On June 29, Ms. Areepa Ngernbamrung, Deputy Secretary-General of the Narcotics Bureau and spokesperson for the office, briefed the media on developments regarding an airline crew member arrested by Australian authorities in Melbourne for attempting to smuggle Class 1 narcotics (heroin). The Narcotics Bureau and AFP have maintained cooperation under "Joint Special Operation Taskforce Storm" since 2016, exchanging intelligence, conducting arrests, and seizing assets from suspects both in Thailand and Australia as well as those who have fled to other countries.
Most recently, the Narcotics Bureau exchanged information with the AFP and obtained clear evidence. The bureau will accelerate the investigation to dismantle the heroin smuggling network to Australia. On the same day, authorities raided the apartment of the woman suspect and questioned her boyfriend as part of the investigation to identify drug owners and network members involved in smuggling narcotics to Australia. Officials are currently gathering evidence and tracking accomplices for prosecution.
The Narcotics Bureau spokesperson explained screening measures at Thai airports, noting that Airports of Thailand currently uses X-ray scanning on all passengers' carry-on and checked baggage to detect dangerous objects, weapons, and prohibited items. Crew members, who have direct access to aircraft and operational areas, undergo the same security screening. The bureau is coordinating with Airports of Thailand to enhance security measures and strengthen screening procedures.
Additionally, the Narcotics Bureau has integrated efforts between Thai and international law enforcement agencies to combat transnational drug trafficking through airport and port interdiction task forces (AITF and SITF) and expanded regional cooperation through ASEAN networks (AAITF and ASITF). Training programs have been established for transport operators and private companies to prevent drug smuggling through international parcels.
Ms. Areepa warned the public to strictly avoid accepting packages or luggage to carry across borders, as drug trafficking networks commonly hire couriers to transport contraband. Those caught unknowingly carrying drugs face serious charges with penalties ranging from life imprisonment to death under both Thai and destination country laws, particularly for Class 1 narcotics smuggling. The public can report suspected drug activity to the Narcotics Bureau hotline at 1386, available 24/7.
