Good Samaritan Discovers 11 Kittens in Abandoned Area; Two Mother Cats Care for Them Together
A good Samaritan in Georgia discovered 11 kittens and two mother cats sheltering together in an abandoned lot and contacted a local animal rescue organization. The two mother cats, named Mamasita and Chikatina, are caring for all the kittens despite them coming from different litters—a rare and remarkable maternal behavior. The rescue shelter is now monitoring the cats' relationship to determine if the bonded mothers can be adopted together in the future.
A compassionate resident discovered 11 kittens in an abandoned lot in northern Georgia, along with two mother cats working together to care for them. In early April, the concerned citizen contacted Furkids Animal Rescue and Shelters for assistance after finding the cats sheltering under an old car.
When the cats arrived at the shelter, both mother cats were muddy and underweight but showed no serious injuries. They received initial vaccinations before continuing to care for all 11 kittens. The shelter named the tabby mother cat "Mamasita" and the black-and-white mother "Chikatina." Both are friendly with people and the kittens. Staff believe Mamasita may be Chikatina's mother, which explains their strong bond.
Staff shared a remarkable detail: while the area has many stray cats and finding large litters is common, this case is unusual because the kittens come from different litters, yet both mother cats are caring for them exceptionally well—a behavior that is rarely observed. Going forward, staff will monitor the two mother cats' behavior after the kittens are weaned to determine whether they can be adopted together.
