8-Year-Old Boy Hero in the Sky: Calms Intoxicated Passenger, Prevents Emergency Landing

An 8-year-old British boy named Phoenix calmed an intoxicated passenger on a Jet2 flight from Turkey to England by singing, showing her football cards, and chatting with her, preventing an emergency landing.

7 May Khaosod

An 8-year-old British boy has become a small hero earning praise from people worldwide after successfully calming an intoxicated female passenger on a Jet2 flight, preventing the aircraft from having to divert for an emergency landing.

The incident occurred in early May on a Jet2 flight traveling from Turkey to England. The boy, named Phoenix, was returning home with his father. The flight was already delayed by about an hour waiting for some passengers to board. Approximately 30 minutes after takeoff, chaos erupted when a female passenger was found to have brought alcohol aboard and began behaving aggressively, shouting and causing a disturbance.

The boy's father, James, volunteered to speak with the woman, who was seated between him and his 8-year-old son. However, unexpectedly, it was Phoenix himself who managed to defuse the tense situation. The boy began singing to her, showed her his football cards, and gently engaged her in conversation. Whenever she became upset again, Phoenix would gently nudge her and say, "Come on, talk to me."

James later revealed: "The way my son handled the situation was amazing. He genuinely calmed her down. I'm not the hero—my son is."

After that, the female passenger remained calm for the rest of the flight, making it unnecessary for the pilots to divert for an emergency landing.

Jet2 airline rewarded both father and son with gifts and free plane tickets to express their gratitude. Phoenix's story touched many people worldwide, prompting individuals from England, Germany, and the Netherlands to send gifts to his home, including thank-you cards, toys, and even a PlayStation 5 console. His father expressed gratitude to everyone for their warm support.

Ten-Wheeler Truck Swerves to Avoid Pedestrian, Crashes into Tree at Full Force, Catches Fire in Massive Blaze

A 10-wheel truck swerved to avoid a pedestrian on Highway 3481 in Chachoengsao province, crashed into a tree and caught fire, with the driver escaping but the pedestrian disappearing from the scene.

7 May Khaosod

A 10-wheel truck swerved to avoid a pedestrian who suddenly crossed in front, then crashed into a roadside tree with tremendous force, causing an electrical short and massive fire that consumed the vehicle. The driver miraculously escaped, but the pedestrian who crossed the road vanished from the scene.

On May 7, 2025, police sergeant Sutheep Chaidharm, head of Sala Daeng subdistrict patrol, received a report of the 10-wheel truck losing control and colliding with a roadside tree with subsequent fire on Highway 3481 near the canal bridge in Sala Daeng area, Bang Nam Priao district, Chachoengsao province. He rushed to the scene with the local subdistrict fire truck.

Upon arrival, authorities found the truck's cab engulfed in intense flames, wedged against the tree. Firefighters coordinated water spraying operations that took approximately 15 minutes to successfully control the fire. No occupants were injured inside the vehicle because the driver had managed to escape beforehand, though the truck's cab sustained severe damage.

According to witness statements, 54-year-old driver Tanapat (surname withheld) explained that he was driving back from Samut Prakan province to his sister's home in Bang Nam Priao. As he descended from the canal bridge, he spotted a pedestrian crossing the road directly ahead. He swerved the truck to the left to avoid impact, but couldn't control the vehicle, which then plunged off the road and crashed into a tree. The collision caused an electrical short in the fuse box behind the cab, sparking a massive fire. Although Tanapat attempted to extinguish it with an onboard fire extinguisher, the flames spread too rapidly, forcing him to escape and alert police to dispatch firefighting units. The pedestrian who crossed the road could not be found at the scene after the incident subsided.

Tanapat has since contacted his insurance company for damage assessment and provided additional information to Bang Nam Priao police station to determine the exact cause of the accident.

Bangkok Governor Aims to Complete Unfinished Initiatives

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt announced plans to continue his administrative work during his final executive meeting, crediting his team with improvements though acknowledging the city's performance remains incomplete. The governor gave specific directives on flood prevention ahead of the rainy season, homelessness reduction through shelter programs, and maintaining political neutrality in upcoming elections. Chadchart rated his own performance at 5 out of 10 while praising his administration's efforts at 8 out of 10.

7 May Khaosod

BANGKOK — 7 May 2026, Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt announced his intention to continue his work following public recognition of improvements in the capital's administration over his four-year tenure, though he acknowledged the city's performance remains incomplete.

Speaking Wednesday at Bangkok City Hall during the final executive meeting of his administration's term, Chadchart expressed gratitude to officials and staff for their dedication throughout the past four years.

The meeting brought together Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) executives, Permanent Secretary Narong Ruangsri, directors from all 50 district offices, senior officials and related staff.

"This is our administration's final meeting. Thank you for working together. I have been very happy," Chadchart told attendees.

"I believe Bangkok has many capable people who work very well. Over the past four years, I have been impartial, but the public has told us that our work has improved. Many of our achievements have addressed people's needs, but we are still not at 100%, so we must continue."

Chadchart rated his own performance at five out of 10, while giving his team eight out of 10, commending their consistent efforts and cautioning officials to remain vigilant during the transition period.

He noted that the city's homelessness situation had improved through initiatives like the "Im Jai House" shelter program, which still has room to accept more residents, particularly given ongoing economic difficulties.

Chadchart warned officials to enforce existing street vendor regulations during the administrative changeover, cautioning that some traders might attempt to exploit gaps while a new administration takes office.

With the rainy season approaching, Chadchart directed agencies to assess flood prevention measures and carefully monitor construction projects that could worsen flooding, including Orange Line rail construction along Ratchadamnoen Road and projects near Banthat Thong Road.

Flooding had already struck 12 locations across Bangkok, prompting him to stress preventive action, including accelerated drainage and canal dredging during heavy rainfall periods.

The governor also ordered the Drainage and Sewerage Department to accelerate delayed projects, particularly the Thonburi wastewater collection and treatment system, noting that residents have suffered significantly.

Regarding foreign birth registrations, Chadchart instructed district offices to strengthen oversight and review whether registration procedures are sufficiently stringent, especially in districts showing unusually high registration numbers.

Ahead of upcoming elections, Chadchart directed all officials to remain politically neutral.

"We must build public confidence in the elections as much as possible," he said. "Whether it is the Bangkok governor election or council elections, everything must be handled equally. We must maintain neutrality and avoid any favoritism."

Civil Service Commission Votes 6-1 That Bhumi Wetchayachai and Permanent Secretary Unlawfully Transferred Two Directors-General

The Civil Service Commission ruled 6-1 that the Interior Ministry unlawfully transferred two directors-general to inspector-general positions, finding the moves were rushed and lacked legitimate administrative justification despite legal au

7 May Khaosod

On May 7, 2569, at the Civil Service Commission office, Commission Chairman Worawit Sukboon announced the findings of the Ethics and Integrity Commission investigation. According to media reports from July 2568, the Interior Minister proposed transferring two directors-general to inspector-general positions, citing administrative necessity. The two affected officials—Nareecha Kosasivailaichai, Director-General of the Department of Local Administration, and Chaiyavat Junthiraphong, Director-General of the Department of Internal Administration—filed complaints with the Ethics Commission on August 6 and 14, 2568.

The Commission voted 6-1, with members finding that the Permanent Secretary of Interior proposed the transfers just four days after the minister announced his policy directives on July 4, 2568. The Cabinet approved the transfers on July 8—less than a week later—leaving no reasonable timeframe for the two officials to implement the assigned policies before their reassignment. According to Ministry Order 2704/2568, dated September 3, 2568, the officials were appointed as inspector-generals, over one month after receiving the policy mandate.

Particularly problematic is the case of Chaiyavat, who would have less than one month remaining before mandatory retirement, making it impossible to effectively drive policy implementation regarding drug suppression issues. While the Interior Minister and Permanent Secretary possess legal authority to make such transfers, they must exercise that authority lawfully.

Chairman Worawit stated the transfers demonstrate hasty action concealing undisclosed purposes beyond genuine administrative necessity. Although the reassignments maintain equivalent salary and position allowances, the job responsibilities differ significantly between director-general and inspector-general roles. Inspector-general positions lack human resources management, asset management, and budgeting responsibilities—core functions of director-general posts. The reassignments essentially converted their roles to oversight and advisory positions rather than operational leadership positions.

Husband and Wife Thieves Arrested for Stealing Pangolin from Pata Zoo; Found Trading Animals and Squirrel Monkeys for Drugs

A husband-and-wife theft duo arrested in February were found stealing exotic animals from zoos across Bangkok and attempting to trade them for drugs in the Don Muang district. Police recovered multiple stolen animals including a beloved squ

7 May Khaosod

On February 6, 2025, Deputy Police Commissioner Samarani Nualma, along with Deputy Commissioner Krisda Kanchanalong and numerous other senior police officials, ordered the arrest of two suspects: a 26-year-old male named Rai and a 27-year-old female named Wari, both charged with theft and property damage using a vehicle.

The pair had a documented history of three theft incidents:

1. March 20, 2024: Theft from under a residential house in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya 2. April 30, 2024: Theft of a squirrel monkey named "March" from Pae Mon Friend Zoo, the zoo's beloved mascot 3. May 1, 2024: Theft of one saltwater crocodile and one tiger-striped salamander from Pata Zoo

Police seized multiple animals during the search including squirrel monkey "March," one saltwater crocodile, one tiger-striped salamander, five snakes, one raccoon, one tortoise, and other animals still under investigation.

The arrest followed an unusual tip to the Narcotics Suppression Bureau that a husband and wife couple were seen carrying animals into drug distribution areas in the Don Muang district, attempting to trade a pangolin for narcotics. After investigation, authorities identified the suspects as teenagers living in the Don Muang area with a pattern of animal theft across Bangkok and its surrounding areas.

Detailed investigation revealed their latest crimes occurred on April 30, 2024, when they stole "March" from Pae Mon Friend Zoo in Bang Khun, and on May 1, 2024, when they stole the crocodile and salamander from Pata Zoo in Pin Klao. Police tracked them to their residence and discovered numerous stolen animals. Officers also found an apartment in Don Muang where the suspects were hiding animals for sale.

Deputy Police Commander Theeradej Thammasudeer stated: "This criminal activity goes beyond simple animal theft—it involves connections to drug trafficking, a serious threat to society. Officers must expand the investigation to cover both the animal theft network and drug trafficking routes that may be interconnected, in order to prosecute these crimes according to the law."

Yongyuth Phiwphannoi after the victim's parents filed a complaint. The alleged crime occurred on April 28, 2025, at the suspect's residence.

Suchart Praises Sugarcane Farmers and Sugar Mills for Efforts to Reduce PM2.5 Dust; Burnt Cane Intake Falls to 3.80% Below Standard

Thailand's sugar industry has successfully reduced burnt sugarcane intake to 3.80% during the 2568/2569 production season, surpassing government targets to control PM2.5 air pollution. The Natural Resources and Environment Minister praised the nationwide efforts of farmers and 58 sugar mills across 29 provinces, which collectively processed over 105 million tons of sugarcane while achieving the lowest pollution levels despite facing labor shortages and drought conditions.

7 May Khaosod

Suchart Chomklin, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, monitored operations at the Air Pollution Control Center under the Pollution Control Department and commended sugarcane farmers and sugar mills across the country for their concrete cooperation in advancing government policy to reduce PM2.5 dust pollution. Following the closure of the 2568/2569 production season, burnt sugarcane entering mills accounted for only 3.80%, below the set standard, with Ratchasima Sugar Mill (Bang Wean) recording the lowest proportion at 0.25%.

Surin Vorakitdhamma, Director-General of the Pollution Control Department, reported that the policy limited burnt sugarcane intake to no more than 10% to control PM2.5 during the production season (December 2, 2568 – May 3, 2569). A total of 58 mills across 29 provinces processed over 105.86 million tons of sugarcane, comprising 101.84 million tons of fresh cane and 4.02 million tons of burnt cane (3.80%).

Six mills achieved burnt sugarcane intake below 1%. Despite facing challenges this year including labor shortages in sugarcane harvesting and drought, the sector successfully met the burning control targets, reflecting the cooperation of all sectors in reducing environmental and public health impacts.

Health Ministry Monitors Mpox Outbreak Following Songkran Festival, 48 Confirmed Cases Reported Predominantly in Males

Thailand's Ministry of Public Health is closely monitoring an mpox outbreak following the Songkran festival period, with 48 confirmed cases reported as of May 3, 2025, predominantly among males aged 18-39 years. The outbreak has been linked to holiday travel and activities, with sexual contact identified as the primary transmission route. Health officials are urging the public to practice preventive measures including condom use and avoid close contact with symptomatic individuals, while vigilance continues due to the disease's 5-21 day incubation period.

7 May Khaosod

On May 7, 2025, Dr. Montatip Kanjasawasdi, Director-General of the Department of Disease Control under the Ministry of Public Health, announced heightened surveillance for mpox (Mpox), particularly the Clade Ib variant, following the holiday tourism season. The department has observed an increase in cases linked to travel and activities during the festival period. With an incubation period of approximately 5-21 days, additional cases may gradually emerge during this phase, and cluster outbreaks could occur in some areas. Contact tracing may be incomplete in certain cases, necessitating a dual approach of symptom monitoring and personal prevention measures.

According to the latest data as of May 3, 2025, Thailand has confirmed 48 mpox cases in 2025, consisting of 43 cases of Clade II and 5 cases of Clade Ib. The majority of patients are male, aged 18-39 years, with sexual contact being the primary transmission route. The overall situation remains manageable but requires continuous vigilance.

Dr. Montatip emphasized that mpox transmits through close contact with infected individuals, particularly through contact with rashes or pustules, body fluids, or prolonged close proximity. He urged both Thai and foreign tourists to maintain proper health practices, avoid close contact with symptomatic individuals, maintain personal hygiene, and reduce risky behaviors to minimize infection and disease spread.

Symptoms to watch for include fever, fatigue, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, and rashes or pustules on the body. Anyone experiencing these symptoms, especially after recent activities or travel, should seek medical consultation and inform their doctor of relevant travel history.

Dr. Montatip reiterated that while the Clade Ib mpox strain requires continuous monitoring and the overall situation remains under control, risks persist during the disease's incubation period. He stressed the importance of multi-sectoral collaboration in prevention and symptom monitoring to reduce transmission and maintain public health confidence.

The Department of Disease Control is actively conducting public awareness campaigns on mpox prevention through various channels and distributing condoms to prevent sexually transmitted infections. The department has also prepared surveillance, screening, and treatment systems while coordinating with relevant agencies for effective disease control. For inquiries, the public can contact the Disease Control Department hotline at 1422.
