Ariyaloke the Sixth – Commemorating 104th Memorial of Luang Pho Patthan of Wat Huai Duan

Wat Huai Duan in Nakhon Sawan held a 104th memorial ceremony Tuesday honoring Luang Pho Patthan Punnyakamo, a revered Buddhist scholar and former abbot who passed away in 2566.

11 May Khaosod

On Tuesday, May 12, 2569, a 104th memorial commemoration was held for Phra Rajamongkolvachajarya, known as "Luang Pho Patthan Punnyakamo," the former abbot of Wat Huai Duan, a renowned Buddhist scholar from Nakhon Sawan.

He was a student of several respected monks: Luang Pho Doem of Wat Nong Po, Luang Pho In of Wat Hang Nam Sakorn, Luang Pho Muek of Wat Saratale, and Luang Pho Homod of Wat Kok Duea.

Born on May 12, 2465, as Patthan Kaonchantet in Ban Saratale village, Nakhon Sawan, his parents were Nai Putthorn and Nang Kaew (originally surnamed Fungsook). During his childhood in Ban Saratale, a severe drought struck the region, forcing his family to relocate to Ban Nong Noen and later to Ban Nong Luang in Tha Takob District. It was during this period that Luang Pho Doem was constructing Wat Nong Luang, and his father helped with the construction while young Patthan learned to read and write, memorized Buddhist incantations, studied Thai and Khmer languages, and practiced meditation under Luang Pho In.

At age 13, he returned to complete his fourth-grade education at Wat Saratale in Phayuhakhiri District, staying with Luang Muek, a student of Luang Pho Thet. During his studies at both Wat Nong Luang and Wat Saratale, he studied various Buddhist disciplines under Luang Pho Thet.

Upon reaching military age, he was conscripted into the armed forces. However, just as his service was concluding, World War II broke out in East Asia, extending his military service until age 24 when he was discharged in 2489.

He took monastic vows that same year (2489) at Wat Saratale's ordination hall, with Phra Thammatrailokacharya (Luang Pho Yot) of Wat Khao Kaew as his preceptor, Luang Pho Kan of Wat Khao Kaew as his instructor, and Phra Akhikarsilp of Wat Saratale as his witness.

He dedicated himself to studying Buddhist scriptures and texts, completing his second-level theological education. During this time, Luang Pho Doem was constructing buildings at Wat Intaram, so he also studied Buddhist traditions there. When meeting Luang Pho Doem at Wat Intaram, the senior monk transmitted various Buddhist practices to him, and Patthan spent nearly two rain-retreat periods studying at Wat Khao Kaew under Luang Pho Kan before completing his studies.

Later, his family relocated to Thanthaahan Subdistrict in Nong Bua District, where residents and village elders requested that he become the abbot of Wat Thanthaahan. He took up residence there beginning in 2513.

Wat Thanthaahan (Wat Huai Duan) was originally built in 2482 and named after the local stream called Huai Duan, which formed from a tributary of Huai Nam Saad Nuea and terminated there. The village was later renamed Ban Thanthaahan, a name that continues to this day.

He was considered a leading Buddhist scholar of Thailand, regularly invited to perform Buddhist consecration ceremonies for sacred amulets of various editions.

Luang Pho Patthan passed away peacefully on Friday, November 24, 2566, at Bangkok Hospital at the age of 101 in his 77th monastic year.

Fresh from the Temple Gate – Families Carry Merit Baskets and Make Alms Offerings at the Bridge of Merit, Welcoming the Dawn of Sukhothai

The Department of Religious Affairs organized a merit-making activity called "Bridge of Merit Alms Offering, Welcoming Sukhothai's Dawn" at Wat Traphang Thong on May 3, 2026, bringing families and tourists together to participate in Buddhist traditions. The program, which drew approximately 58,000 participants nationwide in the previous year, promotes local culture, traditional crafts, and community products while generating economic benefits for surrounding communities. The event exemplifies how religious and cultural practices can boost local tourism and preserve traditional heritage while supporting spiritual development.

11 May Khaosod

On Sunday, May 3, 2026, the Department of Religious Affairs under the Ministry of Culture, in cooperation with Sukhothai Province through the Sukhothai Provincial Cultural Office, organized a temple merit practice activity called "Family Merit Basket Day, Faith-Filled Merit, Community Support – Bridge of Merit Alms Offering, Welcoming Sukhothai's Dawn" at Wat Traphang Thong's merit bridge in Sukhothai Province. Venerable Phra Maha Damrung Santhajitto, abbot of Wat Traphang Thong, served as head of the monastic side, while Mr. Chaiyapol Sukhiem, Director-General of the Department of Religious Affairs, headed the lay participants. They were joined by Mr. Theeriyuth Samrarnthrup, Deputy Governor of Sukhothai Province, Ms. Thitiya Chaneiam, Sukhothai Cultural Officer, Ms. Thitima Subphak, Director of Religious Support Division, government officials, and the general public.

The Department of Religious Affairs successfully implemented this merit-making program in fiscal year 2568, with approximately 58,000 Buddhist participants joining nationwide. The initiative received strong support from Buddhist tourists who brought their families to temples for merit-making and supported community products at various checkpoints. This effort has revitalized local traditions, regional costumes, and cuisine in each province, creating a cultural tourism asset that generates income for communities, homestays, and hotels, while fostering local wisdom and cultural capital.

The program stimulates economic circulation within communities, creating income through food, clothing, souvenirs, homestays, hotels, and tourism routes. It also promotes local expertise and encourages Buddhist devotees to make merit offerings, observe precepts, and practice meditation beyond just the merit practice days.

Activities at Wat Traphang Thong included paying respects to "Luang Pho Khao" Buddha image in the ubosot, gilding Buddha footprints from the Sukhothai period (1092 B.E.), planting trees for National Tree Day, participating in temple merit practice, visiting local virtue products market, learning centers for creating fish traps, and wood carving demonstrations in Sukhothai Nakhon 3 community.

The "Bridge of Merit Alms Offering at Sukhothai's Dawn" at Wat Traphang Thong is a long-standing tradition where the temple provides space and baskets for devotees to leave offerings each morning. Monks process gracefully across the bridge to receive alms in a practice reflecting the cultural and religious traditions dating back to Sukhothai's reign as capital. Today, it attracts tourists seeking to make merit and receive blessings, aligning with Sukhothai's meaning: "the dawn of happiness."

Near Wat Traphang Thong, a fresh market operates selling local snacks, savory and sweet dishes, flower garlands for worship, traditional clothing, jewelry, and souvenirs for both devotees and tourists.

Strong Response! Anutin Delivers Message to Sirikanya After Emergency Decree for 400 Billion Baht Drawn Up on Just 5 Pages

Prime Minister Anutin Charansanitwong defended the government's 400 billion baht emergency borrowing decree, dismissing opposition criticism from Democrat Party and People's Party figures. Anutin argued the government must prioritize solving citizens' problems and stimulating the economy, while taking a jab at critics by distinguishing between those with actual work experience and those without.

11 May Khaosod

Prime Minister Anutin Charansanitwong held a press conference at Government House on May 11, 2025, responding to Democrat Party Deputy Leader Korn Chatikavanij's concerns that the 400 billion baht emergency decree could compromise fiscal discipline. Anutin said it's natural for opposition members to think that way, but as the ruling government, his administration must urgently solve public problems and boost the economy.

When asked about comparisons between the Thai Strong program and the Thai Help Plus program, Anutin said both share the same intention of improving the economy, and he urged people not to compare them as it creates conflict. He assured that the Thai Help Plus program will quickly resolve public hardship while stimulating economic growth.

When asked whether the government should listen to Korn as a politically experienced voice, Anutin responded that the government already listens to all inputs because everyone has political experience and work success to their credit. He urged people not to use experience as a tool for intimidation or comparison.

Regarding People's Party Deputy Leader Sirikanya Tansakul's comment that the government allocated 400 billion baht but used only 5 pages of paper, Anutin called this efficiency and remarked that there's a clear difference between people with actual work experience and those who merely talk without having done the work.

Special Report – Nakhon Ratchasima's Songkran Festival: The Grand Procession of Phra Kan Thar Raad

Former Deputy Prime Minister Suwat Liptapallop led a grand Songkran ceremony in Nakhon Ratchasima on April 13, 2026, presiding over the traditional procession of Phra Kan Thar Raad Buddha image through Chomphon Gate with thousands of residents and tourists. The revival of this centuries-old tradition, which had been dormant since 1979, aims to bring spiritual comfort to Thais facing economic challenges and celebrates the city's cultural heritage. The ceremony is part of the broader Korat Grand Songkran Festival 2026, featuring water activities, traditional performances, and complimentary Thai sweets for all participants.

11 May Khaosod

On Monday, April 13, 2026, coinciding with Songkran, former Deputy Prime Minister Suwat Liptapallop presided over a ceremony to invite Phra Kan Thar Raad, performing ritual water blessings and opening sacred water-sprinkling ceremonies at nine temples consecrated by renowned monks. The event was held at the Thao Suranari Monument in Muang District, Nakhon Ratchasima, aiming to provide spiritual encouragement to the Thai people during economic hardship.

Former Education Minister Thewanya Liptapallop, Nakhon Ratchasima Governor Anupong Sukhsamnit, Nakhon Ratchasima Mayor Dr. Wanrat Chaynugul, and numerous government officials and residents participated in the ceremonial procession through Chomphon Gate. Thousands of tourists carried 558-meter-long silver and gold silk cloths representing the age of Nakhon Ratchasima, walking approximately 800 meters along Chomphol Road to Phra Naruesan Maharaj Worawihan Temple (City Temple) before the Buddha image was ceremonially enshrined. Suwat and his group distributed traditional sweet rice noodles to attendees.

Dr. Wanrat revealed that Phra Kan Thar Raad is an ancient Buddha image from Phra Naruesan Temple, created on September 8, 1921, by Phraya Nakhon Racha Seni (Sahat Singhseni), the 11th Lord of Nakhon Ratchasima. The statue measures 39 inches across the chest and stands approximately 1.3 meters tall, depicted in a seated meditation posture with the right hand raised in a welcoming gesture and the left hand positioned to receive water. The image procession through Chomphon Gate during Songkran began when the temple was completed, continuing until 1979 when the tradition ceased. In 2016, after the temple's restoration and renovation, the ceremony was revived following the discovery of several ancient Buddha images beneath the main altar. The procession through Chomphon Gate is considered a distinctive cultural tradition of Nakhon Ratchasima.

Nakhon Ratchasima Municipality organized the "Korat Grand Songkran Festival 2026" under the concept "Full of Fun, Water Play at Its Best, and Free Sweet Rice Noodles Throughout the City." An 80-meter bubble water tunnel was installed on Rajdamnoen Road, allowing tourists to enjoy traditional water splashing and participate in performances by renowned artists, including classic folk dancing that celebrates local Songkran traditions. The festival skillfully combined festive energy while preserving the traditions and cultural heritage of the Thai New Year, reflecting Nakhon Ratchasima's cultural wisdom. All measures were implemented to ensure public safety, facilitate traffic flow, and organize water play areas for everyone to enjoy safely.

Diverse Discoveries – Thailand's 'Synchrotron' Unlocks the Secrets of Scorpion Legs

International researchers used Thailand's Siam Photon Source synchrotron to examine scorpion leg structures, uncovering how insects perceive movement and sound through specialized sensory organs in their legs.

11 May Khaosod

International researchers have used synchrotron light from the Siam Photon Source in Nakhon Ratchasima to examine the internal structures of scorpion legs, seeking to understand how insects perceive movement through specialized organs related to hearing, motion, and reproduction.

This work reflects Thailand's position as a nation with world-class advanced scientific infrastructure ready to support international research and enable new scientific discoveries.

According to the Synchrotron Light Research Institute, synchrotron light is a unique type of electromagnetic radiation with extraordinary properties. It is approximately one million times brighter than sunlight, produces beams as small as micrometers (one millionth of a meter), and spans four wavelength ranges including infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, and X-rays.

Thailand operates the largest synchrotron light source in Southeast Asia. An international research team from Thailand, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and the United States studied scorpion leg samples using synchrotron light techniques at the Synchrotron Light Research Institute in Nakhon Ratchasima province, employing high-resolution X-ray tomography to create detailed three-dimensional images.

Dr. Atitep Chaiysitti, a researcher from the University of Leicester and visiting scholar at Mahidol University's Center for Vector and Vector-Borne Disease Research, leads the project funded by the Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP). The research team used synchrotron imaging to study the Femoral Chordotonal Organ (FeCO)—a mechanoreceptor organ that insects use to perceive stimuli related to hearing, movement, and reproduction.

"Our team shares a common interest in mechanical perception in insects, particularly how mechanical stimuli are converted into electrical nerve signals," Dr. Atitep explained. "Chordotonal organs contain nerve cells with dendrites arranged in line-like patterns. The hypothesis is that these organs are stimulated when dendrites receive mechanical stretch. We're investigating how such a simple mechanism enables the organ to perform diverse functions ranging from hearing to cellular-level stretch detection."

The research aims to understand how scorpions perceive the degree of leg flexion through the FeCO organ.
