Police were startled to discover a large cache of explosives and firearms during a search of a Chinese national's residence following up on a vehicle rollover case. The suspect claims the weapons came from Rayong and were intended for self-harm, though police remain skeptical and are conducting detailed interrogations.

At 6:00 PM on May 8, 2025, Deputy Commander Ponpan Wongmanesetwat of Chonburi Provincial Police, along with investigation officers from Chonburi Province, Chonburi Forensic Unit, Na Jomtien and Huai Yai Police Stations, conducted a search of a residential property in Soi 2, Huai Yai Subdistrict, Bang Lamung District, Chonburi Province. The operation was initiated following a report from Na Jomtien Police Station about a car rollover in their jurisdiction involving a foreign driver. The suspect was identified as Ming Chen Sun, 31 years old, holding a Chinese passport and a pink Thai ID card, along with a Taiwanese woman. Military weapons were discovered in the vehicle during the initial search.

The search of the residence yielded shocking discoveries, including 4 C-4 explosives weighing 8 pounds, modified K-75 explosives, M16 firearms, 5.56mm ammunition marked LOT RTA (manufactured by the Royal Thai Army Ammunition Plant for military use), and other weapons. Mobile phone footage revealed shooting practice clips and explosive training sessions with Cambodian soldiers.

After the discovery of the large weapons cache, police cordoned off the area around the house to a 100-meter radius and called in the EOD unit to recover the explosives found inside.

During initial questioning, Ming Chen Sun stated that he previously operated a liquor shop in Cambodia but relocated to Thailand following border issues. He claimed to have purchased the weapons through a LINE group in Rayong province but could not specify the exact location. He stated his intention was to use the explosives for self-harm due to depression.

Udon Thani Governor Orders Swift Resolution to Ban Kaeng Krachan Conflict, Merges Two Groups to End Dispute

The Udon Thani Governor has ordered the immediate resolution of a dispute between two community groups in Ban Noen Muang over ban sai (traditional sticky rice baskets) sales territory at Kham Chao Nod Island. After four hours of mediation, officials merged both groups into a single enterprise with all 409 local households as members, resolving the conflict that had disrupted tourism and the sacred site's reputation. The unified group will be led by the former village headman with equal representation from both original groups on its board.

8 May Khaosod

A conflict erupted on May 7 near Kham Chao Nod Island in Ban Dung District, Udon Thani Province, when two community groups clashed fiercely over sales territory for ban sai in front of tourists, damaging the sacred site's image. The village headman temporarily closed the area to contain the dispute. Today, Governor Rachun Sun Hua assigned officials including Wijian Daeng Dharma Center Director Prajchai Pathumchomphu to mediate negotiations between the two groups. After more than four hours of intense discussion, officials reached an agreement to merge both groups into one enterprise under the leadership of Aruanya Saenkua, the village headman, while incorporating all 409 households as members. The new unified group will maintain Wichian Saensuk, the former village headman, as its director, with a 10-member board split equally between representatives from each former group. Despite initial concerns from some residents, a subsequent meeting at the community hall resolved remaining doubts. Village Headman Aruanya Saenkua confirmed the resolution, stating that the community will now operate as one entity to sell ban sai to tourists transparently. Officials emphasized that Governor Rachun was concerned about the dispute's impact on tourism, noting that Kham Chao Nod is vital to the region's tourism sector.

An 8-year-old boy was mauled by a pack of roughly 20 stray dogs while riding an electric motorcycle through a Nakhon Ratchasima community, prompting residents to demand urgent action against the area's dangerous stray dog population.

8 May Khaosod

A pack of approximately 20 stray dogs attacked an 8-year-old boy in Khlong Soi Mun Mon community, Khlong Phai Subdistrict, Si Khit District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province on May 8, 2026. The incident was documented on CCTV and occurred when the child was riding an electric motorcycle through an intersection within the community before being swarmed and mauled by the dogs, causing injuries that shocked residents in the area.

Following the attack, relatives rushed the boy to the hospital for wound treatment and rabies vaccination. The child is now experiencing fear and refuses to travel through the area again due to the large population of stray dogs inhabiting the neighborhood.

The Khlong Phai Municipal Administration has recently launched field inspections of homes keeping dogs in the area to develop action plans and prevent future incidents. Local residents are calling on relevant authorities to urgently and seriously address the stray dog problem, noting that people have been chased and bitten multiple times in the past. They express concern that without intervention, similar or more severe incidents could occur involving other children and adults.

Fake Monk Caught Distributing Phone Numbers to Women on Train, Soliciting Sex; Authorities Apprehend Him After He Initially Denied Being an Impostor

A man impersonating a Buddhist monk was caught at a train station in Nakhon Ratchasima after distributing his phone number to women and soliciting sex; authorities confirmed he had never been ordained at any temple despite his claims.

8 May Khaosod

On May 8 at Chira Train Station in Muang District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, Dr. Pornpana Saenkarun, director of the Nakhon Ratchasima Provincial Buddhism Office, along with city police, apprehended a man dressed as a Buddhist monk following complaints from the public about his inappropriate behavior. He allegedly gave his phone number to women, claiming to be seeking sexual contact. When investigated, the suspect claimed affiliation with a temple in Nakhon Phanom Province. However, after contacting the temple, authorities confirmed that no monk by his name was ever registered or stayed there. Verification of his ordination documents revealed the name Phra Manositta Tissavaro, but temples in Nakhon Phanom confirmed no one with that name had ever been ordained. Police conducted a body search but found nothing illegal. During negotiations with Phra Khru Siritarunobhas, the subdistrict abbot, the man initially denied everything and claimed to be a genuine monk. However, documentation confirmed his real name was Manositta (surname withheld), a Nakhon Phanom resident, and he was not a legitimate monk—merely impersonating one. After prolonged discussion, he eventually confessed. The district abbot, moved by compassion, decided not to file charges but instead placed him on a daily record with a warning that any future impersonation would result in immediate arrest.

Why Even a Monk Got Fooled: 71-Year-Old Abbot Orders Durian Online, Seller Offers 8 Fruits for 550 Baht, Receives Shock Delivery

A 71-year-old Buddhist abbot in Samut Prakan province ordered eight durians online for 550 baht but received only four unripe, undersized fruits, leaving him deeply disappointed. A vigilant delivery driver, noticing a pattern of fraudulent durian orders from the same seller, warned the abbot before delivery and helped arrange a refund. The incident highlights ongoing online shopping fraud affecting consumers, from monks to retired teachers seeking fresh produce.

8 May Khaosod

A private courier driver in Samut Prakan has released a warning video after multiple customers received substandard durians that didn't match their online orders. The driver, Naresorn Somana, 39, discovered a suspicious package headed to a retired teacher's home—the same address that had received defective durians previously. Upon opening the package before delivery, he found unripe durians that were far smaller than advertised. He decided to film a warning video and arranged for the customer to return the goods without incurring additional charges.

Naresorn explained that in his years as a delivery driver, he has witnessed frequent online shopping fraud, with customers receiving items completely different from what they ordered—such as receiving only rags instead of the clothing they purchased. When another suspicious package arrived from the same seller, this time addressed to a temple, he again inspected it and found identical unripe durians. He immediately called the monk recipient to warn him.

The first victim interviewed was Pranee Nasmanuek, 61, a retired teacher, who ordered durians through a Facebook Live stream for 550 baht, expecting 5-12 fruits weighing 5 kilograms. When the package arrived, she was shocked to find only tiny, unripe fruits that looked nothing like what was advertised. She expressed regret about online durian shopping and decided to buy from the market in the future.

Reporter then visited Kwan Sa-Art Temple in Samut Prakan to meet with Luang Ta Prayut Rungpetcharat, the 71-year-old abbot who ordered the durians. He explained that after seeing the durians on Facebook Live, he was tempted to try ordering. The seller called back with an upgraded promotion: instead of 3-6 fruits for 333 baht, he could get 8 fruits for 550 baht. He decided to order and waited nearly a week for delivery.

Luang Ta Prayut said that when the shop called back, they knew he was a monk because he provided the temple address. However, when the package arrived, he received only 4 unripe, tiny durians that were inedible. He felt deeply disappointed as he had planned to share them with temple visitors. Fortunately, the delivery driver called ahead and the abbot was able to return the goods without losing money. He also mentioned having been scammed 2-3 times previously through online shopping for electrical appliances, but was grateful that this time he avoided wasting money on unripe durians.

China Sentences Two Generals to Death with Two-Year Reprieve in Corruption Case

China has sentenced two former defense ministers, General Wei Fenghe and General Li Shangfu, to death with two-year reprieves on corruption charges involving bribery and abuse of authority. The convictions are part of President Xi Jinping's sweeping anti-corruption campaign targeting the military, which has led to the removal of high-ranking officials including the top PLA commander earlier this year. Under Chinese law, death sentences with reprieve are typically commuted to life imprisonment if no further offenses occur during the reprieve period.

8 May Khaosod

A Chinese court has sentenced two former defense ministers to death with a two-year reprieve for corruption charges. General Wei Fenghe, 72, who served as defense minister from 2018-2023, and General Li Shangfu, 68, who served less than eight months in 2023, were convicted on corruption charges. According to Xinhua news agency, Li Shangfu was suspected of accepting massive bribes and facilitating bribery of others. Investigations revealed that Li failed to perform his duties properly and pursued personal gain for himself and others. Wei Fenghe's investigation began in 2023 and found he accepted substantial bribes in money and valuables, and helped others obtain improper benefits in personnel assignments. His actions were deemed extremely serious, causing significant harm and major losses to the military. The military has been a primary target of China's broad anti-corruption campaign under President Xi Jinping since he came to power in 2012. In early 2024, General Zhang Youxia, commander of the People's Liberation Army and a Politburo member viewed as a long-time Xi ally, was removed from office. In China, death sentences with reprieve are typically commuted to life imprisonment if the convict commits no further offenses during the reprieve period. Once commuted to life imprisonment, there is no opportunity for further sentence reduction or temporary release.

PM Anutin Angry Over Hun Manet Meeting, Cancels MOU44, Blasts Fake News Spreaders, Reaffirms No Border Checkpoint Opening, Rules Out Military Force

PM Anutin formally notified Cambodia of Thailand's decision to cancel MOU44 during a meeting at the ASEAN Summit in the Philippines, with both nations agreeing to pursue maritime boundary discussions through the UN's compulsory conciliation

8 May Khaosod

At 19:30 on May 8, 2025, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul posted a lengthy message on Facebook while attending the 48th ASEAN Summit in the Philippines. He explained that as Prime Minister, his duty is to work on matters that benefit Thailand and its people, without seeking publicity. The Philippine President, who chairs the summit, arranged a meeting between Anutin and Cambodian PM Hun Manet before the formal opening to reduce tensions. Anutin used this opportunity to directly inform the Cambodian PM that Thailand's government has decided to cancel MOU44. Hun Manet expressed disappointment and stated that Cambodia would resort to the Compulsory Conciliation process under UNCLOS (UN Convention on the Law of the Sea) to address maritime boundary issues going forward. Anutin noted that this approach aligns with Thailand's position, as Cambodia recently ratified UNCLOS earlier this year, meaning future discussions will follow the same international framework. The face-to-face notification means Cambodia has officially received Thailand's decision, and Anutin assured Thai citizens that Koh Kood remains Thai territory without any disputed demarcation line. Other bilateral matters will continue through existing Joint Border Committees (JBC and GBC), with plans to gradually restore higher-level diplomatic relations as appropriate. Both nations agreed to strengthen police cooperation against call center gangs and scammers. Anutin clarified that no discussion occurred regarding border checkpoint openings, and other cooperation initiatives have not yet been addressed.

Major Drug Bust: Region 4 Police Intercept Large-Scale Ice Trafficking Operation, Seizing Over 238 Kilograms

Region 4 Police seized 238 kilograms of methamphetamine worth over 300 million baht during a highway intercept operation in Bung Kan on May 8, arresting one suspect as his accomplice fled into the forest.

8 May Khaosod

At 5 p.m. on May 8, 2025, Lieutenant Colonel Somphop of the Region 4 Narcotics Suppression Bureau led officers in intercepting and arresting a drug trafficking operation. After tracking suspicious pickup truck movements along the Nong Khai-Bueng Kan highway, police surrounded and arrested one suspect while seizing 8 sacks of ice weighing approximately 238 kilograms valued at over 300 million baht, along with one pickup truck and a mobile phone. A second accomplice escaped into the forest under cover of darkness.

Region 4 Police Commander General Santi Chaianiramai stated that the operation continues to target major drug trafficking networks smuggling large quantities of methamphetamine through Mekong River border provinces. Officers had been surveilling an Isuzu D-Max pickup truck with Nakhon Pathom registration plates suspected of transporting ice.

When officers attempted to inspect the vehicle near a rubber plantation in Bung Kan's Muang district, the driver accelerated and attempted to escape through palm oil plantation rows. Police deployed tactics that resulted in a blowout of the front tire. The driver then fled on foot but was apprehended by pursuing officers—identified as 29-year-old Ekarat (nickname: Palm). His passenger escaped into the forest.

Inspection of the pickup truck revealed fertilizer sacks wrapped in black plastic containing 238 units of ice methamphetamine weighing approximately 238 kilograms, valued at over 300 million baht. Five sacks were hidden in the rear seating area and three more in the truck bed. The suspect was arrested and evidence transferred to Hat Khom Police Station in Bueng Kan for prosecution on charges of methamphetamine possession with intent to distribute, operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs, and illegal drug use.

Thailand's Press Freedom Ranking Continues to Slide—and Could Drop Even Further Next Year

Thailand's press freedom ranking has declined to 92nd out of 180 countries in the latest international index, with experts arguing the situation is actually worse than rankings suggest. The core problem is pervasive self-censorship among Thai journalists and media organizations regarding monarchy criticism, which masks the true lack of press freedom while making prosecution unnecessary.

8 May Khaosod

On Sunday afternoon, the writer received an unexpected call from France from exiled Thai political dissident Jaran Ditapichai. The 78-year-old has had a remarkable political journey: university student in France, communist insurgent in 1970s Thailand, prisoner of the Burmese junta for distributing pro-democracy materials in Yangon, national human rights commissioner, redshirt movement co-leader, and now a political exile facing lèse-majesté charges since 2014.

Jaran called to express support for World Press Freedom Day, observed on May 3rd. When asked how many Thai journalists he admired he had contacted that day, he could only name three. Regarding Thai media organizations, he noted there were few worthy of mention, and complained that one major, financially successful Thai-language online outlet was secretly funded by a large conglomerate while failing to disclose its backing.

Thailand's current media landscape offers little to celebrate. The Paris-based Reporters Without Borders (RSF) released its 2026 World Press Freedom Index last week, showing Thailand's ranking among 180 countries dropped from 85th to 92nd place. As someone invited annually by RSF to assess Thailand's press freedom conditions for the past decade on a voluntary basis, the writer agrees with this assessment—and believes it may be too generous.

While Thailand has had no imprisoned or killed journalists in recent years, this doesn't reflect actual press freedom. Nearly all Thai journalists and media organizations have internalized self-censorship regarding anything mildly critical of the monarchy, eliminating the need for authorities to prosecute or imprison them. This widespread self-censorship inflates international rankings by creating a false impression of freedom.

The recent case of Bang La, a former security guard whose facial resemblance to the Thai king sparked controversy, exemplifies this self-censorship. Ultra-royalists attacked him, though he later confirmed he wasn't charged under lèse-majesté laws. Nevertheless, doctored images of him deemed offensive to the monarchy circulated on social media, demonstrating how the Thai press largely avoids covering such sensitive issues.
