South Korea Deploys 160 Police For Team's World Cup Return
South Korea will deploy 160 police officers at Incheon Airport when its national team returns from the 2026 World Cup after a disappointing group-stage elimination, amid threats against head coach Hong Myung-bo.
The Incheon Police Department announced that 160 officers from mobile and airport units will be stationed on duty when South Korea's national football team returns from the 2026 World Cup on June 30. Additionally, Incheon International Airport will deploy 25 more staff members, including special security personnel and company employees, to prepare for potential emergencies. South Korea's disappointing performance saw the team eliminated in the group stage with no official welcome planned. The situation carries risks for team members, particularly head coach Hong Myung-bo, who has been a specific target of threats. Hong faces heavy criticism for the team's poor form and allegations of nepotism in his appointment, while his resignation has also drawn sharp rebuke for lacking dignity. Tensions have escalated to the point of death threats. Police stated: "We decided to deploy officers to prevent incidents during the team's entry into the country. We will firmly counter all illegal acts, including throwing objects."
