Pollution Control Department Stands Ready for Corruption Investigation, Calls Survey Results Perception-Based Data

The Pollution Control Department welcomes corruption investigations but says a survey ranking it highest for bribe offers reflects only private sector perceptions, not proven facts, and questions the study's methodology and small sample siz

1d ago Khaosod

The Pollution Control Department (PCD) affirms its readiness to open itself fully to corruption investigations, stating that the survey results from the Private Sector Joint Committee (PSJC) represent perception-based information and should not be used to rank government agencies or reflect the country's overall corruption picture.

On May 25, 2025, at the Pollution Control Department, Surin Vorakitdhammrong, Director-General of the PCD, announced the department's assessment of research documents from the PSJC's survey of opinions claiming the PCD received the highest average bribe offers at 102,160 baht per instance. Upon learning of the survey results, the PCD immediately convened nationwide administrator meetings and sent an open letter to the PSJC on May 15, 2025, requesting clarification of data sources, verification methods, and submission of relevant evidence within 7 days. This would allow the PCD to verify whether officials were actually involved in corruption.

The PSJC submitted an explanatory letter outlining survey principles and methodology to the PCD on May 22, along with supporting documents including a survey procedure summary, sample questionnaires, and materials accompanying the public announcement.

Director-General Surin stated that the PCD does not reject corruption investigations; rather, it welcomes thorough examination. Corruption undermines the economy, investment, and public confidence. If officials are found to have violated regulations, the PCD will take decisive disciplinary action without exception. The department has established a working group to review measures and administrative practices at every stage to prevent corruption, particularly in law enforcement and inspection procedures dealing with pollution sources—areas where there is risk of abuse of authority and position.

The PCD Director-General emphasized a key point: the survey results constitute "perception-based data," meaning information reflecting the feelings, beliefs, or experiences of survey respondents during a specific period—not facts verified through formal legal proceedings. Such data should be used to reflect private sector perspectives or confidence trends rather than to conclude that corruption actually occurred at the institutional level.

Reviewing the PSJC's documents, Director-General Surin identified several methodological concerns. The survey classified government agencies into 5 groups and sampled only 26 agencies out of 162 ministry-level agencies nationwide, which the PCD views as insufficiently representative of Thailand's overall civil service system and inadequate for establishing national-level policies on academic grounds.

Additionally, the questionnaire design referenced World Bank guidelines from 1999, which may not align with current roles and missions of many agencies. The sample size comprised only 401 respondents nationwide, surveyed over 16 days by individuals with direct experience—approximately 45 percent, averaging roughly 7 people per agency. Some survey questions appeared leading, such as using phrases like "it is commonly known" or posing negative hypotheticals: if additional payments are not made, processes may be delayed. Furthermore, both online and face-to-face questionnaires were used with different question structures.

According to the PSJC's own explanatory letter, confidence levels and sample error margins reference the overall survey and should not be interpreted as guaranteeing accuracy at the individual agency or sub-issue level. Therefore, the conclusion that the PCD received the highest bribe offers may not accord with research standards and ethics. Director-General Surin noted the PCD's previous cooperative efforts.

Trai Samut Visits Baan Phra Arthit to Seek Legal Advice, Affirms Readiness to Fight for Justice

Trai Samut consulted with the Vow to Protect the Land Foundation on May 25, saying she remains committed to pursuing her case despite feeling abandoned by her family and frustrated by the lack of progress in justice.

1d ago Khaosod

On May 25, 2025, Trai Samut traveled to Baan Phra Athit after contacting the Vow to Protect the Land Foundation to seek legal consultation. Upon arrival, she was greeted by supporters who came to show their encouragement before meeting with Pantheap Phuapongphan, chairman of the foundation.

In an interview, Trai expressed her deep sadness following an earlier statement, saying she had received love and support from society that enabled her to reach this point. However, she felt the company's position showed that justice was not a priority. Regarding the personal encouragement she received, she struggled to find words and tried not to speak to avoid breaking down. She explained that all children hope their families will be their support system and source of justice, but she clearly saw from the day of the statement that no one has contacted her and the case remains under prosecution. Her brother still walks freely in society despite being a danger to other children. She affirmed that Trai is ready to continue fighting because her justice depends on our hearts, and she believes everyone feels the same way.

Thailand's Tourism Authority Targets UK Market with Three-City Roadshow to Attract Quality Travelers

Thailand's Tourism Authority brought 19 tourism operators to Glasgow, Manchester, and London in May 2026 to meet with 228 UK travel businesses, capitalizing on over one million British visitors arriving in Thailand annually through expanded

1d ago Khaosod

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) launched the Amazing Thailand Roadshow to UK 2026 across the United Kingdom market between May 19-21, 2026, in Glasgow, Manchester, and London. The initiative brought 19 Thai tourism operators to conduct business negotiations with 228 UK-based travel businesses across the three cities, promoting Thai tourism offerings and reinforcing Thailand's positive image to British travelers. The event was opened by Nattawat Krishnamra, Thai Ambassador to London, at the Waldorf Hilton London.

Tat Governor Thapanee Kiatyirungroj highlighted that the UK remains a crucial tourism market for Thailand, with over one million British visitors arriving in 2025, reflecting strong demand recovery. This success is attributed to TAT's collaborative efforts with airlines on the Airline Focus strategy, which has resulted in expanded flight routes and increased service to Thailand. Currently, five airlines—Thai Airways, EVA Air, British Airways, Norse Atlantic Airways, and TUI UK—operate 35 weekly flights from the three cities with a combined weekly seat capacity exceeding 11,100.

The roadshow attracted overwhelming interest from UK travel businesses, with 228 British operators participating: 47 from Glasgow, 83 from Manchester, and 78 from London, plus 10 top-tier product managers. Thai participants included 19 operators (16 hotels and 3 destination management companies) from Bangkok (5), Krabi (5), Phuket (5), and Surat Thani (4). Beyond business negotiations, a UK Tour Operators' Panel Talk was held in Manchester to discuss travel trends, market competitiveness, and marketing strategies for Thai operators and tourism agencies.

The United Kingdom ranks among Thailand's top 10 source markets for quality international tourism, with Bangkok and Krabi among the most popular Thai destinations for British visitors.

Popular Facebook Page Warns of Fake Edible Gold Leaf from China Being Sold for Baking Use

A popular Facebook page warned that fake copper-based gold leaf from China labeled as decorative craft material is being sold as food-grade edible gold in Thai stores and online apps, with over 10,000 units already purchased, posing potenti

1d ago Khaosod

On May 25, 2025, the Facebook page Drama-addict posted a warning about counterfeit gold leaf from China. According to the post, a follower discovered shops selling baking supplies that were stocking Chinese gold leaf products. When the label was scanned and translated, it revealed the product was labeled as decorative gold leaf made from copper—not food-grade gold leaf—yet it was being sold in the food-grade section of stores and apps, with over 10,000 units already purchased.

The page's admin purchased samples for testing and found the price suspiciously cheap at only 20 baht per tube, which would be impossible for authentic gold leaf (genuine food-grade gold leaf at that quantity would cost thousands of baht). Testing revealed the fake product could be rolled into balls or crumbled when rubbed between fingers, unlike genuine gold leaf which disintegrates almost instantly. When burned, the counterfeit product immediately changed color, proving it was not real gold but rather a metal alloy like copper or iron that reacts with oxygen when heated.

The conclusion is that this product is not suitable for food use and is only meant for crafts. However, it is being sold both in physical stores and online as food-grade gold leaf for edible use. The danger is that consuming these products could expose people to heavy metals and toxins. Most alarming is that the checks on shopping apps suggest over 10,000 units have been sold, raising concerns about how many Thai consumers may have already unknowingly ingested these counterfeit products in food and baked goods.

The page is urging relevant authorities to urgently inspect and take action against this dangerous counterfeit product that poses a health risk to Thai consumers.

Thai Railway Labor Union Presents Petition to PM, Urges Faster Hiring and Review of 1998 Cabinet Resolution

Thai Railway Labor Union submitted a petition urging the government to accelerate hiring and review a 1998 rule limiting new staff to 5 percent of annual retirements, citing severe personnel shortages hampering rail operations.

At 9:30 AM on May 25, 2026, at the government complaint center within the old office of the Civil Service Commission, 30 representatives from the Thai Railway Labor Union (Sarawut Saranyong, union president, leading the group) submitted a letter to the Prime Minister requesting urgent resolution of the State Railway of Thailand's severe personnel shortage. The union demanded that the government accelerate approval of additional staff allocations to SRT and review the Cabinet resolution from July 28, 1998, which restricts new hires to no more than 5 percent of annually retiring employees. The union stated that this resolution has caused continuous personnel shortages at SRT, negatively impacting operational efficiency and public service delivery. At 9:40 AM, the group submitted the letter to government representative Somphap Nilphun, Prime Minister's Office advisor, who received it for forwarding to the Prime Minister and coordination with relevant agencies.

1d ago Khaosod

BURIRAM — On May 24, 2026, a Thai man searching for shellfish in a northeastern Thailand reservoir made an extraordinary discovery: a severed Buddha head lying underwater, which he initially mistook for a sack of discarded durian shells.

Nang Rong district police reported the find at approximately noon on Saturday at Nong Thalok reservoir in Nang Rong subdistrict. Deputy Police Lieutenant Karun Saengarun, an investigator at Nang Rong police station, said rescue workers and a diving team were dispatched after residents alerted authorities.

The reservoir, which spans more than 50 rai (about 20 acres), serves as a raw water source for the local tap water system.

The discoverer, identified as 29-year-old Tawan, told police he was diving for shellfish as usual when his foot struck what he thought was an underwater sack. "At first I thought it was a bag filled with discarded durian shells," he explained. "But when I opened it, I was shocked to find a Buddha head inside."

Fearing he might show disrespect to a sacred object, Tawan immediately contacted police without removing the artifact from the water.

Divers recovered the old fertilizer sack in approximately 10 minutes. Inside, they found a Buddha head measuring roughly 30 centimetres in height and width, weighing about 30 kilograms, with its top section appearing to have been cut off.

Police documented the discovery and transported the artifact to Nang Rong police station for examination. Authorities plan to consult experts from Thailand's Fine Arts Department to determine the statue's age and origin, and to investigate whether it was stolen from a temple.
