A 21-year-old Belgian tourist was arrested at Phuket International Airport on July 7, 2025, after authorities discovered cannabis hidden in two pieces of luggage as she prepared to board an international flight. Officers at the international departures terminal inspected two suspicious bags—one green-and-white and one black—belonging to the young tourist, and found 12 packages of vacuum-sealed cannabis buds totaling 28.3 kilograms, plus 8 packages of processed cannabis weighing 3.4 kilograms, for a total of approximately 31.7 kilograms.

The suspect initially admitted that the luggage and all contraband belonged to her. She now faces charges for attempting to export undeclared goods in violation of the Customs Act of 2017, as well as violations of the Narcotics Control Laws, the Traditional Thai Medicine Act of 1999, and a 2025 Public Health Ministry announcement regarding controlled botanical substances including cannabis. Officers transferred her and the seized materials to Saku Police Station for further legal proceedings.

Police Colonel Slan Santhisatsanangu, commander of Saku Police Station, stated that this case resulted from integrated cooperation between security and customs agencies in conducting strict passenger and baggage inspections at Phuket International Airport to prevent smuggling of illegal items out of the country. He emphasized that all offenders will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Cabinet Approves 6.6 Billion Baht Bridge Projects for Ko Lanta
3h ago Khaosod

Deputy Transport Minister Sompetch Bunyamani announced on July 7, 2569 at Thai Proud Party headquarters that the Cabinet has approved two major infrastructure projects for Southern Thailand: a bridge connecting Ko Lanta and a bridge spanning Songkhla Lake. The Ko Lanta bridge project will connect Ko Klang and Ko Lanta Noi subdistricts in Ko Lanta District, Krabi Province, while the Songkhla Lake bridge will link Krasan District in Songkhla Province with Khao Chai Son District in Phatthalung Province.

The Ko Lanta bridge spans 2.2 kilometers with a budget of approximately 1.8 billion baht. Construction is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2569 at the latest by year-end, with completion projected within three years. Upon completion, the bridge will not only connect the mainland to the island but will also reduce traffic congestion, improve road safety, and shorten travel times while elevating transportation standards to support Krabi's future tourism development.

The Songkhla Lake bridge spans 7 kilometers with a budget of 4.8 billion baht, with construction contracts expected to be signed by year-end and a three-year completion timeline. This project will enhance tourism around Songkhla Lake and connect the east and west coasts while reducing transportation costs for business operators. Travel time from Phatthalung to Songkhla Province will be reduced from over two hours for 80 kilometers to just 15 minutes.

Environmental protection remains a priority, with the Cabinet allocating 402 million baht for establishing an Irrawaddy dolphin conservation center. Thailand's remaining population of these dolphins, the world's fifth-largest group, currently numbers approximately 14-15 individuals.

On July 7, 2025, a heartbreaking incident involving a 63-year-old disabled man struggling to make an honest living came to light when a lottery vendor was robbed. Reporters met with Tanasart, 63, a disabled lottery seller who operates from a wheelchair inside a gas station in Bang Pla subdistrict, Bang Phli district, Samut Prakan province.

Tanasart recounted the incident, which occurred at midday while he was selling lottery tickets at a gas station in the Kling Kaew area of Racha Thewa subdistrict, Bang Phli district, Samut Prakan. A man, approximately 20-30 years old, about 155-160 centimeters tall, wearing a black motorcycle helmet, long-sleeved white collared shirt, black pants, and closed-toe canvas shoes, pretended to purchase government lottery tickets.

The man selected 36 tickets (18 pairs of two-ticket bundles and 2 five-ticket bundles for a total of 46 tickets), then claimed he needed to get money from his motorcycle to pay. He walked to his bike and rode away with the tickets.

Tanasart is in severe distress because he works as an agent selling these tickets and bears full financial responsibility for them. He pleaded with the perpetrator to return all the tickets and has already filed a report with Bang Kaew police station. Preliminary investigation indicates police are pursuing leads through CCTV footage along the escape route and expect an arrest soon.

Thailand Cuts Fuel Prices by Up to 2.56 Baht Per Liter

Thailand's Fuel Fund Management Committee approved price cuts for all fuel types effective July 8, with diesel dropping by up to 2.56 baht per liter following global oil market weakening and eased Middle East tensions.

Thailand Cuts Fuel Prices by Up to 2.56 Baht Per Liter
3h ago Khaosod

Thailand's Fuel Fund Management Committee (OFOC) has approved price cuts for all fuel types effective July 8, 2025, following directives from the Cabinet meeting on July 7. Diesel B7 and B20 prices drop by 2.56 baht per liter, while gasoline and gasohol prices decrease by 2.51 baht per liter, supporting economic and industrial development.

The price reduction reflects weakening global oil market trends after investors eased concerns about Middle East tensions, particularly following positive progress in negotiations and the reopening of energy shipping routes through the Hormuz Strait. Global oil prices as of July 7 stood at approximately 118 USD per barrel for diesel and 97 USD per barrel for gasoline.

For diesel fuels, the fund increased compensation for B7 to 2.90 baht per liter, resulting in a retail price of 34.94 baht per liter, while B20 compensation rose to 8.46 baht per liter at a retail price of 29.94 baht per liter. Premium diesel carries a collection rate of 1.50 baht per liter.

For gasoline and gasohol products, collection rates were reduced to 7.99 baht per liter for 95 octane gasoline (43.93 baht retail), 0.42 baht per liter for Gasohol 95 (34.94 baht retail), and 0.42 baht per liter for Gasohol 91 (34.57 baht retail). E20 gasohol received increased compensation of 3.71 baht per liter (29.94 baht retail), while E85 gasohol compensation rose to 4.65 baht per liter (25.88 baht retail).

These adjustments immediately reduce living costs for citizens while improving industrial sector operations. The fuel fund will absorb approximately 213.91 million baht in net daily expenses.

Energy Minister Eknath Prom-On, chair of the Energy Policy Committee, confirmed the Cabinet's directive to reduce fuel prices as much as possible in line with declining global crude oil prices. The committee invoked emergency fuel shortage legislation and approved a retail price ceiling not exceeding 35 baht per liter for gasohol and fast-spinning diesel, delegating rate adjustments to the Fuel Fund Management Committee.

Awards Organizer Disputes Coordinator's Wage Claim
3h ago Khaosod

On July 7, 2025, the Thailand Headlines Person of the Year 2025 organizing committee issued a clarification statement regarding payment disputes with an event coordinator. The company said it is addressing misinformation circulating on social media that could damage its reputation and credibility.

The organizers confirmed this is the ninth consecutive year of the awards and stated they have consistently fulfilled their obligations to coordinators, business partners, and contractors with transparency and good governance. Over nine years of events, they said they have never defaulted on or avoided payments to coordinators according to agreements.

However, the company identified several performance issues with the coordinator. Most critically, the live-streaming system—a core element of the event—experienced interruptions during the broadcast, disrupting audience communication and coordination with domestic and international partners. The coordinator also failed to provide the agreed-upon workforce, forcing the company to deploy nearly 50 of its own staff members to support operations, which compromised customer service and participant care.

After the event, the company received complaints from clients and partners about service quality. It documented additional operational deficiencies in multiple areas and collected comprehensive evidence for review. These failures caused significant impact on project execution, the company's reputation, client confidence, and generated substantial additional costs for remediation, alternative operations, and damage mitigation.

Because of these issues, the company determined the project requires further verification against the coordinator agreement terms. Final project acceptance and payment authorization remain pending according to internal procedures.

Young Dugong Dies After Stranding; Autopsy Ordered

A young dugong calf found stranded in Ranong Province died despite intensive veterinary care at a rescue center in Phuket; an autopsy is underway to determine the cause and improve future marine animal rescue efforts.

Young Dugong Dies After Stranding; Autopsy Ordered
3h ago Khaosod

Thailand's Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchat Chamlong has ordered an urgent autopsy to determine the cause of death of a young male dugong that became separated from its pod and died during treatment. Despite full efforts by marine veterinarians and staff from the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, the calf could not be saved. Minister Chamlong emphasized the need to accelerate efforts to improve conservation and rescue of rare marine animals in the future.

Dr. Pinsak Suraswadi, director of the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, revealed that on July 5, 2569 (2026), a 112-centimeter-long, 25-kilogram male dugong calf was found stranded at Laem Phromthep beach in Ranong Province. Local residents helped rescue the animal and brought it to officials at Laem Phromthep National Park. Initial examination showed small wounds on the body and head, believed to have been caused by the stranding and being swept ashore by currents. Staff provided immediate first aid and transferred the calf to the Sirinath rare marine animal rescue center operated by the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources in Phuket.

Throughout the treatment period, staff from the Sirinath rescue center and the Upper Andaman Sea Research Center worked around the clock with volunteers to monitor and care for the calf 24 hours a day. Health assessments showed the calf was in normal condition but underweight (body condition score 2.5 out of 5), with bruising along the body from the stranding. Heart rate averaged 80-100 beats per minute depending on behavior, while breathing rates were 1-3 times per 5 minutes at rest and 4-5 times per 5 minutes while swimming. Tests revealed low blood sugar and moderate to severe dehydration. The calf's digestive system showed severe bloating with gas buildup, as it had not eaten for an extended period.

Despite the veterinary team's best efforts, the calf went into shock. Though emergency resuscitation and stimulant medications were administered, the young dugong could not be saved and died shortly after. An autopsy is currently being conducted to determine the exact cause of death. The findings will be used to develop better knowledge and protocols for assisting rare marine animals to improve survival chances in future rescue cases. Thailand will continue implementing measures to conserve and restore the national dugong population.

3h ago Khaosod

A 34-year-old woman from Thamakha district in Kanchanaburi was forcibly taken in a car heading south and assaulted throughout the journey before finding an opportunity to escape and seek help from a gas station attendant to call police in Ranong. The suspect initially fled but was arrested on July 7, 2569 by Phuket police investigators after he boarded a tour bus. He was handed over to Ranong Municipal Police for prosecution.

At 11:00 AM, Pol. Lt. Col. Thanawat Wattanakul, commander of Ranong Provincial Police, along with Pol. Maj. Thawatchai Suncharoen, superintendent of Ranong Municipal Police, and Pol. Capt. Chakraphan Kaewkhao, deputy superintendent, interrogated suspect Nattapong, 40, who was arrested under court warrant from Ranong Provincial Court.

The charges include robbery with threats to kill or cause bodily harm, coercion, unlawful confinement, indecent assault with threats or force, assault, and damage to property. Investigators reported that upon arrest, the suspect showed signs of drug intoxication. A urine test confirmed methamphetamine in his system. During interrogation, he gave contradictory statements, claiming to have Chinese and Korean nationality and alleging he received money transfers from Korea that were misappropriated by others. He claimed he acted out of accumulated frustration, admitted to slapping the victim, and blamed police for not also arresting the woman.

The Ranong Provincial Police Commander noted the suspect displayed signs of mental disturbance consistent with drug abuse, likely leading to paranoid and violent thoughts. The suspect confessed to hitting the woman, but the victim's quick thinking enabled her escape. The case is notable for the victim's resourcefulness in flagging down a gas station attendant to call her mother and alert police. The four-finger salute gesture she used to signal for help while making the call has been recognized as an important symbol requesting assistance.

At 1:00 PM on July 7, 2025, Deputy Superintendent Chaloemporn Yuenyong of Bangyai Police Station in Nonthaburi received a report of an armed robbery at Bangyai Market, where a man wielding a knife had snatched a vegetable vendor's shoulder bag. Good Samaritans quickly apprehended the suspect before police arrived. Officers, including Police Captain Siraphop Anusiri and other personnel from the station's investigation unit, found 39-year-old Kriang Kai detained by citizens. The suspect showed visible injuries to his head and face from the struggle during his capture. The victim, a vegetable shop owner, provided a statement to police.

A good Samaritan witness explained that while shopping, he witnessed the robbery and immediately chased down the perpetrator to help apprehend him. He expressed concern about the brazenness of the crime, noting it occurred during busy market hours when many vendors and customers were present. He urged shoppers to be more cautious and vigilant about their belongings.

Deputy Police Lieutenant Rachane Thanadpatchanamas reported that police received the initial report from the public and the suspect confessed to the crime. The man admitted he was intoxicated from clear liquor and, lacking employment, was seized by greed when he spotted the victim's valuable bag. Police urged residents to exercise heightened caution regarding their valuables and to report any suspicious incidents to the local police station immediately or call the emergency hotline 191 available 24 hours daily.
