Bangkok Implements Systematic Urban Heat Management Program to Address Root Causes

Bangkok is launching a systematic urban heat management program to combat the intensifying urban heat island effect affecting public health and daily life. The city has identified 379 heat risk zones and implemented a four-level alert system based on heat index readings to inform residents and guide outdoor activity restrictions. Long-term solutions include mandatory green infrastructure requirements for new buildings, urban planning reforms to increase green space, and development of climate-responsive city design features.

30 Apr Khaosod

Bangkok enters its hot season from February through May each year, with climate change intensifying weather conditions and particularly exacerbating the urban heat island effect, which impacts public health, daily life, and livelihoods. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is implementing a comprehensive heat management strategy for both short and long-term solutions under the oversight of a dedicated heat management committee to protect residents' quality of life. The city has identified 379 heat risk zones across Bangkok, mostly in open areas with high population density and shared public spaces such as construction sites, motorcycle taxi stands, parks, outdoor sports facilities, markets, and densely populated communities.

Short-term measures include monitoring and early warning systems. Bangkok closely tracks heat conditions using the Heat Index, which reflects the temperature the human body actually perceives based on the relationship between temperature and relative humidity. When humidity is high, the body cannot cool itself effectively through sweating, making conditions feel hotter than they are and increasing health risks. The alert system uses four color-coded levels:

Green (Caution): Heat Index 27.0–32.9°C – Monitor information and maintain general health practices Yellow (Warning): Heat Index 33.0–41.9°C – Reduce outdoor activity duration Orange (Dangerous): Heat Index 42.0–51.9°C – Avoid outdoor activities; implement intensive protective measures if necessary Red (Extremely Dangerous): Heat Index above 52.0°C – Completely halt outdoor activities due to high risk of heat stroke

Alerts are disseminated through the AirBKK application, the Greener Bangkok website, the Bangkok PR website, Facebook, the Bangkok Air Quality Information Center, and smart traffic signs.

Long-term measures address root causes through urban restructuring and legal reforms to reduce future heat accumulation. These include integrating heat adaptation with urban planning; implementing mandatory permeable surface requirements for new buildings since 2013 to reduce urban heat islands; using FAR bonus incentives to promote green buildings and water retention areas; increasing green space and open areas in each land-use zone; promoting compact urban development with shade, pedestrian pathways, and climate-appropriate public transportation; creating green corridors through streets and canals via a comprehensive Bangkok master plan; developing heat-risk maps incorporating health vulnerability data; linking urban planning requirements with building control regulations to support climate-responsive design; and developing low-cost, no-regret cooling infrastructure such as reflective roofing systems.

Who's Responsible? Young Business Owner Sends Drone Package Worth 30,000 Baht, Courier Loses It in Transit Without Accountability

A young business owner in Lan Sak district lost a 34,500-baht drone package when a courier employee's motorcycle strap broke during delivery on April 27, leaving her responsible for refunding her customer. The courier company is investigati

30 Apr Khaosod

On April 30, 2569, a homeowner named Ms. Kanokwan (surname withheld), 31, filed a complaint after her drone package went missing during courier delivery on April 27 at approximately 11:55 AM. The package contained a DJI Air3s drone combo kit with a remote control, charger, three batteries, and filters valued at approximately 34,500 baht, with a shipping fee of 111 baht paid to a courier company in Lan Sak district.

After the courier employee picked up the package, they called to report that the parcel had fallen and been lost somewhere along the road between Rabam subdistrict and Lan Sak district. Ms. Kanokwan and her husband searched for three days without finding it. When they contacted the courier employee about compensation, the employee acknowledged responsibility but took no action over the following three days. This forced Ms. Kanokwan to refund her customer and file a complaint, as she cannot afford such losses. She is offering a reward to anyone who finds and returns the package.

When the reporter contacted the courier employee, Ms. Kosam (surname withheld) from Lan Sak district explained that another employee had picked up the package and handed it to her for further delivery. While transporting multiple parcels on her motorcycle, she noticed a securing strap had come loose. Upon stopping to check, she discovered the customer's package had already fallen and disappeared. She immediately called Ms. Kanokwan to report the incident without any intention of theft, but the loss occurred due to the strap breaking—an unforeseen accident. The courier company told her she alone would be held responsible since the package never reached their warehouse.

When the reporter visited the courier company, management stated they are investigating the matter and have referred it to their legal team to review what happened with the employee, as the error was directly caused by individual employee negligence.

Sophon Dismisses Romadon's Call to Establish Committee Overseeing Kamlasak Shooting Case, Says Investigation Faces No Obstacles

30 Apr Khaosod

During a parliamentary session on April 30, 2569 at the National Assembly, Romadon Panjor, a Pheu Thai party list MP, raised concerns about the shooting of Nakhon Si Thammarat MP Kamlasak Liwamoh, describing it as a significant case. Although progress has been made against the suspected perpetrator group, evidence over the past month has implicated state officials, the National Intelligence Agency, military units, locations, and vehicles, leading Romadon to question whether this was merely an attack on one MP or a broader threat to parliamentary institutions.

Romadon urged Parliament Speaker Sophon Saranom to establish a monitoring committee or mechanism to ensure the investigation proceeds impartially and that investigators maintain independence, arguing that any attack on MPs constitutes an attack on the most vital institution in democracy.

Sophon responded that while he was deeply concerned from the incident's onset and had personally spoken with and encouraged the affected MP, he believed the case is progressing well and should be left to the responsible agencies. He stated there are currently no obstacles impeding the work of relevant authorities, and that he has informed all related agencies to prioritize the security of all parliamentarians regardless of their province.

New York City Mayor Seeks Return of 'Koh-i-Noor' Diamond from King Charles III

New York City Mayor Sohran Mamdani expressed his intention to request that King Charles III return the famed Koh-i-Noor diamond to India during the British monarch's official state visit to the United States. The 105.6-carat diamond, seized by the British East India Company in the 19th century, has been part of the British crown jewels for nearly 176 years. India has repeatedly sought the return of the historically significant gem, which was previously held by Mughal emperors, Persian shahs, and Afghan emirs.

30 Apr Khaosod

New York City Mayor Sohran Mamdani said he would request that King Charles III, who is on an official state visit to the United States, return the 'Koh-i-Noor,' a diamond weighing 105.6 carats. "If I had a private conversation with His Majesty, I would ask him to return the Koh-i-Noor diamond," said Mamdani, an Indian-American, hours before the 9/11 memorial ceremony at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. King Charles later spoke with Mamdani at the ceremony, while Buckingham Palace declined to comment on the matter, and there is no confirmation of whether Mamdani formally requested the diamond's return. India has previously called multiple times for Britain to return the Koh-i-Noor. Historically, British colonial administrators presented the diamond to Queen Victoria in 1847, approximately 176 years ago. After the East India Company annexed the Punjab region in 1846 and seized the diamond from a deposed Indian leader, the Koh-i-Noor had previously been owned by the Mughal emperors of India, the Shah of Iran, the Emir of Afghanistan, and Sikh maharajas.

Rare Bryde's whale family thrills tourists off Krabi coast

A family of three Bryde's whales breached repeatedly near Koh Lanta in Mu Ko Lanta National Park, offering tourists a rare extended viewing that park officials say signals a healthier marine ecosystem.

30 Apr Khaosod

KRABI — On April 29, 2026, tourists were treated to a rare spectacle when a family of Bryde's whales surfaced and repeatedly leapt from the sea near Koh Lanta in southern Thailand.

A tour guide captured the moment on video, showing the elusive marine mammals breaching and playing at the surface for nearly one minute. The sighting occurred while traveling between Mu Ko Ha and Koh Rok within Mu Ko Lanta National Park in Krabi province.

The group consisted of three whales, believed to be a mother, father, and calf, swimming and jumping together to the delight of those aboard the boat. Observers noted that such clear and extended views are exceptionally rare. Typically, Bryde's whales are only spotted briefly, with just portions of their backs or heads breaking the surface.

Park officials stated that the appearance of the whales reflects the improving health of the marine ecosystem around Koh Lanta, indicating abundant food sources and favorable conditions for rare marine life.

Authorities encouraged tourists and the public to refrain from disturbing or harming marine animals, to keep the sea clean, and to follow national park regulations to ensure these species can continue to thrive sustainably.
