Prasit Blasts Pipat's "Shallow Thinking" on Banning Trains from City Center, Says it Shifts Burden to Public

Opposition coalition coordinator Prasit criticized Deputy PM Pipat's proposal to ban trains from Bangkok's city center following a collision, calling it "shallow thinking" that burdens commuters instead of addressing root causes like poor t

19 May Khaosod

On May 19, Prasit Wattharasindhul, a party-list MP from the People's Party and coordinator of the opposition coalition, stated that both opposition and government sides plan to submit an urgent motion regarding the train-bus collision on Asoke-Din Daeng Road during parliament's May 20 session. He criticized Deputy PM and Transport Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn's proposal to prohibit trains from entering the city center, calling it "shallow thinking" that unfairly shifts the burden onto train commuters. Prasit proposed three alternative solutions: 1) Strictly enforce traffic laws (noting that currently only 10% of traffic violations caught on camera result in citations), 2) Redesign road usage patterns to accommodate safer traffic flow, and 3) Accelerate the Missing Link railway project to reduce intersection points between trains and vehicles. "If we follow Pipat's approach and just ban trains whenever an incident occurs, that's overly simplistic and places too much burden on the public," Prasit said.

Geological Department Warns 9 Provinces of Heavy Rain, Flash Floods, and Landslide Risk in Hillside Areas

Heavy rainfall across nine provinces including Tak, Phitsanulok, and Nakhon Sawan poses significant risk of landslides and flash floods in hillside areas through May 20, the Geological Department warns.

19 May Khaosod

The Geological Disaster Operations Center under the Department of Mineral Resources issued a warning on May 19, 2026, alerting authorities to monitor landslide and flash flood risks. Heavy continuous rainfall in landslide-prone areas, combined with rainfall forecasts predicting potential landslides, presents significant danger particularly in Tak, Phitsanulok, Nakhon Sawan, Phetchabun, Lopburi, Trat, Loei, Nong Bua Lamphu, and Chaiyaphum provinces.

Metereological forecasts indicate heavy rainfall in northern, northeastern, and central Thailand including Bangkok and surrounding areas over the next 24 hours. The southern western coast and eastern regions face heavy to very heavy rainfall due to a strong southwestern monsoon system affecting the upper Andaman Sea combined with a depression over northern Vietnam.

The public is urged to exercise caution against dangers from heavy rainfall and accumulated water that could trigger sudden flash floods and flash floods, particularly in hillside areas near watercourses and low-lying regions. Community volunteers in at-risk areas are requested to continuously monitor geological disasters and prepare for potential emergencies.

Relevant agencies must closely and continuously track conditions in their areas. If geological disasters occur, officials must promptly inspect affected areas to provide reassurance and initial guidance to residents in vulnerable zones.

Myanmar Teens Held After Assault on Thai Youth in Pattaya

Myanmar teenagers detained in Pattaya after allegedly assaulting a Thai boy and stealing his shoes on Sukhumvit Road, though the suspects claim they were robbed at gunpoint first and acted in self-defense. Police are reviewing CCTV footage

19 May Khaosod

CHONBURI — 19 May 2026, Police detained a group of Myanmar teenagers accused of attacking a 16-year-old Thai boy in a street assault. The suspects, however, gave their account of events, claiming they had earlier been held at gunpoint and robbed of a pair of Converse sneakers by the victim's group. They are now asking police to review CCTV footage.

Following viral social media posts by the victim's sibling, a Facebook user claimed his younger brother was attacked by nearly 10 youths believed to be Myanmar nationals. The group allegedly beat the teenager, stole his shoes, damaged his motorcycle and spat on him. The incident occurred on Sukhumvit Road in front of Wat Chong Lom, inbound to Chonburi, in Moo 2 of Na Kluea subdistrict, Bang Lamung district, Chonburi province.

On Tuesday, Pol. Col. Sarawut Nuchanart, superintendent of Banglamung Police Station, said a joint task force detained the group for questioning on the evening of 18 May. The operation was led by Pol. Lt. Col. Yongyuth Wanneua, deputy investigation chief; Pol. Lt. Col. Wutthiphong Kasa, investigation inspector; and Pol. Lt. Natthathan Chanthawong, inspector at Tourist Police Station 4, Subdivision 2, Tourist Police Division 1, along with officers from local police, tourist police and immigration police.

During questioning, the suspects admitted attacking the Thai teenager. However, one member of the group alleged that the Thai youth had earlier threatened him with what he believed was a firearm and forced him to hand over a pair of Converse shoes. His friends later arrived and intervened, leading to the confrontation captured on security camera footage.

The group also asked police to examine CCTV footage recorded before the incident to support their claims, insisting they too had been victims. Investigators will question both sides in detail and review all available evidence before deciding whether to pursue charges. Because minors are involved in the case, the investigation will be conducted with relevant agencies and a multi-disciplinary team. Authorities said legal action would be taken against anyone found guilty to ensure fairness for all parties.

Meanwhile, the 'Thai Mai Ton' ('Thais Won't Tolerate') group, led by local figures Hia Tee Kratha Ron and Bird Pattaya, said they were satisfied with the arrests. The group thanked authorities for moving quickly to pursue the case and track down the suspects.

Thai man confirms crossing into Cambodia while foraging

Thai villager Yot Sainoi confirmed he accidentally crossed into Cambodia while foraging near the Surin border, settling a social media dispute that claimed Cambodian soldiers had arrested him on Thai soil.

19 May Khaosod

SURIN — Thailand's Second Army Region has confirmed that Yot Sainoi, a Thai villager detained by Cambodian soldiers near the border last month, accidentally crossed into Cambodian territory while searching for forest products.

The Suranaree Task Force under the Second Army Region assigned a military unit to inspect the route and location where Yot was detained south of Chong Ta Liang border crossing in Kap Choeng district, Surin province.

The inquiry was launched after social media posts claimed that Cambodian soldiers had crossed into Thailand and arrested someone on Thai soil, causing public confusion. A field inspection led by Col. Thanin Domhom, commander of Task Force 2, along with Col. Kittisak Bangphimai and Col. Nitikon Sirikham, retraced the route on foot with Yot and his 21-year-old son in front of reporters to verify the facts publicly.

Yot said he had wandered across the border while foraging and was detained by Cambodian authorities on April 15, 2026. He was released and returned to Thailand on May 15, 2026 following coordination between Thailand's Second Army Region and Cambodia's Regional Military Region 4.

Inspection findings showed that Yot had crossed barbed-wire barriers and Thai military positions before entering Cambodian territory, having traveled approximately 5 kilometers from where he parked his motorcycle. Yot initially was uncertain whether he had crossed the border, but after military officials showed him boundary markers, maps, and the route, he acknowledged he had inadvertently entered Cambodia.

Yot expressed gratitude to Thai authorities for securing his safe return and cautioned local residents gathering forest products near the border to be more careful. Military officials announced plans to install additional barbed-wire fencing along the border to prevent similar incidents and enhance public safety in the area.

A 77-year-old traveler embarks on adventures with Basil, his Jack Russell terrier, beginning in Phuket on an unexpectedly clear morning that inspires a journey together.

19 May The Phuket News Life

I had the idea on a morning that had no business being as clear as it actually was. Aged 77, I am unsurprised when a certain fog settles over my mornings – over memory and purpose for example – but that day the light over Phuket was sharp as a blade and Basil, my Jack Russell terrier, was already pacing the bedroom, like an impatient admiral.

Push to Increase Flights at Regional Airports, Creating Opportunities to Boost Secondary City Economies

Thailand's transport ministry is pushing regional airports to increase flights and boost secondary city economies through cost-reduction incentives and new route development across the North, Northeast, and South.

19 May Khaosod

Deputy Transport Minister Pattrapong Pattarapreechit chaired discussions with airline associations to support increased flights to regional airports and boost secondary city economies, while seeking relief measures from Middle East conflict impacts. The meeting included Airports of Thailand Director-General Danai Rueangsan, Thai Civil Aviation Authority Director General Manat Chuwanprayoon, and Thai Airways International Acting Director Surachai Nuprom to promote aviation services at regional airports.

Pattrapong revealed that the discussions represent important public-private sector integration to maximize the capacity of regional airports in the North, Northeast, and South, which currently have growing potential to handle more flights and passengers. The proposed incentives would not only reduce airline operating costs but also create convenient travel options for the public, directly benefiting income distribution and strengthening grassroots economies at the regional level. Airlines are encouraged to consider opening new domestic and international routes, expanding flight frequencies to major and secondary cities through both regular and charter flights.

Airports of Thailand Director-General Danai Rueangsan noted that previous 2025 promotional measures for domestic routes—such as service fee reductions for new routes and airlines—successfully attracted carriers including Thai Lion Air on the Don Mueang-Nakhon Phanom route, Thai Vietjet on Suvarnabhumi-Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Thai AirAsia on Suvarnabhumi to Nakhon Si Thammarat, Buriram, and Narathiwat routes. These measures will be reapplied, and international route promotions are also under consideration.

The meeting also recommended increasing facilities and reducing costs to stimulate more travel from both Thai and foreign tourists, while discussing relief measures from Middle East conflict impacts. Airports of Thailand will initially offer a 50% discount on aircraft parking and landing fees for airlines at its airports for six months, effective June 1 through November 30, 2025.

Judicial Discipline Committee Punishes Three Judges: One Dismissed, One Removed from Promotion List, One Stripped of Seniority Status

The Judicial Discipline Committee dismissed two judges for serious misconduct including fraud and unauthorized legal arrangements, while waiving punishment for a retired officer who improperly advised a litigation party.

19 May Khaosod

On May 19, 2569 (2026), the Judicial Discipline Committee held its 13th meeting at the Justice Courts Building in Bangkok, chaired by Supreme Court President Adisak Tantiwongse. The committee considered and resolved several disciplinary matters:

1. A judicial officer was found to have provided case advice to another party who was involved in the same litigation—conduct deemed damaging to judicial integrity and violating civil service protocol. While classified as minor misconduct warranting a three-year suspension of promotion or salary increase, punishment was waived because the officer had already left the position upon reaching mandatory retirement age under the Judicial Civil Service Act B.E. 2543, Section 75.

2. A judicial officer was accused of failing to perform overtime duties for warrant issuances while fraudulently signing attendance records and accepting overtime compensation—constituting serious disciplinary violations. The committee voted for dismissal. Reports indicate the judge, who held a provincial court chief position in a Southern island province, had allegedly shirked assigned duties for an extended period before this ruling.

3. A former judicial officer was found guilty of serious misconduct for arranging lawyers for defendants and collecting case processing fees from plaintiffs, undermining public confidence in judicial integrity. The committee voted for dismissal. The officer previously served as a department head at a lower court in the Northeast region and had been suspended for several years before today's ruling.
