KHON KAEN — On May 15, 2026, authorities in northeastern Thailand began investigating a complaint that tissue paper was found inside a fish dumpling purchased at Bueng Kaen Nakhon market in Khon Kaen municipality.
The investigation was triggered after a 58-year-old woman posted on social media that she had discovered tissue paper inside her fish dumpling. Her post sparked significant online backlash and prompted health officials to take action.
Nutchaniwan Dondilerd, deputy mayor of Khon Kaen municipality, stated that officials had been in contact with market management and identified that the market operates with both permanent vendors and temporary daily sellers. Initial findings revealed that the fish dumpling stall was not a regular vendor and had reportedly set up near the rear entrance of Wat That temple on May 13 before vacating the area.
Municipal health and environmental officials are now working to locate the vendor and have requested the customer submit the dumpling for laboratory testing to verify whether foreign material is present. Authorities indicated that legal action may follow if the investigation confirms food contamination.
To reassure both residents and tourists about food safety standards and protect the province's tourism image, officials planned to conduct inspections at Bueng Kaen Nakhon market on the evening of May 15.
