A sedan struck a fallen motorcyclist and dragged the body dozens of meters along the road in a tragic accident. On May 16, authorities reported that late the previous night, Deputy Lt. Somchai Muay Dee of the Tha Sala Police Station received a report of a motorcycle accident where a sedan had run over the rider at the curve in Thung area on the Nakhon-Tha Sala Road, Tha Sala District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. After being notified, officers coordinated with the Tha Sala Hospital emergency doctor and rescue personnel to investigate the scene. Upon arrival, they found the body of Kanpattana, known as "Bangnuk Pakphying," a well-respected figure in the Tha Sala cockfighting community and organizer of major cockfighting tournaments in the area. The body bore marks of being dragged dozens of meters along the road, with a blue Honda motorcycle overturned nearby and the sedan parked not far from the accident scene. Investigation determined that Kanpattana was riding the motorcycle at high speed when it lost control and fell into the middle of the road. The sedan traveling behind at high speed could not brake in time, struck the fallen rider, and dragged the body dozens of meters along the road, resulting in his death. Authorities have collected evidence and interviewed the sedan driver for further legal action.

Supchee Promotes Thai SELECT Restaurant in Cannes, Showcasing Thai Cuisine's Soft Power to the World

Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister visited a Michelin-starred Thai restaurant in Cannes to promote Thai cuisine as a soft power tool, reviewing operations and gathering market insights from European business owners.

3d ago Khaosod

Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Supchee Sutthamphan, accompanied by senior Commerce Ministry officials including Wuthijai Leevirapat (Permanent Secretary), Varawuth Somwangpresert (Ministry Inspector), and Prawit Silao-on (Deputy Director General of the International Trade Promotion Department), visited Tuk Tuk Thai, a one-star Thai SELECT-certified restaurant in Cannes, France. During the visit, the delegation reviewed the restaurant's operations and solicited business owners' recommendations on promoting Thai cuisine in the European market.

Tuk Tuk Thai stands as one of the most popular Thai restaurants among French residents, tourists, and expatriates, especially during the Cannes Film Festival when visitors from around the world flock to the city. Located on Rue Bivouac Napoléon in central Cannes, the restaurant serves authentic Thai cuisine in a warm, welcoming atmosphere decorated with Thai cultural elements including colors, photographs, and décor from Thailand.

The restaurant's menu features internationally recognized Thai dishes including pad Thai, tom yum shrimp, green curry chicken, and shrimp pad krapow, using high-quality local ingredients combined with authentic Thai spices and sauces imported from Thailand. The restaurant also accommodates dietary restrictions with vegetarian and vegan options, adjusting spice levels to suit customer preferences.

"The Ministry views Thai restaurants abroad as crucial mechanisms for building a positive image of Thailand and important tools for promoting Thai soft power on the world stage through the appeal of food, culture, and Thai hospitality. This helps create awareness and appreciation for Thai products and services internationally," a ministry statement said.

France currently hosts 37 Thai SELECT-certified restaurants, including one three-star establishment (L'Orchidée in Ensisheim) and 36 one-star restaurants scattered throughout Paris and major cities nationwide.

The revamped Thai SELECT program now features four certification levels: Thai SELECT Casual, Thai SELECT 1 Star, Thai SELECT 2 Star, and Thai SELECT 3 Star, covering establishments from casual to premium dining. The new framework strengthens evaluation criteria across five key areas: food taste and presentation, atmosphere and consumer experience, hygiene standards, chef expertise, and ingredient quality, using an orchid-shaped emblem to signify international standard Thai cuisine quality.

Interested parties can contact the International Trade Promotion Department, Ministry of Commerce, at 1169 or visit www.ditp.go.th for more information and international trading opportunities through THAITRADE.COM.

PM Anupong Orders Land Department to Escalate Crackdown on Nominee Land Holdings

Prime Minister Anupong has ordered Thailand's Land Department to crack down on foreigners using Thai nominees to illegally buy land, with provincial offices now intensifying inspections of high-risk transactions nationwide.

3d ago Khaosod

Prime Minister Anupong Paojinda has expressed concern over the growing issue of foreigners using Thai nationals as nominee landholders to circumvent restrictions on foreign land ownership. This practice has created anxiety among the public regarding land prices and access to property resources for Thai citizens. The PM has ordered the Land Department to elevate inspection and oversight measures for land transactions nationwide, aiming to prevent Thais from being used as fronts for foreign land purchases and to block exploitation of legal loopholes.

Following this directive, the Land Department has sent urgent instructions to provincial governors nationwide, requesting that land officials work closely with relevant agencies to strictly implement anti-nominee guidelines. The department is also launching public awareness campaigns to educate citizens about the dangers of nominee arrangements and encouraging reporting of suspected violations to authorities. All provincial land offices have been instructed to intensify monitoring and investigation of high-risk transactions, with particular attention to major economic zones, tourist destinations, and areas with significant foreign capital investment.

The Land Department confirmed it has been conducting ongoing investigations, including deep audits of fund sources, property ownership links, corporate shareholding structures, and suspicious behavioral patterns indicating nominee arrangements. When violations are suspected, immediate investigation and legal action follow. Specific scrutiny protocols include: (1) investigations when individuals or Thai-owned companies purchase land with cash payments exceeding 2 million baht or property valued above 5 million baht, with exceptions for legitimate inheritance; (2) careful examination of corporate entities with suspicious shareholding changes, capital increases, or unusual share transfers intended to circumvent foreign ownership restrictions; and (3) monthly audits of entities with foreign shareholders or directors, with quarterly reports to the Land Department. Clear evidence of violations will result in strict legal prosecution against both companies and individuals involved.

Cornered – When the Law Becomes the Problem!!

A survey of over 400 business executives found that 60% encountered bribery demands from government agencies, with ten agencies collecting fees exceeding 100,000 baht per transaction. The private sector's unprecedented public exposure revea

3d ago Khaosod

The issue exploded onto the social radar when a joint private sector committee from three institutions released survey findings based on direct business experience. The revelation that ten government agencies collected fees exceeding 100,000 baht per transaction—scaling down to tens of thousands—immediately grabbed headlines.

While the specific figures for each agency and which departments were involved can be found in general news reports, it's no surprise that the implicated agencies responded by insisting on their transparency and integrity. Yet this flies in the face of public confidence. When people see this news, they're not shocked or startled—these practices have become so routine in daily life they're almost normalized.

Still, fairness demands that without clear evidence or formal complaints, we must give people the benefit of the doubt. Certainly, there are good civil servants, but when individuals behave inappropriately, they deserve criticism and a tarnished reputation. What's striking is why the private sector—usually submissive to government agencies—suddenly has the courage to expose such widespread abuses. Perhaps they've simply reached their breaking point.

When the economy is struggling and other costs are rising while under-the-table payments remain constant, business owners are trapped between a rock and a hard place. Fight back and face retaliation, or stay silent and wait for ruin.

The survey revealed other compelling findings. Among 401 business executives and private sector representatives surveyed, 60.9% encountered bribery demands when filing the most recent permit applications with government agencies. Nearly half had paid money, gifts, or other benefits to secure expedited processing.

The root cause? Laws that grant government agencies excessive discretionary power. Laws meant to create societal fairness have become tools for corruption and misconduct—truly darkly absurd. Critically, no one dares file complaints because they don't trust transparent investigations or fear the agency will make their work even harder. This is the reality playing out, whether anyone admits it or not.

Investigation Deepens into Unauthorized School Where Teacher Allegedly Seized Student's Phone and Demanded Ransom; Officials Warn of Legal Action Against Illegal Educational Facilities.

On May 16, 2569, Montol Phaksuwannakul, Secretary-General of the Private Education Commission (PEC), addressed the case of a 17-year-old student whose mobile phone was confiscated and held for ransom—a case currently trending on social media.

The Ministry of Education, led by Education Minister Prasert Chantharavung, expressed concern about the incident and ordered the Private Education Commission (PEC) to conduct an urgent investigation.

The investigation revealed that the facility is not licensed to operate as a private school under the PEC and has no record of authorization as a learning center in the Basic Education Commission (BEC) database. However, if the investigation confirms the facility is operating as an unlicensed private educational institution without PEC approval, legal action will be taken.

Authorities emphasized that all forms of educational management must prioritize student safety, rights, and dignity. Parents are urged to verify a school's official status before enrolling their children. Anyone discovering potentially unlicensed educational facilities can report tips to the Education Ministry hotline at 1579 or via email at saraban@opec.go.th, the PEC Secretary-General concluded.

'Lisa' Points Out 'Anutin' Listened to Capitalists' Problems—But He'd Go Deaf to People's Suffering, Criticizing PM's Words as Sounding Like a Wealthy Businessman's Lackey

Pheu Thai MP Phakamon Hunnanon criticized PM Anutin for meeting with 35 business executives while ignoring grassroots citizens' struggles, accusing him of favoring wealthy capitalists over farmers, fishers, and southern residents opposed to

3d ago Khaosod

Phakamon Hunnanon, a Pheu Thai party list MP and party spokesperson, criticized Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul for convening a meeting with 35 business executives at Government House while showing apparent indifference to grassroots citizens' problems. While acknowledging that consulting with business leaders during economic hardship is necessary, Hunnanon stressed the government should not show favoritism, as ordinary people are ultimately the first to suffer from economic crises. She pointed out the stark contrast between the PM's welcoming demeanor toward wealthy capitalists and his failure to similarly engage with fishing communities, farmers, motorcycle taxi drivers, and southern residents opposing the Land Bridge project. Hunnanon called for balanced engagement, saying the government must make people feel it stands beside them, not just beside business interests. She criticized the selective listening and unequal access, noting that when capitalists present problems the PM listens with open ears, but when ordinary people face genuine hardship, they meet deaf ears. She urged the prime minister to open Government House to suffering citizens as he did for tycoons and to show genuine concern for grassroots people rather than treating them as second-class stakeholders in national problem-solving.

Papaya Salad Vendor Distressed After Gold Bracelet Switched for Fake

A Ratchaburi papaya salad vendor lost her 3-baht gold bracelet to a fake after pawning it with a friend in January; she recovered it in May only to discover the genuine bracelet had been switched for counterfeit gold.

3d ago Khaosod

A Ratchaburi papaya salad vendor has come forward claiming she was duped when her 3-baht gold bracelet was switched for fake gold after pawning it with a close friend. The vendor, Ms. Rattikar Yamwong (known as "Khun Khaning"), 28, posted a plea for help on Facebook, explaining that she had saved money from selling papaya salad to purchase the gold bracelet but was forced to pawn it for 15,000 baht in January 2025 due to financial hardship. Her friend agreed to lend the money without charging interest.

On May 14, Ms. Rattikar returned the remaining balance of 20,000 baht and sent her boyfriend to collect the bracelet. During the exchange, her friend mentioned that a phone Ms. Rattikar had lost earlier was actually in his bag but he was afraid to return it. This raised her suspicions.

When Ms. Rattikar took the bracelet to the original gold shop for verification, staff confirmed it was counterfeit, despite having the same pattern as the original. She immediately filed a police report, but her friend instructed police to communicate through his lawyer instead.

Ms. Rattikar, speaking tearfully, said she simply wants her gold back, as it took countless days of hard work selling papaya salad under the sun to save for it, all while caring for her young child. She suspects her genuine bracelet was swapped with counterfeit gold of similar design.

She is now warning the public to use reputable gold shops or established businesses when pawning valuables, rather than lending to acquaintances. Those wishing to support her papaya salad and grilled chicken business can contact her Facebook page "Rattikar Yamwong," which also offers online ordering.

Editorial: Alcohol-Free Zones Across Thailand

Thailand's Alcohol Beverage Control Committee has established eight nationwide alcohol-free zones effective May 12, 2026, banning all alcoholic beverages in areas including public transport, parks, temples, and roads, with violators facing

3d ago Khaosod

The Royal Gazette has released eight announcements from the Alcohol Beverage Control Committee, effective May 12, 2026, establishing locations and areas where all types of alcoholic beverages are prohibited nationwide. The regulations enhance and expand the original 2008 law to align with current circumstances, defining eight comprehensive zones where alcohol sales and consumption are banned.

Violators face penalties under the 2551 Buddhist Era Alcohol Control Act, with sanctions ranging from minor to severe, including fines and imprisonment or both. Key prohibitions include selling alcohol on roads or in vehicles on roads, and consuming alcohol while driving or riding in vehicles. Sales and consumption are banned at public ports and on all public vessels to ensure water transportation safety, in public parks operated by state enterprises or government agencies, and at railway stations or trains—except designated special event areas in Bangkok's central station with proper authorization.

Alcohol prohibitions in temples and religious sites remain in full effect, with bans on both sales and consumption except as part of religious ceremonies. Violations carry penalties of up to six months imprisonment, fines up to 10,000 baht, or both. These regulations align with the fifth precept of Buddhist ethics, which advocates abstaining from intoxicants that cloud the mind and cause carelessness. Strict enforcement is necessary to maintain these areas as alcohol-free zones.

Search underway after man swept away at Phuket beach

3d ago Khaosod

PHUKET — 16 May 2026, Rescue workers in Phuket were searching for a man believed to have been swept out to sea by strong waves at Nai Thon Beach, authorities said.

The incident occurred at about 18:30 on 15 May at the beach in Thalang district during rough monsoon conditions, with waves reported to be more than 2 metres high.

Lifeguards attempted to rescue the man but were unable to reach him because of strong currents and heavy surf, officials said. The search was temporarily suspended at 19:00 before resuming the following morning.

Search teams including local officials, police, lifeguards and rescue foundation personnel later established a command centre at Nai Thon Beach.

Authorities said severe weather conditions continued on 16 May, preventing boats from conducting offshore searches. Rescue workers instead focused on searching rocky areas and stretches of shoreline.

An 18-year-old lifeguard who witnessed the incident said he spotted a man struggling beyond the surf zone while clearing tourists from the beach shortly before sunset. The lifeguard said he ran to retrieve rescue fins, but the man disappeared before he could return, apparently pulled away by strong currents in an area known for dangerous rip tides.

Officals believe the missing person is a Thai man in his 20s who had arrived at the beach alone. Authorities said red warning flags had been placed along the beach throughout the day to prohibit swimming because of hazardous monsoon conditions.

Police later discovered a silver Toyota Camry with Chiang Rai licence plates parked near the beach and believe it may belong to the missing man. The vehicle was taken to Sakhu police station as authorities attempted to identify and contact relatives.
