Monkey Steals Tourist's Phone, Leaves Behind Selfies

A British teenager's phone was stolen by a monkey at Bali's Uluwatu Temple, but he recovered it to find the primate had recorded videos and taken selfies.

14h ago Khaosod

A British tourist's Bali trip took an unexpected turn when a local monkey snatched his phone and left behind videos and selfies.

In mid-June, 19-year-old Lloyd from England traveled to Bali, Indonesia with his girlfriend, but encountered an unforgettable experience when a local monkey stole his mobile phone right before his eyes.

The couple visited Uluwatu Temple, one of Bali's most famous attractions. Lloyd was taking photos of monkeys to send to friends when he lowered his phone. His girlfriend immediately shouted a warning, but before he could react, a monkey quickly grabbed the device and ran away.

After the monkey fled into the nearby forest, Lloyd and his girlfriend sought help from local staff and used location-tracking apps to find the phone. After more than an hour, officials successfully recovered it.

However, the story didn't end there. When Lloyd checked his phone, he discovered the monkey had recorded one video clip and taken multiple selfies, leaving him both amused and astounded.

Lloyd recalled that before the incident, his girlfriend had jokingly said, "Maybe the monkey will use your phone to take selfies." He never imagined her playful remark would actually come true.

Seventeen delivery room nurses at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio are expecting babies simultaneously this year, breaking the department's previous record of 11 concurrent pregnancies. The announcement has generated significant excitement on social media.

Department manager Amberly Sanner explained that staff gradually learned about colleagues' pregnancies over recent months, with numbers increasing steadily until it became a joyful occasion for the entire team.

Of the 17 nurses, 15 participated in a group photo wearing hospital uniforms. Some are expecting their first child, while others are pregnant with their second or subsequent children.

Among them are close friends "Maddie" and "Rileigh," who have worked together in the same department for five years and are both expecting their second child. Rileigh revealed she asked Maddie to assist with her delivery, noting there's no one she trusts more than her daily coworkers.

Although many nurses will take maternity leave over the coming months, the hospital assures that patient care will not be affected. The department employs nearly 200 nurses and support staff, including part-time employees who can provide additional coverage to maintain standard care levels.

Many nurses shared that they regularly exchange pregnancy advice and experiences with one another, and they look forward to their children growing up and playing together in the future.

Thai Central Bank Eyes Four Economic Risks for Second Half

The Bank of Thailand identified four risks threatening the economy in the second half of 2025: high living costs, geopolitical tensions, U.S. trade policy shifts, and El Niño impacts, though the economy remains stable overall despite slowin

15h ago Khaosod

The Bank of Thailand is monitoring four key risk factors that could pressure the Thai economy in the second half of the year: high cost of living, geopolitical uncertainty and U.S. trade policy shifts, and potential impacts from El Niño conditions. Deputy Governor Chayavadee Chaianan revealed Thailand's May 2025 economic outlook, noting the economy remains stable overall despite slowing exports, supported by strong tourism, private consumption, and private investment. Inflation remains elevated but steady, and the labor market continues to show stability.

Tourism revenue and foreign visitor numbers increased, particularly from long-haul markets including Chinese and Malaysian tourists during their respective long holidays. However, tourists from some Southeast Asian countries declined due to weak travel demand and fewer flights caused by rising energy costs.

Exports excluding gold fell from the previous month, especially electronics, jewelry, and automobiles, after rapid growth earlier. This reflects weakening foreign demand, though chemical and some petrochemical exports expanded due to higher commodity prices.

Domestic demand improved slightly, with private consumption rising 0.6% from the previous month as spending on consumer goods and vehicles—particularly cars and electric vehicles—expanded despite high oil prices. Consumer confidence declined, however, due to concerns about living costs, income, and future employment trends.

Private investment increased 1.2% from the previous month, driven by transportation and vehicle investments and machinery imports, though commercial construction slowed. Government spending expanded year-on-year from increased central government current and capital expenditures, especially from ongoing stimulus program disbursements, while state enterprise investment declined due to slower infrastructure and utilities spending.

Manufacturing contracted slightly in line with export slowdown, particularly automotive and electronics production, while services remained stable with tourism supporting retail, hotel, and restaurant businesses. Agriculture saw farmer income rise 5% year-on-year from higher prices for palm oil, rubber, and rice.

General inflation stood at 2.79%, steady from the previous month, as energy prices began falling with global crude oil prices. Core inflation edged up slightly from production cost increases passed to some goods, but no broad-based price increases were detected. The current account deficit was $6.4 billion in May, an improvement from April due to reduced energy imports and lower trade deficits, while the labor market remained stable despite some impacts from Middle East tensions and higher costs affecting hotels and transport sectors.

Lawyer Tam Keeps Bail, Court Adds Media Restrictions

Lawyer Tam kept bail in a 71-million-baht fraud case, though a Criminal Court added media restrictions barring her from publicly criticizing evidence or interfering with witnesses as proceedings continue.

15h ago Khaosod

Lawyer Tam remains free on bail despite a petition to revoke it. The Criminal Court on June 30, 2025, at Ratchadaphisek Road, Room 710, heard arguments in the case of Panathep Puapongphan, chairman of Yam Fao Aplan Din Foundation, and attorney Ajchara Sangkhao, representing Jatuporn Ubonsert (Je Oy), who sought to revoke bail for Sithira Biabangkerd (Lawyer Tam) in a 71-million-baht fraud case.

After analyzing both the petition and the defendant's statements, the court found no sufficient grounds to change the temporary release order. However, it deemed it appropriate to impose additional conditions on the temporary release pending appeal. The court banned the defendant from interfering with witnesses or evidence, or from publicly criticizing evidence in any manner that reduces its credibility or impacts the court's proceedings, as the case remains ongoing.

Regarding the plaintiffs' request to investigate whether the defendant committed contempt of court or violated judicial authority, the court determined that contempt of court under Criminal Code Section 198 requires standard criminal procedures including complaint, investigation, prosecution, and trial—not court-initiated inquiry. For contempt violations, it is the court's exclusive authority. The court noted that maintaining order in judicial proceedings is essential for justice to be administered fairly, efficiently, and without external interference or threats.

The court observed that recent violations involving obstruction, intimidation, and non-compliance with court orders have become increasingly serious. However, since the defendant pledged in today's hearing to take no action risking judicial contempt, and the court has already imposed additional bail conditions, the court decided to give the defendant an opportunity without further investigation, thereby granting the petition in part. The court strictly warned the defendant to comply with all bail conditions or face revocation of temporary release.

Thailand Prioritizes High-Skill Workforce Development in 2570 Budget

Thailand's 2570 budget allocates 3.788 trillion baht with emphasis on developing high-skill workers through university-led innovation hubs and technology transfer programs that connect students, entrepreneurs, and investors to drive economi

15h ago Khaosod

On June 30, 2569, Parliament reviewed the fiscal year 2570 budget bill worth 3.788 trillion baht. Deputy Prime Minister Yossaknan Wongsuwan, who also heads the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHSRI), explained the ministry's budgeting framework, emphasizing the need to work collaboratively over the government's four-year term with both short and long-term perspectives to address immediate concerns while building foundational structures.

Regarding economic development, the ministry uses research and investment mechanisms to facilitate technology transfer. The focus is on developing sufficient human capital with high-level skills through reskilling and upskilling programs. Universities are being transformed into incubation centers and opportunity platforms that connect students, entrepreneurs, and investors to support new ventures that commercial banks might not fund, thereby driving practical research applications.

The private sector will benefit by supporting scientific advancement without excessive risk, as universities establish joint ventures to ensure Thai research has real-world applications. These efforts include science diplomacy partnerships with the Foreign Ministry and both domestic and international incubation.

The ministry addresses a dual economic strategy: sustaining traditional economic engines while transitioning to new ones such as high-value agriculture and high-value industries. Universities will increase their knowledge commercialization revenue through patents in collaboration with the Commerce Ministry, accelerating Thai patent approvals and supporting international patent mechanisms to increase patent value.

Yossaknan highlighted social innovation and security concerns, noting that research funding units are now coordinated with the Defense Ministry through a unified funding mechanism (RUP) to comprehensively address national needs. Anti-corruption measures include open data initiatives and consolidated research databases.

The budget framework focuses on four areas: innovation ecosystems for economic and social development, university improvement, higher education funding, and science research and innovation funding. These are divided into two funds. Yossaknan thanked lawmakers for emphasizing research funding's importance, noting that as global knowledge and thinking rapidly evolve, Thailand cannot rely solely on downstream application but must invest in foundational research.

Luang Pu Shim Amulet Collection Unveiled

A rare amulet collection from revered Buddhist abbot Luang Pu Shim, who died in 1995, has surfaced; his most prized "Phra Gring Promo First Edition" amulets are now highly counterfeited due to scarcity and collector demand.

15h ago Khaosod

Luang Pu Shim Promo, formally Phra Kru Sri Chalung Sangwan and abbot of Wat Chuk Ka Choe in Si Racha, Chachoengsao, was one of the most renowned Buddhist teachers of the post-1950s era, having trained under Luang Pu Tim of Wat Laharn Rai in Rayong Province. Born July 7, 1905, in Si Racha, he was ordained at age 20 at Wat Laem Chabang under Phra Kru Sunthorn Dharma Ros, with Phra Ajarn Jam and Phra Ajarn Lam Duan as co-witnesses. He received the monastic name Promo and developed a lifelong passion for Buddhist scholarship, traveling widely to study with renowned teachers. Later in life, he devoted himself to vipassana meditation practice to transcend the cycle of rebirth, until his death on July 19, 1995, at age 90 with 70 years of monastic life. His royal cremation took place on July 7, 1996, mourned deeply by Chachoengsao residents.

He created and consecrated blessed amulets across multiple editions, some of considerable value. His most highly sought amulet is the "Phra Gring Promo First Edition, B.E. 2527." It was crafted using sacred materials including bell metal from Luang Pu Tim's original Phra Gring Chinbanchar from Wat Laharn Rai in Rayong, combined with 108 yantra sheets and 14 naga elements, following ancient bell-making traditions. Luang Pu Shim additionally consecrated hundreds of yantra sheets featuring designs such as the waving fan yantra, prosperity yantra, wealth yantra, golden goose yantra, and zodiac yantras.

The amulet underwent three separate consecration ceremonies: first at Wat Chuk Ka Choe in Chachoengsao in 2527 by Luang Pu Shim; second by Luang Por Sakhorn Manun, first edition of Wat Nong Krap in Rayong in 2529; and third at Wat Laharn Rai in Rayong in 2533. Today, these amulets are highly sought after and have become so rare that counterfeits are common. Collectors should examine examples carefully before acquiring them.
