US Security Chief Celebrates Iran's World Cup Exit

US Homeland Security Secretary Markawayne Mullin expressed satisfaction at Iran's World Cup elimination, saying he was pleased enough to dance after the team was denied visas and forced to travel through Mexico for all matches.

2h ago Khaosod

U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markawayne Mullin expressed joy at Iran's elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, saying he was so pleased he felt like dancing. Iran exited in the group stage after drawing 1-1 with Austria and Algeria. During a recent security department briefing, Mullin stated, "I'm just happy they're done and won't be back." Iran faced significant obstacles during the tournament, as many players and officials were denied U.S. visas and had to travel through Mexico for all three matches. U.S. authorities only permitted the team to stay one day before matches, forcing them to return to their camp immediately. Iran's team complained of being the most oppressed team at the World Cup. Mullin revealed his satisfaction: "I was very pleased we could revoke their visas and tell them to leave U.S. soil. I might sing a song or two, or maybe even feel like dancing with joy. No other team has required more of our administrative effort than Iran."

2h ago Khaosod

On June 30, 2569, police led by Lt. Gen. Worawit Yanjinda, commissioner of the Narcotics Police Bureau, raided a luxury resort on Ramindra-Ekamai bypass road after receiving a tip that a fugitive wanted for attempted murder was hosting a drug party at the location. Officers discovered loud music, dim lighting, and some individuals asleep inside. They took 12 people into custody, including two wanted suspects: Woraphop, wanted for attempted murder, and Sittep, wanted for possession of ketamine. Six others were detained for drug possession, while four voluntarily agreed to treatment, including a French tourist.

Police found ecstasy, ice methamphetamine, ketamine, and electronic cigarette devices filled with etomidate (poke) hidden throughout the resort. A search of the suspects' pickup truck yielded additional drugs.

Following up on the investigation, officers obtained a search warrant and raided a condominium in the Rama 9-Asok area belonging to Aran, one of the suspects. He confessed to using the space as a drug packaging and distribution center. Police discovered 115 poke device heads, 130 grams of etomidate powder, and various packaging equipment and chemicals. According to his confession, he purchased white etomidate powder from a Thai woman called "Jae" at approximately 65,000 baht per unit, mixed it into poke heads sold at 2,500 baht each, and distributed at least 10,000 units, generating nearly 25 million baht in revenue.

All suspects and evidence were turned over to investigators from Chokechai, Chanasongkhram, and Phaholyothin police stations for further prosecution according to their respective jurisdictions.

Squishy Toy Craze Resurges Amid Safety And Waste Fears

Squishy toys are surging in popularity on social media, but recent UK enforcement actions have uncovered counterfeit products containing hazardous chemicals and excessive benzene levels, prompting safety concerns among Thai consumers and re

2h ago Khaosod

The stress-relief toy known as the "squishy" has made a comeback on TikTok and other social media platforms, with users reviewing, collecting and promoting a wide range of designs. The toys are now widely available through online marketplaces, retail stores and stalls near schools.

The renewed trend has also prompted concerns over product quality and safety, particularly for cheap, unbranded or counterfeit items. While no widespread safety issue has been confirmed in Thailand, recent enforcement actions in the United Kingdom have highlighted potential risks linked to some non-compliant products.

On 8 June, Trading Standards officers in Glasgow seized more than 5,900 counterfeit squishy toys from a warehouse after finding many lacked mandatory UKCA or CE conformity markings. Officials warned that some products could contain hazardous chemicals, including formaldehyde, phthalates and industrial solvents, which may cause skin irritation, nausea, headaches and respiratory problems after prolonged contact or inhalation.

On 24 June, Gloucestershire Trading Standards in England seized another 1,968 non-compliant squishy toys. Authorities also warned against a viral social media trend encouraging users to heat the toys in microwave ovens, saying the material could overheat, rupture and cause burns.

On 25 June, the UK's Office for Product Safety and Standards recalled certain batches of Squeezy Dumplings toys after laboratory tests found benzene levels in the outer material at four times the legal limit. Consumers were advised to stop using the affected products immediately and return them for a refund. Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen when exposure occurs at high levels or over extended periods.

In Thailand, no official recalls involving squishy toys have been announced. However, the recent overseas cases have prompted discussion among consumers about the safety of products sold through online platforms and general retailers, particularly those without Thai-language labels, manufacturer details or clear safety information. Consumer advocates have also called for closer monitoring of toys popular among children and teenagers.

Environmental concerns have also emerged. Many squishy toys are made from polyurethane foam or thermoplastic rubber, both plastic-based materials that do not easily biodegrade. If the current wave of popularity proves short-lived, discarded toys could add to plastic waste.

Some collectors note that squishy toys have been on the market for more than a decade but have regained popularity largely because of social media. They recommend buying products from reputable brands that comply with recognised safety standards, even if they are more expensive, to reduce the risk of purchasing poorly manufactured or counterfeit items.

Fans say squishies remain harmless toys and collectibles when purchased from reliable sources and used as intended. The recent enforcement actions overseas have nevertheless served as a reminder that consumers should exercise caution when purchasing these products.

Nearly 100 Monkeys Escape Lopburi Zoo Enclosure

Nearly 100 monkeys escaped a municipal animal facility in Lopburi on June 30, spreading into residential areas before authorities launched a recapture operation using tranquilizer darts and baited cages.

2h ago Khaosod

LOPBURI — Nearly 100 monkeys escaped from a municipal animal enclosure in Lopburi overnight, triggering a large-scale effort by officials to recapture the animals after they spread into nearby residential areas.

The escape was discovered on the morning of 30 June 2026 at the Lopburi Municipality Animal Nursery in Pho Kao Ton subdistrict, Mueang Lopburi district. The monkeys had been placed under municipal care by the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP).

Authorities said the monkeys broke through part of the enclosure and got out. Staff prevented more than 1,000 other monkeys housed in the same facility from escaping.

Following the discovery, Lopburi Mayor Chamroen Salacheep directed municipal officers and relevant agencies to launch an urgent operation to recapture the escaped monkeys before they could cause further disruption to the community. Lopburi Governor Weeraphong Ritrod, along with deputy governors, district officials, municipal authorities, DNP personnel, provincial livestock officials and other agencies, coordinated at the site.

Officials gradually recaptured some monkeys while another team repaired and reinforced the damaged enclosure. Some dominant monkeys required tranquiliser darts to capture, while food-baited cages were set around the area to lure others back.

The governor said the damaged enclosure has been repaired and strengthened to prevent future escapes. As a long-term solution, authorities plan to build a more secure double-layer enclosure to contain dominant monkeys. The province is also preparing to establish a foundation to support food costs and improve monkey welfare.

The mayor said some monkeys had voluntarily returned to the enclosure, though others remained nearby. He suggested the escape may have been caused by hunger, heat, overcrowding or the animals' desire to roam freely. He apologised to residents and said officials would survey any damage, urging affected residents to report it for assistance.

Politician Exposes 26 Billion Baht Education Mega-Project

A parliament member questions a 26-billion-baht education technology mega-project, citing slow implementation, unclear policy direction, and concerns about procurement transparency in the digital learning platform initiated by the Bhumjaith

2h ago Khaosod

At 5:25 p.m. on June 30, 2025, in parliament, Prirat Wachrasinthu, a list-based member of parliament from the People's Party, debated the 2570 fiscal year budget bill, noting that while large state projects traditionally involved infrastructure like buildings and dams, modern mega-projects now extend into the digital realm. He highlighted a massive education learning platform project worth over 26 billion baht that was initiated under the Bhumjaithai party's leadership in the education and higher education, science, research, and innovation ministries. The project comprises four major components: the NDLP (Anywhere Anytime) learning promotion program costing 17.3 billion baht; a skill/credit portfolio system for primary and secondary students costing 3.15 billion baht under the education ministry; a skill/credit portfolio program for university students costing 5.14 billion baht; and the National Credit Bank system costing 384 million baht under the higher education ministry. Combined, these four projects exceed 26.2 billion baht—equivalent to building 10 Auditor General offices or matching the annual budgets of five combined ministries: Commerce, Industry, Tourism and Sports, and Energy.

Prirat noted that preliminary feedback from teachers and pilot schools on the NDLP program suggests the results may not justify the budget spent. System support has been slow, and schools cannot fix their own data—central corrections sometimes take months. He called on the government to clarify why implementation has been problematic and how future failures will be prevented.

"When requesting parliament approval for billions of baht to proceed with this mega-project, the government must clearly answer why past implementation has been sluggish and how they will prevent future failure," Prirat said. He identified unclear policy direction as a major concern, with the current education minister failing to articulate how the mega-project will be leveraged or how educational technology will be utilized. The minister's public statements have been inconsistent and directionless, he added.

Prirat further contended that the biggest problem may not be policy confusion but rather a lack of transparency in procurement processes, raising questions about who truly benefits from the mega-project. After reviewing the terms of reference for all project components, he found suspicious details in nearly every document that warrant investigation.

Government Cuts Provincial Budget Over Misuse Of Funds

The government is cutting provincial budgets due to misuse of funds on road construction and projects better handled by specialized agencies, with the Prime Minister's Office arguing such spending diverts money from intended development goa

2h ago Khaosod

During a June 30, 2569 parliamentary session reviewing the 3.788 trillion baht fiscal year 2570 budget proposal, Prime Minister's Office Minister Phradet Prischannantkul explained the provincial budget cuts. He noted that 8-9 percent of provincial budgets were being spent on road construction, which falls outside the intended purpose of provincial allocations. Provincial budgets are meant to enable provinces to develop comprehensive plans that improve living standards and economic growth, not to duplicate projects already handled by other agencies.

Phradet argued that road construction and small-scale water projects do not align with provincial budget objectives, and such work should be managed by the Department of Rural Roads, which can properly prioritize urgent projects. Previous governments and the current administration have established guidelines preventing overlapping projects between different agencies. Provincial budgets should fund other development initiatives rather than roads, tourism promotions, or solar installations that misuse their intended purpose.

Regarding criticism that the budget cuts undermine decentralization efforts, Phradet emphasized that provincial budgets represent budget distribution, not true decentralization. Decentralization means transferring power to local government organizations. He reiterated that the current government prioritizes genuine decentralization to local authorities through equitable resource allocation, not favoritism based on proximity to agencies or decision-makers, as occurred previously.
