Police Bust Illegal Wildlife Breeding Operation in Chiang Mai, Seize Over 60 Birds

4d ago Khaosod

On May 15, 2026, police led by Major Chirayuth Inkaew from Region 4's Investigation Section executed court-ordered searches at two locations in Chiang Mai. The first raid targeted a residence in Nong Khai Luang village, Nong Chom subdistrict, San Sai district, belonging to a 49-year-old businessman named Chati who operates a business in downtown Chiang Mai's Chang Phueak area. Officers discovered 40 banded parakeets, 2 rose-ringed parakeets, and 3 black-hooded orioles housed in cages at the property.

During inspection, officers found that 4 birds wore registered leg bands matching the breeding license records. However, the 40 banded parakeets had no identification marks, indicating they were likely wild birds illegally captured and caged. Another parakeet was identified as imported from India and therefore not protected under Thai wildlife law.

Investigators also found 2 adult rose-ringed parakeets without any identification bands. According to wildlife officials, this species is strictly protected and cannot be privately owned. Additionally, 3 adult black-hooded orioles without proper documentation were discovered, and records showed Chati had not declared possession of these birds. Wildlife authorities determined that Chati's breeding license had expired over a year ago.

Chati was charged with illegally possessing protected wildlife without authorization and operating an unlicensed breeding facility. A second raid at a Chiang Phueak area building in downtown Chiang Mai uncovered 11 additional banded parakeets, with only one wearing an identification band. The remaining birds lacked proper documentation. Officers located the suspect during this second operation.

Labor Minister Acknowledges Thai Workers Fleeing Korean Visas: 30 Out of 57 Workers Result in Year-Long Ban, Tracking and Blacklisting Orders Issued

Thailand's Labor Minister acknowledged that 30 of 57 workers sent to South Korea fled their jobs, triggering a suspension of placements from four provinces and year-long bans with blacklisting orders for the absconded workers.

4d ago Khaosod

On May 15, 2025, at the Ministry of Labor, Labor Minister Julphand Amornvivat held talks with South Korea's Ambassador to Thailand regarding the suspension of worker placements from four Thai provinces under the MOU system. The suspension came after discovering a significant number of Thai workers had fled their employment contracts.

The minister confirmed the Labor Ministry is urgently addressing the issue in both short and long-term solutions to restore South Korea's confidence. South Korea's embassy acknowledged that the suspension follows standard criteria applied to all countries sending workers to South Korea, not measures specific to Thailand.

"The MOU clearly stipulates that workers must not flee employment, with South Korea setting a threshold of no more than 20 percent. However, in Thailand's latest batch of 57 workers, 30 disappeared—approximately 59 percent—which is exceptionally high," the minister stated.

Before the full blacklisting measures take effect, Thailand negotiated for one final batch of workers, which South Korea approved. However, no further extensions will be granted. The ministry is now tracking the 30 absconded workers through family contacts and local authorities to encourage their return to the proper system.

"We have names, records, and families, and we are monitoring the situation. We cannot deny that some genuinely fled their employment," Julphand acknowledged.

Under Thai law, direct prosecution may not be possible since the violation occurred under South Korea's immigration laws. However, the Labor Ministry can restrict future overseas work rights. "Those who refuse cooperation may face limitations on foreign employment permits, especially for South Korea. E-8 visa defaulters will be banned entirely," the minister stated.

Regarding solutions to worker flight, the ministry plans stricter pre-departure screenings, behavior and background checks, and implementation of the "Smart TOEA" tracking system for Thai workers in South Korea. "Workers will report monthly through the system to confirm they are employed at the designated location and complying with regulations. This should alleviate South Korean concerns," Julphand explained.

When asked if he plans to travel personally for negotiations, Julphand confirmed he informed the South Korean ambassador of his readiness to discuss with South Korea's labor and justice ministers immediately once a schedule is arranged, as this matter is critical to bilateral relations.

ONE's The Inner Circle event on Friday, May 15th at Lumpinee Boxing Stadium (Ramintra) was held with all 26 fighters successfully passing weigh-ins and hydration tests before competing at their agreed weight classes.

The featured matchup marked Superlek's return to competition. Dayakayev came out aggressively in the opening round, landing a powerful right hand that sent Superlek down for an eight-count immediately. Superlek mounted a comeback attempt, particularly in the final round, where he dominated the striking exchanges. Man Came for Muscle Pain, Doctor Rushed Him into Surgery for Heart Condition—No Warning Signs

A man seeking treatment for muscle pain discovered a severe heart condition requiring emergency surgery after blood work revealed elevated cardiac markers. The case highlights how heart disease can strike without warning signs, even in appa

4d ago Khaosod

On May 15, TikTok user @artlimitad posted a cautionary video about nearly losing his life after recently discovering he had a severe heart condition. In his post, he wrote: "I went to the doctor for muscle pain and he told me I needed heart surgery. I watched the doctor work on my heart. He said my heart rate was way too high—incredible. It took 2 hours. Men over 40, this is very dangerous. There were absolutely no warning signs. You might not be as lucky as I was. I finished the surgery yesterday. It's scarier than any disease—no warning signs at all."

The poster explained that he lived a normal life, confident he took good care of himself—exercising, doing push-ups, and not even taking medicine for headaches. The symptoms that day had happened before, so he thought it was the same old muscle issue. He often fell asleep at odd angles that left his arm numb, switching sides throughout the night. When he woke up that morning and sat up, he felt soreness. He tried to raise his hand and take deep breaths, but it didn't help. The pain was in his left arm, radiating to his shoulder, and his jaw felt tight like he'd been chewing hard. So he messaged Jemaine, who immediately told him to see a doctor within half an hour or sooner, warning it could be a heart problem. He rushed to the hospital alone.

When he arrived, he described his symptoms to the doctor and had blood work done, which came back normal—all values were fine, including his heart. He tried to move to a regular room, but the senior doctor insisted he wait another 3 hours for another blood test. When those results came back, they were very bad. They didn't know where his heart was blocked, so treatment began immediately.

He was fortunate to speak with a nurse who mentioned that many men aged 30-50 die from this condition at the hospital with no warning signs. The ultrasound showed nothing at first. The doctors almost sent him home if not for the elevated cardiac markers in his blood work. The doctor said surgery was necessary—it was very dangerous because they didn't know when his heart might fail.

During the procedure, which lasted 2 hours, he remained awake and watched as they injected dye to locate the blockage. The doctor said it was bad—the heart tissue had already died. Two arteries were blocked. He couldn't understand how this happened since he exercised and took care of himself. His heart was strong, but his breathing became shallow and his blood pressure started dropping. They successfully opened one artery but the other remained blocked. The doctor said it was difficult. When they saw his pressure dropping, they stopped. He spent another 2 nights in the ICU on blood thinner medication before returning for another successful procedure.

He was fortunate because his main coronary artery was large, allowing good blood supply. Not everyone is as lucky. His arteries were blocked at the ends on two lines—if it had blocked any higher, he might have died that day. This condition has no warning signs; you just fall asleep. Many men over 35 die from it.

The initial symptoms: pain radiating down the left arm and jaw tightness like chewing something hard.

Special Report – Exit Fee: A Revenue Lifeline for the State or a Ticking Time Bomb for Tourism?

Thailand's government is considering a 1,000-baht exit fee on Thai travelers to generate revenue for tourism infrastructure, but industry leaders warn the tax could damage airlines, diplomacy, and business mobility while contradicting effor

4d ago Khaosod

Amid energy crises and intensifying competition in the global tourism industry, Thai tourism faces mounting pressure to undergo major restructuring. Following Surasakdi Panjreuchavalkul's appointment in the Anuthane 2 government, the sector has rapidly shifted toward high-quality tourism. The strategy is being driven through three urgent measures: reducing 60-day visa exemptions from 93 countries to 57 for better tourist screening aligned with quality goals; implementing a 300-baht Thailand Tourism Fee from foreign visitors to fund tourism infrastructure and safety standards; and collecting a 1,000-baht exit fee from Thai travelers to stem capital outflows and support the "half-per-person" subsidy program and long-term tourism funds—projected to generate up to 10 billion baht annually given that 10 million Thais travel abroad yearly.

However, the exit fee has become increasingly controversial. Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Supatchaya Sutthimanphand, who oversees tourism, has applied the brakes, emphasizing careful consideration before proceeding through the formal cabinet review process. Meanwhile, industry leaders including Tanpol Cheevaratnapon, president of the Thai Travel Industry Association (ATTA), met with tourism officials to propose alternative measures and requested postponement of the exit fee, fearing it would damage Thai travelers' mobility and reduce future international flights.

Adisak Chairatananon, ATTA's secretary general, strongly opposed the measure, urging the government to stop viewing Thais as short-term revenue sources and instead recognize them as diplomatic ambassadors and strategic national assets for international negotiations. He called for concrete implementation of Two-Way Tourism strategy to position Thai tourism as a global leader, arguing that one-directional marketing no longer suffices in today's changing global tourism landscape.

Adisak contended the measure contradicts strategic negotiating power on the world stage and creates multidimensional damage: destabilizing airline cost structures dependent on passenger load factors both ways; undermining diplomatic leverage by conflicting with open-country and visa-free policies, potentially inviting retaliatory tax measures or visa restrictions from trading partners; and hindering cross-border economic growth by increasing costs for SMEs, startups, and investors needing to travel for business meetings, trade negotiations, and international exhibitions—ultimately closing off opportunities for expansion.

EEC Real Estate Market Slows: Condo Prices Continue to Fall as Excess Inventory Pressures Buyer Demand

Condo prices in Thailand's Eastern Economic Corridor fell to their lowest levels in early 2026 as oversupply and weak buyer demand forced developers to slash prices and offer heavy promotions across Chachoengsao, Chonburi, and Rayong provin

4d ago Khaosod

The Government Housing Bank's Real Estate Information Center released its analysis of residential property prices in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC)—covering Chachoengsao, Chonburi, and Rayong provinces—for the first quarter of 2026. The overall housing market continues to face pressure from weakening buyer demand and high accumulated inventory, forcing developers to adjust pricing strategies and intensify promotional campaigns to clear stock.

While the townhouse market maintains positive price momentum, the condominium sector shows clear signs of weakness, particularly in competitive areas with continuous new project openings. The EEC townhouse price index reached 126.4 points in Q1 2026, representing a 1.3% year-over-year increase from 124.8 points, though it declined 0.1% quarter-over-quarter. This moderation reflects the tension between sustained price growth and mounting inventory pressures, coupled with consumer caution stemming from sluggish economic conditions that has forced developers to employ more aggressive pricing and promotional tactics.

By province, Chonburi led with the highest townhouse price growth at 130.3 points (up 1.9% YoY), followed by Chachoengsao at 122.2 points (up 1.3%) and Rayong at 122.5 points (up 0.6%). Single-family homes emerged as the most stable segment with a price index of 150.0 points, up 1.4% year-over-year, particularly strong in Chonburi where prices climbed 2.0%. Twin houses showed the strongest growth among townhouse types at 115.5 points (up 2.6% YoY), reflecting continued demand for affordable housing, while townhouses displayed clear weakness at 113.8 points, flat year-over-year but down 0.1% quarterly, with declining prices in Rayong and Chachoengsao signaling intensified competition in the mid-to-lower market segment.

The condominium market remained under severe pressure from oversupply, with condo prices falling to 101.9 points in Q1 2026—down 1.0% year-over-year and 0.3% quarter-over-quarter. High inventory levels, especially in areas with continuous new project launches, have compelled developers to offer aggressive promotions including cash discounts, free gifts, and waived transfer fees. Meanwhile, uneven economic recovery, limited household income growth, and elevated household debt levels continue to make consumers more cautious about property purchases and constrain their access to credit.

Anutin Huddles with Top-Tier CEOs of CP and Saha Pathumpibul, Stresses Government-Private Sector Partnership for Economic Strength

Prime Minister Anutin met with major business leaders from Charoen Pokphand and Saha Pathumpibul to discuss government-private sector cooperation on economic growth, emphasizing the need to reduce regulatory barriers and pursue clean energy

4d ago Khaosod

At 5 p.m. on May 15, 2026, at the Phakdibodindorn Building of the Government House, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, also serving as Interior Minister, chaired a joint consultation meeting between the government and private sector on strategies to enhance the country's economic competitiveness. Senior executives from major business groups attended, with Thanintr Jiarawanan, senior chairman of Charoen Pokphand Group, and Wetit Chokwattana, managing director of Saha Pathumpibul Public Company Limited, flanking the prime minister alongside other business leaders.

The prime minister stated that today's agenda was for businesspeople to speak and government to listen. He emphasized that the current government views itself as the driver of economic growth alongside the private sector, noting that separate paths cannot achieve national goals. He highlighted the government's commitment to reducing obstacles for private enterprise, including streamlining redundant regulations, resolving labor shortages, and opening doors to the emerging green industry sector.

Anutin noted that in this meeting, there is no head of the table—everyone is equal—and he deliberately seated multiple ministers alongside business representatives. He referenced his recent ASEAN summit participation in the Philippines, where he proposed emphasizing clean energy, regional electrical grid networks, and food security. He stressed that ASEAN must speak with one voice on these three critical issues to enhance the bloc's geopolitical importance. Anutin concluded that Thailand possesses significant strength and potential in all three areas, positioning the country as ASEAN's center and offering Thailand greater economic opportunities than other nations, but emphasized that public and private sectors must advance together.
