leader, President Mehdi Taj, was denied entry due to his past affiliation with the IRGC, which Canada designates as a terrorist organization. Canadian authorities revoked his visa after initially approving it, though Canada's Foreign Minister stated the ban was unintentional. Iran's participation in the 2026 World Cup remains uncertain amid ongoing tensions with the United States.

30 Apr Khaosod

Iran's Football Federation has announced that its officials were barred from entering Canada, preventing them from attending an FIFA meeting in Vancouver on April 30 ahead of the 2026 World Cup. The federation stated that a delegation led by President Mehdi Taj had obtained official visas to travel to Toronto but were denied entry by Canadian authorities, citing inappropriate conduct by immigration officers.

According to Iran's IRNA news agency, Taj's visa was approved on Monday but revoked on Tuesday because he is a former official of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which Canada designates as a terrorist organization. The Canadian government responded by stating: "While we cannot comment on individual cases due to privacy laws, our government has consistently maintained that IRGC members are not permitted entry to our country."

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand clarified that the ban was not intentional, saying "It was not a direct order from me, but I understand that permission to travel to the country was revoked. It happened unintentionally, and I will have the Immigration Minister explain further." The 2026 World Cup will be co-hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico, launching on June 11, though Iran's participation remains uncertain following recent military tensions with the United States.

30 Apr Khaosod

A female police officer affiliated with the Metropolitan Police Bureau filed a complaint after being taken to a budget hotel on Khlong Prasap Road by a male colleague from Pak Kret Police Station on February 18. After she contacted her mother for help, her commando boyfriend discovered the incident and confronted the officer, leading to her being dropped off at a shopping mall instead. The case was filed on February 19 but showed no progress, prompting the couple to go public through media.

The accused officer has since been reassigned to document work with no public-facing duties and was absent from duty on the day reporters visited. Police Station Commander Pol.Col. Adirek Thonggamaekeo stated that he received the complaint in February and immediately began investigating, conducting victim interviews, medical examination, collecting clothing for DNA analysis, and questioning witnesses. He explained that delays were due to waiting for forensic results, which were only recently returned on Monday. The case is now being compiled for submission to prosecutors. The commander emphasized that the investigation is thorough and asserted that whoever is guilty will face consequences without favoritism. Until the court decides, he imposed administrative measures limiting the officer to document delivery duties only to maintain fairness. The commander assured the victim of justice, stating that guilt will be prosecuted according to evidence and there is no protection being offered.

PM Announces Major Crackdown on Transnational Crime, Identity Fraud, and Illegal Gambling—Warns Wrongdoers Have No Way Out

Thailand's government launched a major crackdown on transnational crime networks, identity fraud, and illegal gambling, with Deputy PM Anutin warning that wrongdoers cannot escape consequences as law enforcement agencies pursue cases to com

30 Apr Khaosod

At 3:00 PM on April 30, 2025, at Phakdibodindra Building in Government House, Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and the Interior Minister held a press conference announcing results of operations against transnational criminal networks, identity fraud, citizenship manipulation, and illegal gambling operations. They confirmed that all agencies have continuously intensified crackdowns on criminal networks, including scammer rings, with numerous cases resulting in asset seizures and confiscations.

Today's announcement detailed additional enforcement achievements, particularly regarding corruption in civil registration and citizenship matters. The Interior Ministry has dismantled call center and scammer networks, including operations run by individuals known as Gak Arn and Liang Pad. After discovering these transnational criminal networks through registration records, the Department of Local Administration established a task force against registry security threats. With cooperation from law enforcement agencies enforcing laws strictly, prosecution efforts have expanded to network members, resulting in continuous arrests and crackdowns.

The Prime Minister stated these criminal operations are interconnected, not separate, and linked as a single group—primarily scammers, money launderers, smugglers, and illegal gambling operators working together. Key enforcement agencies involved include the Department of Local Administration, the Department of Special Investigation (DSI), the Royal Thai Police, the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), the Office of the Ombudsman (OPO), the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO), and the military.

The PM emphasized that his teams will pursue influential, wealthy, and powerful individuals without regard to reputation, following the principle of "focus on actions, not names." He stated he continuously monitors operations, does not rely on single sources, and ensures thorough verification. Law enforcement agencies fully support this approach and operate without concern.

The PM noted he has personally observed numerous arrest operations and emphasized that when wrongdoers realize they cannot escape consequences, they proceed with full enforcement until cases are concluded. He urged the public to be confident that the government is serious about combating all types of illegal activity.

Recent arrests have targeted illegal gambling operations hidden in hotels and businesses across provinces. The PM warned business owners—whether hotel, restaurant, or property owners—that allowing such operations on their premises makes them equally liable. Those with business licenses who support illegal activities face license revocation and prosecution, consequences not worth the initial investment.

Chiang Mai air quality improves as hotspots decline

Air quality in Chiang Mai is improving as wildfire hotspots decline, though the province has already exceeded its 2026 hotspot target through late April. Authorities are intensifying efforts and expect further improvement as the rainy seaso

30 Apr Khaosod

CHIANG MAI — 30 April 2026, Air quality in northern Thailand's Chiang Mai province is showing signs of improvement as the number of wildfire hotspots declines, officials said.

At a provincial meeting on wildfire and PM2.5 pollution mitigation held in Chiang Dao district, Vice Governor Siwakorn Buapong said efforts were being stepped up to accelerate pollution reduction plans at the local level.

Authorities reported that the VIIRS satellite system used to detect hotspots is temporarily unavailable, but data from the NOAA-20 satellite identified two hotspots on the morning of 30 April in Mae Wang and Omkoi districts. Cumulative figures from 1 January to 27 April showed 10,849 hotspots, already exceeding the province's target for 2026.

Despite this, air quality readings have gradually improved, with some monitoring stations reporting levels in the "green" category.

Weather forecasts for May indicate that the first half of the month will remain hot and humid, with frequent thunderstorms, before transitioning into the rainy season in the latter half, bringing lower temperatures and increased rainfall.

Authorities said law enforcement efforts against illegal burning between 1 January and 29 April resulted in 240 cases and 257 suspects. Offences included open burning in communities, forest law violations, roadside burning and breaches under national park, forest reserve and public health laws. Most cases have resulted in fines, with a small number forwarded for prosecution and others still under investigation.

The meeting also urged local administrative organisations to urgently submit integrated pollution reduction plans at subdistrict level, aligning with community strategies. These plans are to cover six key areas, including forest fire management, land and forest use, agricultural burning reduction, waste and carbon reduction, public health protection, and community participation, as part of Chiang Mai's 2026–2028 pollution control action plan.
