KHON KAEN — 2 July 2026, A heavily intoxicated man was rescued after climbing into a 500-litre water tank and falling asleep inside, police said.

Police were alerted at 11:30 after residents reported finding a man inside a water tank in an alley off Phimphasut Road in Khon Kaen municipality.

When officers and rescue workers arrived, they found the unidentified man standing upright inside the tank with only his head above the rim. He was unresponsive despite repeated attempts to wake him.

Rescuers drained the water from the tank before carefully tipping it onto its side to pull the man out safely.

After regaining consciousness, the man walked to the roadside and rode away on his motorcycle. There is no report explaining why no officers stopped him from doing so, despite the fact that he was clearly intoxicated.

A local resident, Montakarn Buathong, 44, said workers behind her home discovered the man inside the tank and initially feared he had died because he was motionless.

She said the man later told rescuers he had been drinking heavily before parking his motorcycle near the alley. He then climbed over a fence, opened the tank's lid and got inside to sleep.

Residents said he was fortunate to survive, noting that if he had lost his balance and fallen into the water inside the tank, he could have drowned.

Foreign Man Confronts Thai Woman Over Tattoo

A foreign man confronted a Thai woman at a Bangkok fast-food restaurant over her ankle tattoo resembling a swastika, sparking debate about symbol awareness in Thailand where such imagery isn't legally restricted.

1h ago Khaosod

A video circulating on Thai social media shows a heated argument between a foreign man and a Thai woman at a fast-food restaurant, after the man questioned a tattoo on her ankle that appeared to depict a swastika symbol.

In the clip, the man wearing a red tank top is seen telling restaurant staff that the woman had a swastika tattoo. The woman is heard arguing back, saying she had the tattoo done when she was younger and did not understand its meaning at the time. Both parties exchange heated and profane remarks throughout the video.

The woman also insists she has not harmed anyone.

The incident has sparked online discussion, with some users pointing out that there have been previous cases in Thailand where individuals have displayed swastika or Nazi-related symbols without fully understanding their historical context or significance.

Thailand does not have specific laws prohibiting the display of such symbols.

Illegal Resort Owner Agrees To Demolition At Tabu Lan National Park

The owner of Imphuphill Resort has agreed to demolish the illegal structure within Tabu Lan National Park after the government ordered removal of all encroaching facilities on the protected land.

1h ago Khaosod

On July 2, 2026, Environment Minister Suchart Chomklin announced progress on resolving overlapping land claims between Tabu Lan National Park boundaries and local residents' farmland. The government is pursuing a balanced approach that verifies the original rights of local residents fairly and transparently while strictly enforcing laws against forest encroachers, particularly wealthy entrepreneurs, hotel operators, and resort owners who violated regulations.

The minister revealed that Tabu Lan National Park previously issued a notice ordering Assavanont Nirandr, owner of Imphuphill Resort, to demolish all structures within 15 days starting June 28, 2026, following completion of legal proceedings. On July 1, Assavanont requested permission to conduct the demolition himself, and on July 2 at 10 a.m., he met with park officials and submitted a formal request to begin dismantling all structures of Imphuphill Resort, starting immediately.

The park chief instructed the owner to accelerate demolition and restore the area to its natural state as quickly as possible. Conservation officials have been ordered to closely monitor, inspect, and track the demolition process while submitting regular progress reports to ensure legal compliance and proper execution.

Suchart reiterated that this action demonstrates the government's serious commitment to resolving Tabu Lan National Park's land encroachment issues, following the principle of "protecting those with legitimate rights while holding violators accountable." Local residents' land rights will be verified fairly in all cases, while illegal forest encroachers face strict legal enforcement and must demolish structures and return land to the state once courts issue final judgments, thereby restoring natural resources and ensuring equal enforcement of the law.

GPSC Eyes Power Plan Role Supporting Data Centers, Net Zero Goals

GPSC is positioning itself to support Thailand's ambitious 25-year power plan that projects electricity demand will surge to 77,000 megawatts by 2050, with expanded small modular reactor capacity playing a key role in meeting net zero targe

1h ago Khaosod

Global Power Synergy (GPSC), the PTT Group electricity business, announced its strategy to capitalize on Thailand's new Power Development Plan (PDP) spanning 2026-2050. CEO Sirimeth Leephakorn stated that the company is confident in its ability to manage various power plants across different fuel types and costs while supporting data center expansion.

The new PDP aims to address three critical areas: electricity system security, appropriate price structure, and environmental sustainability. Thailand's electricity demand is projected to surge from current levels of 30,000-33,000 megawatts to approximately 77,000 megawatts by 2050. During the transition period, the country will continue relying on natural gas power plants to maintain grid stability and buffer renewable energy volatility.

A major element of the new PDP is the inclusion of Small Modular Reactor (SMR) power plants. The original plan allocated 600 megawatts of SMR capacity by the end of the period, but the new plan expands this to 2,400 megawatts for baseline power generation. This represents a significant increase in clean energy capacity to support Thailand's Net Zero goals. Leephakorn noted that initial construction costs remain high at approximately $6-8 million per megawatt, though costs are expected to decline in the future.

Thailand's first SMR facility is projected to begin development after 2036, with the state-owned Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) leading initial pilot project development. The technology offers energy security, cost competitiveness, and low-carbon generation with continuous operation, while helping reduce long-term fuel cost volatility.

Lawyer Exposes Local Exam Fraud Ring in Northeast Thailand

A lawyer filed a police complaint exposing a corruption ring that defrauded at least 14 job applicants of 600,000 baht each in exchange for rigging local government recruitment exams across northeastern Thailand.

1h ago Khaosod

At 2:00 PM on July 2, lawyer Pattrapong Supaksorn filed a complaint with Deputy National Police Commissioner Charoen Kiatyaem, accusing a network of agents in a corruption scheme targeting local government officer recruitment exams in the northeastern region. He submitted names of approximately 4-5 agents along with bank transfer slips, LINE messages, and meeting details to police.

Pattrapong stated the evidence links Sisaket and Buriram provinces, specifically the districts of Phu, Pakham, Ban Mai Chaiyaphoj, and Na Phot. The documentation includes clear payment transfers between identified senders and recipients, along with chat messages explicitly discussing money payments. He noted November 15, 2024, as a critical coordination date when all groups collected funds before traveling to Bangkok to prepare for December exams. The network includes 4 local administrative officers and 1 subdistrict administrator.

Pattrapong revealed that one officer who received money in Sisaket died on September 25, 2024, yet group communications continued afterward, suggesting the operation persisted with funds transferred to other individuals. Each applicant reportedly paid approximately 600,000 baht in exchange for assistance in passing bachelor-level academic and administrative position recruitment exams.

Currently, 14 confirmed victims have come forward—all paid in full but received no exam results. Pattrapong plans to visit Buriram to identify additional victims. Regarding political connections, while he cannot definitively link politicians to the fraud, one implicated subdistrict administrator reportedly has close ties to National Assembly President Sophon Saram, including shared dining and campaign activities. Pattrapong called on authorities to clarify victim protection policies to encourage more whistleblowers to come forward with evidence.

Archaeologists Begin Excavating Ancient Human Remains At Don Yai Thong

Archaeologists in Phetchaburi province have begun extracting ancient human skeletal remains from the Don Yai Thong site, with nine skeletons and bronze drums expected to be recovered over approximately one month due to deteriorating ground

1h ago Khaosod

On July 2, 2025, an archaeological team from the Fine Arts Department's Ratchaburi office, led by director Nipa Sangkanakindhorn, launched the extraction of ancient human skeletal remains from the Don Yai Thong archaeological site in Ban Don Phlap village, Samoe Phlum subdistrict, Ban Laad district, Phetchaburi province. The team includes archaeologists from the Prachuap Khiri Khan Fine Arts Department office, Silpakorn University's archaeology program, and former skeletal specialists from the Fine Arts Department.

Before beginning work, site owners Kanang Petchsud and Jen Petchsud performed traditional blessings and requested permission to remove the remains from the excavation pit. Director Nipa explained that this marks the first day of the formal extraction process, with support from retired skeletal expert Prapich Phongmasad and experienced archaeology instructors to guide the team's procedures.

The team planned two extraction methods: the first group covers skeletons numbered 1-4, which are layered on top of each other and will be removed in sections over approximately two weeks. The second group, skeletons 5-8, will be lifted as complete platforms using methods overseen by Fine Arts Department scientists to prevent damage, taking about one week. A ninth skeleton, believed to be a child, will also be lifted as a platform due to its fragile condition and the large metal vessel found within its remains.

Additional artifacts still in the pit, including four bronze drums, will be extracted simultaneously. The excavation must proceed due to ongoing ground moisture, saltwater infiltration, groundwater issues, and seasonal rainfall that compromise the skeletal remains and cause metal artifacts to corrode. The extraction phase is expected to take approximately one month, after which the pit will be formally closed. The department plans to display the recovered artifacts, including gold jewelry, glass beads, and colored stone beads discovered in previous work, before beginning comprehensive conservation and analysis.

Thailand Ranks Top Five Asia Pacific Destination

Thailand ranks among Asia Pacific's top five travel destinations, with regional visitors increasingly seeking authentic local experiences like food and culture, according to a new Visa study of over 47,000 travelers globally.

1h ago TAT Newsroom

Bangkok, 2 July 2026 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) welcomes findings from Visa’s 2026 Global Travel Intentions study, which ranks Thailand among the top five destinations visited by Asia Pacific travellers, reflecting continued regional demand for familiar, accessible, and experience-rich destinations.

The study, conducted among more than 47,000 respondents worldwide, including over 17,000 in Asia Pacific markets, indicates that travellers in the region are becoming more intentional, placing greater emphasis on familiarity, practicality, flexibility, and confidence in planning.

According to the study, 63% of Asia-Pacific respondents travelled within the region, far ahead of other regions globally. Thailand ranked among the top five destinations visited by Asia Pacific travellers, alongside Japan, Australia, South Korea, and Hong Kong.

Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor, said, “Visa’s findings support TAT’s quality-led tourism direction under The New Thailand vision, where Value over Volume guides the development of meaningful experiences, stronger visitor confidence, and wider benefits for local businesses and communities. They also align with ‘Healing is the New Luxury’, which presents Thailand through wellness, culture, nature, gastronomy, local connection, and experiences that support visitor well-being.”

Visa also reported that 37% of Asia Pacific respondents plan trips around unique local experiences, particularly food and culture, above the global average of 29%. This reinforces opportunities for Thailand to promote distinctive Thai experiences across established and emerging destinations, while encouraging visitor spending beyond major gateways.

The study further points to changes in travel planning behaviour. Nearly half of Asia Pacific respondents use AI tools to discover destinations and travel ideas, while many travellers check practical information before departure, including accommodation, insurance, visa requirements, local developments, payment security, and card acceptance.

Digital payments also remain central to travel confidence. Visa reported that 73% of Asia-Pacific travellers bring cards or mobile wallets on their trips, with payment security and card acceptance among their key considerations. This supports Thailand’s recent “Pay Like a Local” Cross-Border QR Payment readiness initiative, through which TAT is promoting QR payment convenience at attractions, shops, restaurants, and tourism establishments nationwide.

While travellers are planning more carefully, they continue to value flexibility at the destination. The study found that 79% booked accommodation in advance, while 51% booked experiences before travelling. Dining and transport decisions were largely made after arrival, reflecting opportunities for destinations and businesses to inspire spending during the trip.

TAT is applying its quality-led strategy through focused market communication, experience presentation, digital convenience, and stronger destination dispersal. These priorities support Thailand’s continued appeal to Asia Pacific travellers seeking trusted destinations, local experiences, flexible journeys, and seamless travel services.

Teacher Nim Returns to Old School With 400,000 Baht Compensation

Teacher Nim, who was wrongly excluded from a 2026 teacher recruitment exam, has been rehired at her hometown school in Kalasin Province with 400,000 baht compensation from Suan Dusit University for the administrative error.

1h ago Khaosod

On July 2, Education Minister Prasert Chantharuvongthong announced a resolution to the case of an error in the 2026 teacher recruitment exam results under the Basic Education Commission. Teacher Cha Nattada Worsahan, known as 'Teacher Nim,' who had passed the exam, filed a request for fair review and examination of the testing process.

Following meetings between the Education Ministry, Basic Education Commission, Suan Dusit University, and Teacher Nim with her family, a resolution was reached. Teacher Nim has accepted an offer to return as a contract teacher of physics at Khao Wong Withayakan School in Khao Wong District, Kalasin Province—her hometown where she previously studied.

The school welcomed her immediately, as it currently lacks physics teachers. "The negotiations concluded positively," said Minister Prasert. "She was happy to return to her home school, and the school was eager to hire her due to the shortage of physics instructors. She will also be able to care for her mother. Additionally, Suan Dusit University has taken responsibility by providing 400,000 baht in compensation as encouragement, acknowledging the error and committing to system improvements."

The Basic Education Commission secretary-general expressed support and encouraged Teacher Nim to become an exemplary educator. Professor Sukhum Chaleytrap of Suan Dusit University confirmed the error was a technical administrative mistake with no fraud involved, and stated the university will review procedures to prevent recurrence.

Teacher Nim thanked all parties involved and expressed her intention to return to teaching and develop students in her hometown, while caring for her mother. She hopes her case will serve as a lesson for improving Thailand's teacher examination system.
