Prime Minister Anuthine Charnweerakul assured Thai citizens not to worry about meeting Hun Manet at the ASEAN Summit, reaffirming Thailand's commitment to principles whereby all discussions must prioritize national interests and sovereignty.
At 10:30 AM on May 7, 2026, at Don Mueang Royal Thai Air Force Base, the Prime Minister and Interior Minister gave an interview before departing for Cebu, Philippines, to attend the 48th ASEAN Summit (May 7-9). Regarding expectations for the meeting, he stated that all matters must benefit Thailand.
When asked about the summit's objectives, Anuthine emphasized that his visit is strictly for work—not a leisure trip or social calls. He will be negotiating and presenting Thailand's position to inform the ASEAN community about Thailand's situation, policies, and planned actions.
On the anticipated meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, Anuthine said they will meet tonight, though it may not be a bilateral meeting since the Philippines is chairing ASEAN and will facilitate such encounters. He expressed hope for a positive atmosphere involving all ASEAN nations and an initial face-to-face meeting, but stressed there is no need for concern.
As Prime Minister managing Thai-Cambodian relations since taking office, and previously as Interior Minister, Anuthine has consistently operated on principles. He reiterated that any discussions or consultations must benefit Thailand and protect its sovereignty as the highest priority, serving Thai people's interests.
