On May 13, 2026, Megan Dixon, a 21-year-old English woman, made the difficult decision to undergo double leg amputation after suffering from chronic pain for over eight years caused by stiffened and severely deformed legs that have rendered her unable to perform daily activities.
Dixon's illness began at age 13 when she contracted whooping cough and glandular fever. Within a year, her legs began to fail and she could no longer walk. She was initially diagnosed with ME (myalgic encephalomyelitis), a chronic fatigue syndrome, but her condition progressively worsened until she could no longer sit, speak, or see properly. After spending over 18 months hospitalized, doctors diagnosed her with FND (Functional Neurological Disorder), a nervous system condition that causes the brain to send and receive signals to the body incorrectly. She became paralyzed from the neck down, requiring tube feeding and experiencing seizures, while her legs twisted into increasingly severe deformities that doctors could not straighten, even under anesthesia.
Throughout the years, Dixon felt dismissed by the medical community and was denied treatment by five different surgeons, often being told her condition was psychological despite experiencing 24-hour pain. By the time she found willing physicians, her knees had suffered irreversible damage, making amputation the only viable option.
Currently unable to walk, Dixon drags herself along the floor or uses a wheelchair to move around, with even basic activities like getting into bed or using the bathroom causing severe pain. She has surgery scheduled for August and is fundraising for an electric wheelchair and medical equipment to help restore her independence.
Dixon's message to others facing health challenges is to trust their bodies and seek help immediately, warning that prolonged medical neglect can lead to irreversible consequences like those she now faces.
