National Police Chief Orders Strict Enforcement at Railway Crossings, Calls Meeting with Police Nationwide on May 26
Thailand's national police chief is imposing strict enforcement at railway crossings and has called a nationwide meeting for May 26 to address traffic violations and congestion issues affecting police-controlled intersections.
At 11:10 a.m. on May 21, 2025, at Government House, National Police Chief Pol. Gen. Kittarat Panpetch announced strict enforcement measures at railway crossings, instructing traffic police to establish discipline and ensure compliance with traffic regulations. Any violations will result in legal enforcement. On May 26, the chief will convene all Bangkok Metropolitan Police station commanders overseeing railway-adjacent areas and conduct a video conference with provincial police commanders and station commanders nationwide to address three urgent matters.
When asked about observations that police officers have failed to operate traffic signals effectively to manage congestion, the national police chief acknowledged the interconnected nature of the problem. He noted that vehicle traffic volume has increased while road capacity remains unchanged, and ongoing construction projects, including elevated train development, have exacerbated congestion. Traffic police and senior administrators must collaborate on tools and mechanisms to improve traffic flow and better coordinate traffic signals. However, he conceded that these issues cannot be resolved in one or two days and will require sustained effort, though authorities will work at full capacity to address them.
