Students Arrested After School Shooting Injures Three

Two teenage students were arrested after a school shooting in Pathum Thani injured three classmates, with police seizing homemade firearms and filing attempted murder charges.

15h ago Khaosod

Two high school students were arrested following a shooting incident at a school in Nong Sua district, Pathum Thani, that injured three fellow students. Police apprehended a 15-year-old and a 17-year-old with two homemade firearms and 14 shotgun rounds. The incident occurred in the evening and prompted police at Nong Sua Station to file charges of attempted murder and illegal weapons possession.

The school closed for one day on July 3, with District Education Director Dr. Hrithai Boonpradap, school Principal Pol. Col. Watchrawit Nithivarat, and Nong Sua Police Inspector meeting to discuss preventive measures. The principal explained the closure was needed to investigate facts, clarify information, and ease parental concerns about student safety following the school violence.

Of the three injured students, one was transferred to Pathum Thani Hospital with a gunshot wound to the face. A second student at Nong Sua Hospital was shot twice in the back with shallow wounds; doctors removed one bullet and plan an X-ray for the other. The third student was beaten but uninjured. The school will require parents of involved students to sign agreements on behavioral supervision. Counselors will closely monitor affected students' attitudes and recovery. The principal acknowledged that current teenage behavior may be influenced by online media, violence imitation, and access to homemade weapons. About 4-5 classrooms were affected. When the perpetrators return next week, parents will again meet with the school to resolve conflicts and restore peer relationships.

The Thai Committee on Irrigation and Drainage (THAICID) held a press conference on July 3, 2026, at the Royal Irrigation Department headquarters on Samsen Road to announce the THAICID-NWIKS 2026 Network Week, themed "Smarter Water for a Stronger Future: Intelligent Water for Sustainable Progress." The event aims to create a knowledge-sharing platform on water management, technology, innovation, and agriculture to address climate change challenges.

Yongyon Nieamthrap, a civil engineering expert on planning and projects at the Royal Irrigation Department and chair of the THAICID-NWIKS 2026 organizing committee, led the announcement. The press conference was attended by three Deputy Directors-General of the Royal Irrigation Department—Worrapoj Petchonchart, Songpol Suaysom, and Thanandon Sutthiphisai—along with representatives from partner organizations including the Thai Hydrological Association, the Engineering Institute of Thailand, the Council of Engineers, the Thai IoT Association, Kasetsart University, and the Agricultural Research Development Office.

Nieamthrap stated that climate change inevitably impacts water resources, agriculture, and food security. Future water management requires knowledge, digital technology, innovation, and cooperation from all sectors to enhance the country's water and agricultural resource management and prepare for future challenges. The THAICID-NWIKS 2026 event will serve as an important platform connecting knowledge, innovation, and collaborative networks at both national and international levels to advance Thailand's water and agricultural management toward efficiency, resilience, and sustainability.

The THAICID-NWIKS 2026 event will be held July 8-10, 2026, at the 80th Anniversary Building of Kasetsart University's Kamphaeng Saen Campus in Nakhon Pathom Province. The program includes national irrigation and drainage conferences, presentations on water management technologies and innovations by domestic and international experts, knowledge-exchange forums on agricultural water use, and opportunities for youth, emerging researchers, and model farmers to share their work and experiences. Thailand Raises 2025 GDP Growth Forecast To 2.1%

Thailand's central bank research group raised its 2025 GDP growth forecast to 2.1% after a US-Iran ceasefire eased oil price concerns, with tourism recovery and AI investment expected to support expansion despite persistent structural econo

16h ago Khaosod

KKP Research, the financial business group of Kiatnakin Phatra, has raised its 2025 economic growth forecast for Thailand from 1.9% to 2.1% following a ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran on nuclear weapons negotiations lasting at least until August. Despite ongoing uncertainty, immediate concerns about oil prices in the second half of the year have eased. Average oil prices in 2025 are now expected to reach $85 per barrel, down from the previous forecast of $92.50. Meanwhile, global private sector investments in artificial intelligence (AI) are expected to be a key factor supporting the economy in the second half of the year.

KKP Research identifies three main channels through which positive effects will reach Thailand's economy:

1) Tourism Sector Recovery from Temporary Stability De-escalation in the Middle East, a major global aviation hub, benefits travel demand. The forecast for foreign tourist arrivals has been raised from 31.8 million to 32.7 million visitors this year (though still down 0.8% compared to 2024, reflecting fragile recovery). Tourism revenue is expected to increase 1.4% to 1.56 trillion baht, with projections for 2026 raised from 34.1 million to 34.9 million visitors.

2) Lower Oil Prices Ease Cost of Living While lower oil prices reduce household and business burdens, the transmission to private consumption remains limited due to tight household finances. Savings tend to go toward debt repayment rather than creating new demand, especially with stricter lending standards. However, KKP Research expects domestic retail oil prices to not decline as much as global markets due to contributions to the Oil Fund to offset accumulated debt of approximately 57 billion baht. Diesel prices are expected to stabilize at 32-33 baht per liter, with the fund clearing its debt completely by early 2027.

3) AI Demand Supports Exports in Select Industries (K-Shape Growth) AI investment growth benefits Thai exports specifically in technology sectors such as HDDs, computers, and electronic components. However, traditional industries like automotive, petrochemicals, and furniture face ongoing competitiveness challenges, resulting in difficult overall industrial production growth despite improved export figures.

Structural Pressures and Interest Rate Outlook

The current account is expected to remain in deficit in 2025 despite lower oil import costs, due to structural factors such as service sector income still below pre-COVID-19 levels and higher capital goods imports driven by AI investment trends.

Inflation is forecast to decline to 2.4% average in 2025 (down from the previous 3.0% forecast) due to lower energy prices. Under these conditions, the Monetary Policy Committee is expected to maintain the policy rate at 1.00% for at least the next 12 months, with possible increases only if inflation rises above expectations or interest rate differentials with major global central banks widen. Rate cuts are possible in the second half of 2026 if domestic economic growth slows, global bond yields peak, and regional currency pressures ease.

Customs Chief Plans Tighter Checks On Outbound Passengers, Crew

Thailand's customs chief plans stricter checks on outbound passengers and newly deployed drug-detection dogs, though he cautioned that enhanced screening could redirect smugglers toward airline crew members who historically faced limited sc

16h ago Khaosod

Customs Director Panthong Loaykulnanth outlined stricter inspection protocols for outbound passengers and crew members during a government briefing on July 3, 2026, ahead of the second anti-narcotics committee meeting. The department recently acquired two operational K9 dogs from Australia with three more under training to aid in drug detection operations.

When asked about increasing technology deployment following the recent air hostess drug arrest, Panthong acknowledged the need for X-ray screening but noted that Thailand's 85 million annual travelers and premier tourism status require careful risk management to avoid burdening visitors. He stated that K9 units had not previously been deployed to screen outbound passengers.

The director emphasized that Thailand made significant drug seizures last year—including 200 kilograms of heroin and 300 kilograms of methamphetamine—though these received less media attention because they did not involve flight crew. He warned that tightening outbound passenger checks might shift smuggling tactics toward lower-risk groups like crew members.

Regarding enhanced screening of airline crew, Panthong indicated this requires inter-agency discussion, noting that historically crew received limited scrutiny due to low perceived risk and background checks. He acknowledged that previous efforts focused primarily on inbound passengers and agreed that strengthened measures for departing travelers are overdue.

Panthong stated that solutions require coordination among Thai Airways International, the Customs Department, and the Office of the Narcotics Control Board, with discussions already underway. He indicated the Prime Minister would issue directives following the committee meeting.

Father Pursues Case After Vietnamese Monk Assaults 12-Year-Old Nun

A 12-year-old Thai nun ordained at a Loei temple was sexually assaulted by a Vietnamese monk in May 2026; her father is pushing authorities to expedite prosecution after senior monks attempted to settle the case internally.

16h ago Khaosod

On July 3, 2026, a 44-year-old monk from Loei province sought assistance from Ekapon Lueanaprasert, founder of a justice advocacy page, to expedite the case after his 12-year-old daughter, ordained as a nun at the temple, was sexually assaulted by Vietnamese monk Si Tan inside his quarters on the evening of May 29, 2026.

According to the father, the Vietnamese monk had invited a group of nuns and lay followers to share a hotpot meal in his quarters—five people total, including the perpetrator, two nuns (one being the victim), and two lay people. During the meal, the monk consumed alcohol. Afterward, he volunteered to drive the temple's golf cart to take the two nuns back to their quarters, choosing to drop off the victim first.

The victim recounted that the monk forcefully pushed open her door and sexually assaulted her. Shocked and terrified, she ran to another nun, crying and recounting the incident before they informed the father. He immediately took his daughter to Nong Hin Police Station in Loei to file a complaint.

However, the father revealed that after the incident became known, some senior monks attempted to negotiate a settlement within the temple without filing charges. He refused, viewing it as a serious criminal matter gravely affecting his daughter's dignity and mental state. He was determined to pursue justice through legal processes.

The abbot initially consented to prosecution but suggested financial compensation. The father firmly rejected this, wanting maximum judicial accountability. After filing the complaint, he was ordered to leave the temple and vacate his quarters, with officials citing his disclosure of internal temple matters to police.

Currently, the victim has provided testimony before multidisciplinary professionals with medical examination documentation. The Vietnamese monk remains in custody pending trial. However, the father remains deeply concerned about potential delays in the investigation summary that could lead to the suspect's temporary release or bail, creating high flight risk given his foreign status. Meanwhile, his daughter suffers severe anxiety, fear of men, and inability to venture anywhere alone, prompting him to urge authorities to expedite the case.

Driver In Drug Delivery Case Has 20-Year Prison History

A 59-year-old driver with a 20-year drug trafficking conviction from 1997 has admitted to delivering narcotics to a Thai airline hostess arrested in Australia, leading police to investigate a broader smuggling network operating from Bangkok

16h ago Khaosod

On July 3, 2569, Deputy Police Commissioner Samran Nualma led a multi-agency task force including senior narcotics and criminal officers investigating the case of a Thai airline hostess arrested in Australia with drugs. Investigators determined that a package containing narcotics was delivered to Ms. Mina at a Bangkok condominium on June 22, 2569, by a man wearing a long-sleeved jacket and blue hood who arrived by Toyota. Police tracked the vehicle to its owner: a 59-year-old man from Ayutthaya with a lengthy criminal history. He received a 20-year sentence in 1997 after being caught transporting 10,000 methamphetamine pills from Chiang Rai to Bangkok. Under interrogation, he admitted to driving the delivery on June 22 and claimed he was hired by a foreign-looking man. He also confessed to delivering packages to another woman in the Soi Suea Yai area beforehand. The vehicle is now in an Ayutthaya shop undergoing window replacement and has been seized for forensic examination. Financial records confirm that the criminal network paid Mina 3,400 baht total: 1,700 baht as an advance and another 1,700 baht transferred on her flight date. Police are expanding the investigation to identify all network members involved. Officers from narcotics and criminal divisions are coordinating efforts with Prime Minister Anuthina Charnweerakul and Police Commissioner Kittirat Panpetch overseeing the case.

Thai Shippers Push Government to Cut Energy Costs

Thai shippers forecast 8-10% export growth in 2025 despite global uncertainties, but urge the government to cut energy costs and boost local content policies to ensure foreign investment benefits domestic businesses and workers.

16h ago Khaosod

Thanakorn Kaetsuwannakun, chairman of the Thai National Shippers Association, has reaffirmed the organization's forecast for 8-10% export growth in 2025, despite ongoing risks from U.S. tariff uncertainty, geopolitical tensions, and global economic headwinds. Recent data shows strong momentum in Thai exports, with the association confident growth targets remain achievable.

Easing Middle East tensions—following temporary ceasefire negotiations between the U.S. and Iran—have reduced energy supply chain risks. Global crude oil prices have fallen from approximately $75 per barrel to around $68 in June, with commodity prices also adjusting downward from conflict-related peaks. However, ongoing damage to Middle Eastern energy infrastructure and low OECD oil reserves mean energy prices may not fall significantly further, making Thailand's energy security and petroleum management policies critical priorities.

Another major growth driver is the worldwide surge in artificial intelligence and data center investment, boosting both exports and foreign direct investment in Thailand. Yet this growth remains unevenly distributed in a K-shaped economy, where exporters and new industries thrive while SMEs, small businesses, and many workers lag behind.

Thanakorn emphasized that attracting foreign investment is only half the challenge—the real test is ensuring those investments create domestic value, link with Thai businesses, and genuinely raise worker productivity. The association is urging the government to accelerate Thailand Local Content policies and increase Regional Value Content requirements, enabling Thai suppliers to enter foreign investors' supply chains while reducing imports and building long-term economic value.

The group also recommends that the government deploy appropriate trade measures—including anti-dumping, anti-subsidy, and safeguard measures, plus product standards—to ensure fair competition and protect domestic industries from substandard imports.

For the second half, Thanakorn calls for maintaining appropriate interest rates while urgently reducing energy costs, particularly electricity, which remains a heavy burden on manufacturers. He also emphasizes the need to continue improving regulations.

Tropical Storm Maysak to Boost Thailand Rainfall

Tropical Storm Maysak will strengthen southwest monsoon winds and boost rainfall across Thailand between July 4-6, though the storm itself is expected to hit Hainan Island and southern China instead.

16h ago Khaosod

BANGKOK — July 3, 2026: The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) is closely monitoring Tropical Storm Maysak, which is expected to bring heavier rainfall to many parts of Thailand despite not making direct landfall in the country.

Through the National Disaster Warning Centre, the DDPM said the storm is forecast to pass over Hainan Island before making landfall in southern China between July 4-6.

Although Maysak will not move directly into Thailand, the agency warned that it will strengthen the southwest monsoon, resulting in increased rainfall nationwide, with isolated heavy to very heavy rain in some areas.

As of Friday, the storm's centre was located over the northern South China Sea, with maximum sustained winds around 74 kilometres per hour, moving north-northwest.

According to forecast tracks, Maysak will cross Hainan Island before moving ashore in southern China between July 4-6. While Thailand lies outside the storm's direct path, its circulation is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon, increasing rainfall across much of the country.

Authorities urged residents, particularly those in areas prone to flash floods, forest runoff, and landslides, to closely monitor official weather forecasts and disaster warnings and follow instructions from local officials.

The DDPM also encouraged the public to stay updated through official weather bulletins. Emergency assistance is available 24/7 via the department's 1784 hotline.
